ferocious shot agmnst the crossbar in the opening minutes, but Wolves were punished for some slack defending as Knuzden’s lone striker was allowed to slot past Dominic Neary. Wolves hit the wood

work twice more before a superb delivery from a Charlie Jackson corner was met by right back Chris Cottam to pull them level. Five minutes later,

another Jackson comer was met by centre back James Parker Clayton to take the lead. And victory was

secured when Ryan Dup- lessis won another comer, taken by Jackson, which captain Jack Parkinson scrambled homa Man-ot- the-match was Matt Riley. Lammack Juniors . . .1 Wolves Under 8 s ........1 CLITHEROE put in a spirited display to secure second placa On a perfect surface,

Clitheroe opted for the advantage of playing with a stiff breeze in the first half, and took the lead through Owen Jack- son. Some rugged defending

prevented Wolves from increasing their advan tage in the first period. The second half saw

JTi:

Lammack go all-out in pursuit of the equaliser, and they were rewarded with a fine headed goal from a throw-in. Credit goes to man-of-

the-match goalkeeper James Billington. Wolves Under 11s Red 0 Wilpshire Wanderers .0 WOLVES surrendered top spot after this draw. Despite having the

wind at their backs in the first half. Wolves failed to take the advantage. Will Milhgan going closest to breaking the deadlock. The second half was

much the same, with nei ther side dominant. In the end a draw was

probably a fair result. Oswaldtwistle............1 Wolves Under 16s . . . .3 ABOTTOM-of-the-table clash was dominated by Oswaldtwistle in the first 20 minutes before Wolves got a grip. James Parker-Clayton

held the home side at bay in defence and a corner taken by man-of-the- match Ryan Duplessis at the end of the half was met by Matt Riley to give Wolves an interval lead. A flying save from

Dom Neary kept the scores level before substi tute Josh Watson added a second. Oswaldtwistle pulled a

goal back before substi tute Kris Holden sealed the game to record a sec ond win in three days.

Blues let an early lead slip

Cliiheroe ....................1 Radcliffe Borough . . .1 CRAIG Sargeson gave Clitheroe the briefest three-minute lead at Shawbridge on Saturday, before bottom-of-the- league Radcliffe Borough equalised through Steve Howson. The constant heavy

rainfall throughout the game quickly reduced the pitch to a quagmire, but the standard of foot ball remained surprising ly high until the final half hour.

V Choriey, away

(UniBond First Division North) Tuesday, 7* 15 p.m.

The Blues fought

through it, kept control and possession, and the chances kept on coming. Clitheroe's 32nd- rainute strike came cour

tesy of a Scott Redhead ball down the wing, which Carl Lomax nod ded inside into space for Sargeson to chest down and place past a rooted Phil Priestley from the edge of the box. However, direct from a

wind-assisted goal kick, Ian Flannery was beaten by the bounce of the ball, and Howson was in and behind to poke home a shot on the stretch past James Mann. Ryan Fisher and Gary Stopforth combined to

Football Round-Up

WADDINGTON’S Paul Ainger suffered a badly-bro ken leg in their 3-1 defeat aganst Oxenhope. With the loc^ trailing 2-

1, Ainger went into a solid tackle with an Oxenhope midfielder, crumpling to the ground and lying motionless with his right leg clearly badly injured. An ambulance was called,

and Ainger was taken to hospital, where he was found to have a broken leg. The game resumed, with

Oxenhope scoring a third goal 15 minutes from time, but the club’s thoughts were elsewhere, and everybody associated \vith Waddington hopes Ainger returns to full he^th and fitness as soon as possible. His skill, drive and energy

will be much missed by his team-mates and manager. Waddington had earlier

gone behind in blizzard con ditions, and, but for keeper Wayne Leech, there could have been more goals. And near the end of the

first half, winger Peter Fletcher received the ball just inside the Oxenhope half and unleashed a 35- yard shot that curled into the top right hand comer to equalise. The second half saw

