33 off just over 13 overs as the visitors to Church Meadow were put to the - sword. But it was made all the
more astonishing after being forced to retire hurt in the first innings. Howard was hit in the
face by a rising delivery, which forced him to leave the field when on five. However, he returned to
devastating effect to skit tle the Edenfield middle order and tail end with his medium pace bowling. And his exploits saw
their opponents skittled for just 65, as they lost out by 103 runs. Only Adam Barnes (15)
and Christian Slinger (15) made any kind of inroads into the home total, with' opener Greg Smithson (10) the only other batsmen to roach double figures. Smithson and Barnes
both fell to Howard, while Andrew Keir went for a three-ball duck after snick- ' ing one behind to wicket keeper Russell Bradley. Josh Hampson was
trapped Ibw for two, and Howard mopped up the tail end with the wickets of John Lester (2), Brett Storey (1) and Glenn Car- roll (4) to seal a remark able win. Only six boundaries
were conceded by the Wanderers bowlers throughout the 26 overs.

fered a disastrous s ta rt after Stephen Kerr fell with just two runs on the board. Scuderi hit two fours
and a six but fell for 17 to Storey, while visiting pro fessional Babar Naeem added the wicket of Alas- tair Marsh (35) to his ear lier dismissal of Kerr. However, it was William
Slinger who mopped up the rest of the wickets to fall, ending with 3-24 from his eight overs towards the end of the innings. ; Craig Hall (32) and
Gary Hunt (30) made steady inroads into the attack, and eventually helped post a total of 168-6 that proved too steep a mountain for Edenfield to climb. Tbeir cause was helped
further by an unbeaten 23 off just 18 deliveries from Paul Spencer, as he cracked two sixes late in the day. ■ But Edenfield never
looked like posing a chal lenge, as they lost wickets at regular intervals. None of the batsmen
forged a decent partner ship, as Wanderers t r i umphed in fine style. And they will hope for
more of the same on Satur day as they travel to Whalley, before travelling to Read on Sunday for . their Ramsbottom Cup semi-final clash (wickets pitched 1-30 p.m.).

Clitheroe collapse
A LATE batting collapse' saw Clitheroe succumb to the David Morrell show. The Settle opening
bowler swept through the tail-end to give his side a 29-run win at Marshfield. Morrell ended with fig
ures of 5-48, taking five of the final six wickets. And in taking the final
four, for the addition of just 14 runs, he helped hand his side victory when it seemed Clitheroe had fought their way into a winning position.
Chasing a winning tar
get of 162* professional Paul Turner gave them the ideal start, hitting 28 off just 24 balls including six boundaries. ■ That came after Nick!.
James had been run out by Lawrence Read .with just five runs on the board, but Turner steadied things with Jack Dewhurst before the former was caught by
Jeff Ellis off Bret Silvey. Things were stili going
well when Dewhurst fell for 12, trapped leg before by Ellis, while Neil Bolton continued to keep the scoreboard ticking along with some lusty blows, including one maximum. But when he was the
fifth wicket down with the score on 94, to become Morrell’s first victim of the afternoon, things start ed to unravel for Clitheroe. Matthew Coulter did
'
hit a quickfire 18 only to be trapped in front by Ellis
-T.the first of five wickets to fall for 14 runs. Andrew Pearce (5), Carl '
Palmer (1), Mark Harg reaves (6) and Tim Le Bre ton (4) were all victim of Morrellj as he ripped through the late order to leave Clitheroe beaten. Earlier, Le Breton and
Farook Hussain picked up three wickets apiece as Set- ■
tie were bowled out for 161 with seven overs left unused. An early breakthrough
■ saw professional Silvey fall to the second ball of the day for a duck, while Paul Taylor made just eight before he was caught by Le Breton off Andrew Pearce with the score on 11. Ellis hit just two bound
aries in his 39-ball 13, but it was the fourth wicket partnership of 62 between Matthew Wildman (42) and Mark Verden (31) that ultimately won it for thehosts. Shaun Airey (36) and
David Worthington (19) also added valuable runs at the close, as they posted a total that proved too stiff a challenge for Clitheroe to compete with. And Bolton’s men will
be hoping for better on Saturday when they host leaders (Jreat Harwood.

