Homebase: still no opening date set

DIY giant Homebase, wluch is due to unveil its new store in Clitheroe this autumn, is unable to con firm an opening date. Back in February, boss

by Faiza Afzaal URGENT action is being demanded to

install safety measures on a killer road. ■ Fresh calls have been made by Kibble Val

ley MP Nigel Evans, community leaders and concerned residents for the notorious

• A59 to be made safer after it claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy.

• Daniel Robert Walton, who lived in Hab- fax, was behind the wheel of a white Nissan Vanette, which was involved in a head-on smash with a burgundy Land-Kover Dis covery pulling a trailer carrying a yellow

^Volkswagen Beetle. Police said the teenager, who had only

recently passed his driving test, was deliver ing catering equipment for his father's fami ly business. The accident happened about 3-45 p.m. on Friday, near the Sawley Brow junction on

: the A59 and the road was closed for some four hours. Traffic was diverted around the A59 with congestion on rural lanes. V The driver of the Land-Rover, Jerome Wilkinson (42), and his passenger David Banks (20), both from Barnoldswick, sus tained slight neck injuries and were taken to Airedale General Hospital for a check-up before being discharged several hours later. Emergency services were called including

the North West Air Ambulance, however, Daniel was pronounced dead at the scene. . : The crash has prompted tougher safety measures on the A59. Earlier this week, Mr Evans said: “This is yet another tragedy and reinforces the message that the county council, police and Department of Trans port need to get together and review the safety measures. “The number of accidents that have been

on that road is just phenomenal. “These are not just statistics, it’s human

lives that have been lost and we have to do something about it.” Similar fears were raised by resident Mrs

Dorothy Gleave, whose 17th Century house on the A59 has been h it by speeding motorists on several occasions. She said: “Motorists need to slow down

when travelling up and down the A59. “I t ’s a busy and a notorious stretch of

road, “I have witnessed almost a crash a month

and feel saddened by the constant loss of lives. Something needs to be done fast to prevent more people dying.” She added: “In April last year a young

motorist was lucky to escape serious injury • continued on page 2

es stated the store would open in October and con firmed it would create around 50 new full and part-time jobs. But despite work on the

store appearing almost complete and the October deadline looming, no staff have yet been recruited and Homebase, this week, would not confirm an opening date. A spokesman for

Homebase said: “Home- base is currently in a con sultation period regarding retail space located in the Clitheroe area. As such, there are no recruitment procedures in place and no further comment can be made at this time.” John Macholc, Ribble

Valley Borough Council’s Development and Build ing Control Manager, commented: “Ribble Val ley Borough Council has dealt efficiently with the materials and other con ditions relating to the Homebase store applica tion. “There are outstanding

conditions relating to this application, which are currently being dealt with by ourselves which need the involvement of other partner organisations, including Lancashire County Council. These are being processed and will be determined as soon as possible.” I t is almost two years

since plans for the contro versial Clitheroe DIY store to be built on the former Rectella site, next to Sainsbury’s supermar ket, were finally given the go-ahead. Six months before that,

town centre traders lob bied Ribble Valley Bor ough Council’s planning committee to get resub mitted plans from the DIY giant turned down. However, in May last

year, Homebase won its appeal after Planning Inspector Philip Crookes granted planning permis sion for the store sum marising that the vitality and viability of Clitheroe was “unlikely to be seri ously affected” by the development. By January the former Rectella buildings had

■gone and construction began.
