Valley plays host to top jazz musicians
Ribble Valley Jazz
and Blues Club hosts the Nicolas Meier Group with Gilad Atzmon.
THE latest concert organ ised by the Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues Club marked a big step forward for the club when it played host to a band which is one of the major new influ ences on the British jazz
scene. Performing a t the St
Michael and St John’s Social Centre, Clitheroe, the Nicolas Meier Group, featuring Gilad Atzmon, gave us a varied and hugely rewarding evening of music. This band demonstrated
that the “big tent” that jazz today represents is getting ever bigger. Gone is the time when all the innovations in the music came from the USA; now, with the term world-jazz being used, the influences are international. Swiss guitarist Nicholas

AT the recent Clitheroe Festival the beat of African drums resounded around Clitheroe Cas tle and York Street. Joining local drumming group
Slap Happy a t th e event was West African a r t is t Mbackeh Darboe. Mbackeh is in the Ribble Valley ■visiting his manager, Jenny Milne. The pair met in Australia where they worked together for 12 years. Mbackeh performed at various festivals and provided workshops for all ages before returning to The Gambia in 2007 and forming a “super band” of, musicians - “Back To The Roots” and is about to release a new CD. • On Saturday, July 5th, Mback
Britain represented by Tom Mason (bass). Most of the material they
played came from their new CD, “Silence Talks”, showing Nicolas Meier’s growing inter est in Turkish music in his composing. He even played the Turkish:
Sass in addition to some great acoustic guitar. Gilad Atzmon was in com manding form, adding to the
Charlie Parker influence of his earlier playing, th a t of Jewish Klezmer and other middle eastern influences. With the addition of wonder ful drumming from Asaf Sirkis and bass playing from Tom Mason, this was music of a very high order. . . : The supporting group, the Jmz Commandos, in spite of such high-powered company, gave a good account of them
selves, with fine soloing on alto and soprano sax from Phil Meadows and good sup p o r t from the re s t of the band. The club’s next gig will be
at the Swan and Royal Hotel, Castle Street, Clitheroe, on Friday, July 25th, and will feature Julie Edwards and Ke-vin Dearden.
DAVID HERMON sRow us you're hot stuff on the dance floor!
GIRLS and boys from the Ribble Valley have been challenged to show they are “hot stuff ” on the dance floor. Padiham-based cheerleading team
“F ire s ta r te r s” are looking for new recruits - including bright sparks aged
five upwards. Firestarters would welcome young
people of all abilities who would like to be in at the s ta r t of a relatively new team. The team coach is 17-year-old Ste vie Lynagh, a highly trained dance star who has appeared on TV. Team manag er is her mum, Hayley Lynagh. Hayley explained: “We pride ourselves
on giving a warm welcome to young peo ple of all abilities. We do have a competi tion squad and we are ambitious to do
well as a team. However, the main aim is for all our dancers to have fun, keep fit, make new friends and learn new dance moves. “This has meant that we have already
recruited both experienced cheerleaders and people who are trying it for the first
time.” - ' Stevie added: “Firestarters has not
been going long, so it is great to be part of something new and exciting. We are a real team too, and all look after each other.” Sessions are a t Padiham Methodist
Church (opposite Padiham Paints). Children aged eight to 16 meet from 5 to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and from 1-30 to 2-30pni on Sunday. Firestarters