Waddington look good for another goal, but Oxenhope scored a second against the run of play, before Ainger suffered an awful injury. Waddington then earned

a 1-0 win at a resilient Bradley. The game started with

the locals dictating the tempo. Chances fell to Mark

Harrison, Paul Tierney and Fletcher, finding the Bradley keeper in superb form, while Leech had very little to do at the other end. Player-manager Adrian

Hirst changed tactics by introducing Martin Cane in a forward role for the second half, leading to several chances being created, and Harrison missed the best of them with a point blank header that went just Mda And Mth only 15 minutes

remaining, man-of-the- match Fletcher picked up the ball just outside the box

and let fly with a fierce shot that took a wicked deflec tion and flew in.

Riminglon....................2 Colne Uld......................I RIMINGTON progressed to the last eight of the East Lancashire League Presi dent’s Cup, thanks to a hard-fought victory over Colne United. The home side dominated

the first half, and took the lead when Glen Dinsdale stabbed in a shot from the edge of the box, which found its way through a crowd of players and left the keeper stranded. A couple of dodgy off-side

decisions ruled out two more goals, and, as the pitch start ed to cut up, the standard of play deteriorated. Martin Lawson, deputis

ing for the injured Graham Kershaw, handled every thing Colne threw at him, and the score remained 1-0 at half-time. Rimington threw every

thing at the visitors in the hope that they could put the result beyond doubt as the weather worsened, and sev eral chances were spurned before Danny Paton cut in from the right and squeezed home a left-foot to wrong foot the keeper. But Colne fought back

and pulled a goal back when Lawson somehow let the ball slip from his grasp, and the grateful winger squared it to the centre forward, who made no mistake This set up a nervy last 15

minutes as the pitch became a quagmire, but Rimington’s defence stood firm and saw them through. They were not at their

best, but manager Terry Braithwaite Mil know that as long as his side carries on winning, even when they don’t play well, then the dream of an unprecedented treble is still on. He needs all of his players

to concentrate on doing the job on the day, as any slip up now could wreck their hopes as the games come thick and fast. Trips to Rock Rovers on

Saturday and Worsthorne on Thursday are massive games in the title run in.

Goodshaw U ld ............. 1 Rimington Reserves .. .5 THE visitors started the brighter and should have taken the lead when Brun- skUl hit the post. The rain poured down

and dampen^ the Riming ton attack. Goodshaw started to

come into the game and took the lead when the \vinger swung in a cross-shot and the usually safe hands of Anderson gifted the opposi tion the opener Rimin^on were soon on

level terms when a long ball from Anderson was held up by Carter. He was brought down and Nelson smashed the resulting free kick into the bottom comer. Rimington took the lead

with Hall providing the cross which Brunskill head ed against the bar and to leave Carter the easiest of tap-ins to make Brunskill soon got in on

the act and from a Dearden corner it found the feet of Johns who unselfishly passed to Brunskill to make it three Rimington started the

second half as they ended the first and Brunskill added his second as he was played through one-on-one Not long after Hall added

a fifth with his second of the seasonl A neat one-two with Carter on the edge of the box left him clean through and he made no mistake sliding the ball past the advancing keeper. Hopes of regaining the

title are still there and the next few weeks are crucial and they seem to be getting the consistency they were lacking in the early part of the season!

Gargrave ......................1 Clilheroe Lions............ 4 CLITHEROE Lions con tinued their impressive undefeated run with anoth er away win, this time in tor rential and blustery condi tions at Gargrave. The home team got to

grips with the awful condi tions first, pressuring the Lions back four, with Michael Bank, a contender for player of the season, hav-

ing plenty of defending to do.

