years of our lives...

________by the Editor

THE Clitheroe Advertiser and Times is lending its support to a massive campaign to save a mil lion years of life - starting with

action on alcohol. Alcohol abuse contributes to the

cause of one in 10 male deaths in East Lancashire. In the Kibble Valley it is estimat

ed that 21% of people are regularly binge drinking - defined as adults who consume half or more of their weekly recommended maximum alcohol units (10.5 units for men and seven for women) in a single drinking session. From data collected, it is also

estimated that between 2002 and 2004 an average of 10.7 months of life were lost to Kibble Valley men due to alcohol-related issues, and 3.4 months for women. The North-West has one of the

highest levels of alcohol consump tion in the country and correspond ingly the highest rates of alcohol- related deaths. The campaign to “save a million

years of life” could mean that from 2011, future generations in East

Lancashire will live, on average, three years longer. “Excessive drinking across all age

groups and all social classes is one of the biggest issues we face today,” says East Lancashire Primary Care Trust chairman Kathy Keade. “Not only does it lead to life-

threatening illnesses, it also con tributes to devastating social issues including violence, road accidents and teenage pregnancy.” The “Know when to say when”

campaign is part of an overall strat egy driven by the PCT, to help peo ple live longer, healthier lives.

FACT - People in East Lan

cashire are dying far younger than the national average because of their poor health.

FACT - Life expectancy in parts

of the region is up to eight years lower than in other parts of the country.

“Our campaign is intentionally

hard-hitting because we want to bring it home to people that alcohol abuse wrecks lives. “We also want individuals to

recognise that the solution is often in their own hands,” said Mrs Keade. “The focus of the campaign is on

empowering people to ‘know when to say when’ by taking control of their drinking, with support from the PCT. “There is a dedicated helpline

and website to support the cam paign offering additional informa tion and signposting individuals to support organisations.” The Com munity Safety Partnership from Kibble Valley Borough Council has joined forces with the trust in the

bid to tackle alcohol misuse. And there could be a new pub in Clitheroe. “The Watering Hole” is a portable street pub, which will be giving out free bottles of water and information leaflets between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.
