STORYTELLERS will be per forming around Chipping at a book festival next month. The event on Saturday, July
12th is being organised by pupils and staff of St Mary’s Primary School. As the village is in the Bow-
land Fells, the festival has been given the title “Amongst The Fells”. A full programme of storytellers has been planned. They will perform around the village at venues including the Post Office gardens, the Cob bled Corner Cafe and the
school woodlands. Traditional crafts and music will also be represented at the festival, including sculpting and rush- chair bottoming, all tying in with the traditional story theme. Pupils are pictured preparing for the festival, (s)
Linking the past with the present
MEMBERS of the Clitheroe University of the Third Age in Clitheroe recently listened to Dr Patrick Oats, an art histori- , talking about archaeology,
art and design.: His theme was to link the
past to the present time. By discovering and stud3
ung arte
facts from ethnic and ancient civilisations, he determined from the evidence left behind, how the ancients conducted
their lives. ; During his interesting and varied career, he had come to the conclusion that when con fronted with the same problem, these differing cultures more
• often than not .arrived at the same solution and produced similar results. Dr Oats demonstrated with
slides of his own drawings, the importance of an accurate rep resentation of the human anatomy as seen by the artist. In a further series of slides he showed a number of his beauti fully made ceramic pots in which he had made much use of ancient pottery patterns. Thus he demonstrated that the rela tionship and design of objects from the past to those of today is all part of a continuum. ’ Members were informed that in the present time we are part
of a dynamic process to which we all have a contribution to make. Dr Oats concluded with a
generous question and answer session. The variety and num ber of questions raised from the floor by budding USA artists and potters, and indeed other USA members, confirmed how stimulating a talk members had enjoyed. Dr Eric Lockwood proposed
a wittty vote of thanks. The next meeting will take
place on Tuesday, July 8th at 2- 80 p.m. in Trinity Church Hall when the speaker will be Canon Dr Peter Shepherd.
; MUSIC fans ivill be converging on the area from Friday until Sunday. The Beat-Herder Festival is in its third year and located in fields off the A59 at Sawley Brow.
Music fans set to converge on the area The event features bands such as X-press2,
Misty in Roots, Evil Nine and Utah Saints. Gates open at noon tomorrow and tickets are priced at £55 via the festival website.:

Hitting out at stone thieves
A CO UN CILLO R has s lam m ed th e a c t io n s of th ie v e s who s to le ed g in g stones from a children’s play "area.
' ^ Work is currently being car
ried out at Proctor’s Field Play Area, off George Street, Whal ley, to provide disabled and pram access for users.
However, when Ribble Valley
Borough Council workmen returned to the site pn Monday momingj they found 20 edging stones, worth an estimated £100, had been stolen. Borough councillor Joyce Holgate said: “I ’m furious. The theft has delayed the project by another two weeks. “I ’m not only disappointed
with the actions of the thieves, but I am concerned about the^ safety of the people responsible who have climbed the fence to gain entry into the site. “Parents are being urged to
keep an eye on their children in the evenings and to warn them not to enter the park while essential repair work is being carried out.”
Storytelling around Chipping Curtilage
A PLAN to extend the curtilage at the front of two Read properties has been submitted to the borough council. The proposal involves incorporating the existing foopath and part of the landscaped verge, to a point approximately 2m from the roadway kerb to facilitate construc tion of a new footpath adjacent to and abut ting the highway kerb and aligned to the original footpath at each end of the verge, prior to closure of the original footpath in the garden areas. Comments on this
proposal a t 8 and 5 Buckingham Drive, Read, (number 0858) must be made to Rib ble 'Valley Borough Council by tomorrow. Other applications
submitted include: Barrow: Removal of
the existing conserva tory and the construc tion of a new lounge/day room using masonry construction and a traditional pitched roof, all to match the existing property at 8 Chestnt Crescent (0489). Mellor: Proposed
extension to side and rear of property incor porating pitched roof over garage and new sunroom at 18 Glen dale Drive (0440). Pro posed conservatory extension to rear of property at 16 Fouracre, off Hob Green (0480) Read: Rear eleva
tion, modify roof to include a full dormer with flat roof. Modify existing window open ings to provide patio
’door sets. Front eleva tion, modify existing flat roofed dormer with a pitched roof. Install one additional pitch roofed dormer. Remove existing chim ney stack. Alterations to internal space at 8 St John's Close (0442).