Paul Clegg and Hamilton

coped well with any aerial assaults, and eventually the Lions started to get the ball down and play the flowing, attacking football they have been associated with all sea son. As they kept possession of

the ball for long periods, using the width of the Gar grave pitch to their advan tage, chances started to appear. Their first goal came Mth

a superb freekickneartothe corner flag that Michael Walsh curled superbly over the keeper and into the top comer.

Although the home team

continued to push fonvard, attacks were broken up well, and just five minutes after the first goal, the Lions dou bled their lead when the industrious Gaughan had a shot parried by the keeper, which allowed Holgate to slot home. The third goal was sheer

opportunism from strike partner Pinard, as he poked home the ball from outside the area after the defender had mis-controlled the ball after excellent work from Avci. The second half was a

slightly different story as the blustery conditions now favoured the home team, but on a counter attack, Conti should have buried a glorious Pinard cross from five yards out, but blazed wildly over. It looked like the Lions

would regret that miss min utes later when a Gargrave striker was lucky to see his shot deflected in to pull one back. Gargrave sensed that

maybe they could get some thing out of the game, but a succession of shots were superbly saved at full stretch by the the athletic Mashiter, earning him the man-of-the- match award. And some magic from

Pinard made the game safe for the Clitheroe side, as, after a superb move, he whipped in a cross for Hol gate to head home his sec ond. This win puts the Lions

second in their inaugural Premier Division season, two points behind leaders Skipton LMS, having played more games. They next travel to Waddington on Wednesday.

Hurst Green ................1 Canberra......................3 HURST Green were the vic- tims of the shock of the President’s Cup second round, as the First Division champions lost to Second Division Canberra. In a keenly-fought

encounter, the locis started the brighter, and their early pressure resulted in a cross being met by Walker, who saw his header strike the foot of the post. Nikld Wilkinson followed

it up, but hit his shot straight at the keeper. Within five minutes,

Hurst Green were made to pay as, from Canberra's first attack of the game, a right Mng cross was headed out to a Canberra midfielder, who drilled the ball into the bottom comer past the help less Young. Canberra quickly doubled

their lead when a long punt from the keeper was flicked on by the lively centre for ward, and the \vinger clini cally volleyed the ball into the net from the edge of the box. The Green were forced

into two substitutions through injury, as the in form Taylor and Bolton were replied by Malley and Lakeland, but they carved out a couple of chances from set pieces, without testing the robust keeper. Hurst Green came out in

the second half with all guns blazing, knowing their supe rior fitness would result in more possession and chances. Unfortunately Canberra's

tactics were to waste as much time as possible, and their full back was booked, before being lucky not to be sent off after dragging back Seedall to give Hurst Green a lifeline from the spot, which keeper Young stepped up to cooly finish. Now on the front foot,

and Mth the aging back four of Canberra tiring, it was

there for the taking for Hurst Green. However, with some live

ly young players in midfield, Canberra netted against the run of play to go 3-1 ahead. The final 15 minutes saw

the introduction of Barton, and the Green threw every thing at Canberra, which resulted in Tipton, Simpson and Seedall all having good opportunities. Tipton was hacked down

in the box, only for the refer ee to wave play on, which was a surprise to even the Canberra players, but Hurst Green could not make the breakthrough due to some brave defending. Hurst Green’s next game

is at Settle on Saturday, kick-off 2-15 p.m.

Chatburn.....................10 Cononleg.......................1 CHATBURN gave the fans what they wanted as they signed off in their final home game of the season with a display that even the club’s past heroes - Bretherton, Young and McCarick - would have been proud of. Stylish and uncompro

mising, Chatburn left Cononley bewildered, dazed and beleaguered with no answer. It this had been a boxing

match, the ret would have declared it a no contest as Chatburn struck quickly and without mercy with three goals within 10 min utes. The pick of the strikes

was Richard Sullivan’s 30- yard free kick, which could only be admired, but Chat- bum weren't about to let up as more goals followed from Matthew Musgrove and David Fallon, who went on to complete a second half hat-trick, in among goals from Thomas Parker and Mark Sullivan. Chatburn could afford a

few slips, and Thomas Park er could have added a sec ond from the penalty spo^ but missed. Cononley netted a s c ra ^

py consolation goal, but it was the Irishman Matthew Musgrove who stole the show with a man-of-the- match four-goal show, ooz ing class beyond his years.

