Horton takes over at the top

ROUND seven 'of the British Rallycross Champi onship at Kent's famous Lydden Hill saw Richard Horton back in action. After another.class win at

Croft in July, Horton's car was checked over ready for one of the biggest meetings of the year, but despite all the preparation the prob lems that dogged him at the start of the season reap peared during the practice season. The lack of time between

the practice session and the first qualifying heat meant that the problem could not be resolved and forced him to compete with a lack of power and finish at the back of the pack. The interval before the

next heat provided an opportunity for the pit crew to work on the car and finally get to the bottom of the problem. With, the car now

returned to it's full power heat two saw Horton lead from the start and finish nine seconds ahead of Can terbury driver Darren Clarke who was the leader at the end of heat one. ■ The next qualifying-heat

went the same way with a Horton and Clarke storm ing away from the other contenders and Horton adding another five seconds to his lead time. The “A” final grid result

ed in the three class con tenders - Championship leader from Dartford, Dave Martin, Horton and Clarke

■ - lining up together. The race got underway with Clarke leading the

■pace, but a mistake by Martin caused a collision between himself and Hor ton and resulted in Martin's car leaving the track and suffering extensive drnnaga This left Horton to chase

after the race leader and after one lap he was right on Clarke’s tail. Going up “Hairy Hill”

Horton saw a gap and made his move right at the top of the hill on the hair-pin tom.' Both cars began the

descent side by side and it was then a matter of keep ing one eye on the track and the other'on Clarke and waiting to see who was going to brake first before the tight right-hander onto the paddock straight. Clarke backed out and

Horton was through to hold on to the lead until the che quered flag.

Horton has now moved

up to become the champi onship leader with Clarke close on his heels. The next meeting is

scheduled for September 14th at Blyton in Lin colnshire. Horton would like-to

thank Daniel Harper and Rob Waddington of Minis port at Padiham for all their help in setting up the car and the loan of their van, and to all the team members of R. and R. Hor ton Motorsport for their help and support.

Football Round-Up Rimington

Borrowdale United . . . . . . . 0 Rimington . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 CHAMPIONS Rimington began the defence of their title in fine style. Without eight players from last

season, the new-look side started brightly, and Wharton soon supplied the opener when he fed Green to head home. .

. Green and McLean then com

bined to release O’Neill, but his cross was fired over by Lloyd. The same player came close again

with a header that looped over, only for Dinsdale to extend the lead just

after the restart with a cross-shot which looped in. And it was 3-0 when Wharton was

upended in the box and Lloyd calmly slotted home the penalty. New signing Conti had a hand in

the final goal when he raced clear and saw his shot beat the keeper, but rebound off the post, before Dinsdale fired in the rebound. . Peel P ark ......................... ,g

Rimington ............. . .4

RIMINGTON romped to their sec ond win of the campaign with an accomplished performance. New signing Shields received the

ball on the right after good work from Walsh and Hutchinson, and crossed for O’Neill to finish on five minutes.

Green and Walsh were pulling the

strings, and Conti and McLean were given several chances to extend the lead, but fine goalkeeping and des perate defending kept them out. An O’Neill run was thwarted by a

two-man foul, but he picked out Lawson with the free kick, and he forced the ball home.

Green thumped home a volley

from 25 yards, only for the effort to be ruled out for a foul.

But his midfield partner Walsh linked with him before unleashing a

20-yard strike which gave the keeper no chance.

Peel Park pushed forward in the second half in an attempt to get back in the game, but Rimington were always on top.

And they completed the win when

Conti lifted the ball over a defender, and McLean thundered in a volley which flew into the top corner. • Rimington will hope to build on' their fine start to the season when

they travel to Mill Hill St Peter’s on Saturday.

Barrowford .............................2 CARTER hit a hat-trick as Riming ton got off to a winning start against newcomers Barrowford. With several new faces in the

starting line up for Rimington, and new manager Dave Buckle at the helm, the locals started brightly. But after 10 minutes, a long ball

was latched on to by a Barrowford striker, who made no'mistake, round-

■ ing keeper Anderson to slot home. The lead was short-lived as Walsh

laid the ball through to Conti, and his.cross was met by Carter. 'Then good work in the centre of

the park from Nelson and Walsh fed Carter, and his 20 yard effort found the bottom corner to make it 2-1. Riihin'gton kept the pressure on,

, arid Sharpies was released by Hall, and his cross to the far post was met by Conti to make the score 3-1 at the break. ■ . Barrowford came out and made all

the running early in the second half, but Anderson stood firm and made - some excellent saves. Carter then scored from the spot

to complete his hat-trick, and Rim ington made sure of victory when Nelson slotted home. Barrowford kept pushing, never

gave up and several chances went begging.

The visitors did eventually man Saturday.

Skipton LMS . . . . . __ ___ .1 Chatburn

.................. ,4

AFTER just missing out on promo tion last season, Chatburn are expecting big things, with manager Paul Craig bringing in proven goalscorer Zak Holgate over the summer.

Skipton. Chatburn started brightly, but

they failed to make the dominance count until late in the first half, when Holgate linked well with Dolan to send Sullivan down the wing, and his first-time low cross found Tom Park er, who converted a simple tap in. A motivational team talk had the desired effect, as Chatburn were

quick out of the blocks after the break.

And the locals delivered against Their second goal was arguably

their best, when Bicknell beat t^^^ men before playing a quick o n e - t^ with Dolan then calmly slotting* home under the keeper. ; ' The third goal came, after great

pressure from Holgate, who forced the centre back into a poor header which Caldwell pounced upon, slam ming a volley home. Minutes later Holgate nearly got

the goal his performance deserved, when Evans squared the ball in the area and his lob, with the outside of his boot, beat the keeper but flew just wide.

However, Chatburn went 4-0 up

wheri Preston burst through on goal and neatly chipped the keeper. As the game came to a close. Chat-

bum keeper Braithwaite was cruelly denied a clean sheet, but Chatburn were convincing winners.

Dog Inn

DOG Inn begin the new Harry Dewhurst Memorial League season when they take on Globe Bullough at 'Wilson's on Sunday.

The Whalley side suffered a heart breaking end to last season, narrowly

missing out on league success and reaching the semi-finals of the Terry Cattermole Trophy for the second successive season. Although they have lost some key

players from last season, a mix of youth and experience has arrived to replace them and manager Simon Kerins is hoping for a good start: He said: “As in life, nothing stays

our best wishes, but my sole concern now is the present squad. “A few new players have come in

and hopefully some more will join them in time for the big kick-off."