Poor run continues
WHALLEY continued their poor run of form on their visit to Cherry Tree on Saturday. . The locals were rolled
over for just 104, with nine of the wickets to fall being caught, due a mixture of poor shot selection and fine catching by the home ■ side. ■ Youngster Waqas Hus
sain took the first two wickets, as both openers, Martin Davies and Richard Palmer, went cheaply.. And they were soon
joined by the professional, Rajagopal Sathish, for just four, that left Whalley at 12-3 and in the mire. . .Neil .Cordingley was ■
joined by Lee Kearsley, and they took things to 39 before Kearsley fell. ?
And it was soon 49-8,
but Cordingley was joined by Stephen Booth and they repaired some of the damage to give their side a glimmer of hope.
Booth batted sensibly
and made a valuable 24, before Booth fell to profes sional Saleem Mughal.
And.Cordingley had
batted in determined fash ion when he was last man out for a gritty 42, as the innings closed after just 33 overs. After the break Cherry
Tree lost Scott Friend on three for a duck and . Mughal for 10, to leave them at 34-2. But when Ahmer Mirza
joined Mark Hadfield, they dug in and got the advantage back before the very-promising Mirza.

• One bright spot for . : ; ^
Whalley was the introduc-- tion to first team bowling for youngster Greg Jones, who was not fazed by his first ball going for four. ■ He claimed the wickets
of Joe Bolton (6) and Mark Friend (0), to finish with figures of 2-9, before the home side wrapped up . the points. And Whalley will be .

the league, but they gave Read, and their former prof Jon Harvey, a good game tha t the visitors eventually won with less than three overs to spare. Read bowled well in the
early stages and looked set to restrict the home side to a moderate total. Professional Ali Azmat
(12) and Chris Bowker (9) both fell cheaply. But Stephen Pickles and
Matt Haines set about a repair job that gave Earby a fighting chance. Pickles top-scored with
61 before being bowled by Warren Eastham. • And he received solid support from Matt Haines who scored 53 before also falling victim to Eastham, caught by Joey Marshall. i They laid a foundation
for a defendable total, although at 54-2 off 30 overs and 106-2 off.40, the - eventual total of 184-9 looked a long way away. ' Of the remaining bats- ^
men only Jonathan Mar tin (16) reached double fig- : ures before becoming East- ham’s fourth victim. ', . ? • The former skipper went
on to claim 5-56 from 13 overs with Harvey claim ing two from his 16 overs. Read also suffered the
loss of early wickets as Nick Marsh (21) and Michael Whalley (5) soon departed. But professional Harvey
rescued the situation. In partnership with
Kyle O’Connor (21) and then Joey Marshall (40) the professional took Read to the brink of victory. He eventually went for
83 and his innings included seven fours and a six. Marshall’s run-a-ball 40
featured five fours and a six as Read consolidated their position in the top half of the table.

- This year's event was the most wide-open festi val of recent years, with four teams having to par ticipate in a sudden-death bowl out to secure the last semi-final spot: in, the Under 11 section. Both finalists, undefeat
ed all evening,'fancied their chances of taking the cov eted title, but it was the veteran Cobras manager Malcolm Blackburn's Durham outfit who emerged victorious.
. The "Silver Fox" as he is affectionately known, used all his tactical knowledge and years of experience to gain the upper hand over Dave Parkinson and his Warwickshire charges, to clinch his first-ever piece of festival silverware after many years of trying. The Under 7s competi
tion was another close affair, with a bowl out needed to establish the finalists. ■ After much tension and
drama, Chris Donald and Andrew Priory emerged victorious and battled i t , out tor the title. The game went to the
last over, and Donald's Australia held their nerve to beat Priory's West Indies.
Disappointing
CLITHEROE Cobras Under 15s suffered a disap pointing defeat at Great Harwood.; . Batting first, Clitheroe reached 96-6 in their allot ted overs against some tight bowling, with Banks (10), Drake ( 1 4 / and Ahmed (16) the significant contributors.
. A string of run-outs
slowed progress signifi cantly, and it was only a fine innings by Neville (27 not out) and a lively knock by Kennerley (14) which brought the score up to respectability. ? : However, early wickets
looked to have Clitheroe on course for victory, as Great Harwood struggled with four wickets down and only six runs on the board. Bowness (2-:2) claimed the early wickets, but the