L O 5 ■I

put Sargeson through on goal a second time, and though the winger round ed the keeper, he could only find the side netting with his shot. In the second half,

Anthony Johnson saw his effort saved by Priestley following a good move between Lomax and Adam Kozlowski, and both substitutes Danny Toronezak and Joel Pilk- ington had further shots blocked. Radcliffe battled thoughout, and although

their best efforts were seen in the first half, hav ing tested Mann as early as the n th minute when Howson was put through on goal, a draw was a fair result given the atrocious conditions. Clitheroe: Mann,

Eozlowski, Redhead, Smith (Pilldngton), EM- er, Hankin (Toronezak), Stopforth, Lomax, John son, Sargeson (Heap).

Gary Stopforth and Ian Flannery congratulate Craig Sargeson.

Matfs podium finish

RACER Matt Griffin earned his first podium place with third in class at the North Humberside rally on Sunday. In his borrowed Nissan

Micra, the 17-year-old for mer Ribblesdale student overcame problems in the second half of the competi tion to finish 77th overall out of 107 teams. Griffin was pleased Mth

his effort in only his second rally, as he was one of 80 cars to finish the six stages. Contrasting weather

made for a rally of two halves, as the same three stages were used twice, in the morning and after noon, going from sunny and dry to wet and treach erous conditions. He said: “Up to the last

stage we had been doing well, but early on the last stage I misjudged my

speed and ended up hitting the banking on the right hand side of the road, and the momentum of the car bounced across the road into the ditch on the left. “We were stuck, but for

tunately this stage had many spectators willing to help us out, and once out we were able to carry on having lost between three and minutes. . “We made it to the end

of the rally thinking we were last, but as we had a lead of more than 4.5 min utes on the team behind us, we finished third in class.” Griffin’s class is the For

mula 1000 Forest Rally Championship. His stand ing is now third in the championship. His next challenge is the

Quinton Rally on Satur day, July 5th.

Horton races to first place at Lydden Hill

CLITHEROE Rallycross drivers Richard Horton and Mark Strange recent ly competed in the second round of the BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship at Lydden Hill in Kent. The two-day event wit

nessed mixed weather con ditions, including snow on both the Sunday and Monday. Richard had a much

more successful weekend after completing a rewire of his car following a disap pointing event at Croft earlier in the month. In the three heats he

produced good results of first, second and first, and set the fastest time of the day during heat one, despite concerns about the track temperatures that had already caught out a number of competitors during the practice ses sions. However, it was a rever

sal of fortunes for Strange, who had produced some spectacular results during his debut at Croft, as he could only achieve second place in heat two, with the other heats producing dis appointing results. Following a collision

ivith another competitor in the final heat, Strange’s car was badly damaged.

but the frantic efforts of the pit crew saved the day and enabled him to make the B final. Unfortunately, his day

didn’t get any better as he was baulked on the start line by a fellow competitor who had stalled, leaving him at the back of the pack. And with Lydden being

a circuit with very few overtaking opportunities, he was unable to make up any ground. The race was won by

Adrian Love, and Strange had to settle for fifth place. In the A final, Horton

sprinted away from pole position, establishing a useful lead ahead of a fran tic battle for second place, eventually consolidating his lead with a masterclass drive to take the chequered flag. He was presented his

trophy by Devon Busi nessman and Rallycross champion Pat Doran. For readers interested in

rallycross, the whole of the Lydden event will be broadcast by Motors TV on the 4th, 5th, 6th, 9th and 10th April. The next round of the

British Rallycross Cham pionship will take place at Pembrey in May.
