' h i ■ -A i \ DURING - work takes shape AFTER - the artist with Lt Col Harris and the completed work Sapper from Valley by Duncan Smith
AN extraordinary sculpture of a Royal Engineers “Sapper” by a Ribble Valley artist has pride of place at the entrance to a Terri torial Army regiment’s head quarters in Cheshire. The striking 6ft tall commis
sioned piece has been carved, using chainsaw and chisel, from the trunk of a beech tree by sculptor Martyn Bednarezuk (52), from Barrow. Now 75 Engineer Regiment
has taken delivery of the special ly-commissioned statue, which marks both the regiment’s move to a new home and its 40th anniversary, celebrated in 2007. Last year the Territorial Army
regiment became the new resi dents of the barracks in O’Leary Street, Warrington, which had previously been a base for the TA*
infantry. Determined to stamp the
Royal Engineers mark on the town, the regiment recently
installed an engineers’ variant of a huge 41-ton armoured vehicle as an imposing gate guard. Now the statue of a “Sapper” (the name given to private soldiers in the Gorps of Royal Engineers) further reinforces their presence at the barracks. Sculptor Martyn used a
famous Terence Guneo painting of the Second Battle of El Alamein as his inspiration, but adapted it so that his sapper is equipped and dressed in modern style. The progress of his work can be seen in the before, during and after pictures here. Martyn developed his skills in
carving such sculptures by fol lowing in the footsteps of his Ukrainian father, also called Martyn, who came to East Lan cashire after the Second World War. His father made cabinets and other pieces of furniture, including grandfather clocks sold in Harrods. Martyn jun. is now a member of the Master Garvers’ Association and his services are
More plans in the
pipeline for Grand A PLANNING applica tion has been submitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council for the demolition of existing extensions, internal alterations and new extension. Conversion to offices, catering facili ties and caretaker's accom modation for The Grand. Comments on the pro
posal at 14 and 16 York Street, Clitheroe, (number 0055) must be made to the council by April 10th. Other applications sub
mitted include: Clithcroc: Single-storey
extension to rear of prop erty at 52 Mayfield Avenue (0222). Proposed kitchen extension to rear at 81 Taylor Street (0226).
Replacement of existing timber doors on south east elevation with semi- obscure glazed hardwood frame. Minor modification to roof edge along north west elevation to form bound ary gutter against pro posed first floor extension south east facing external wall. Opening in rear wall for extension to fitness gym (Listed Building Gonsent) at Roefield Leisure, Edisford Road (0232). "To extend existing rear single storey outrigger along the building line to the adjacent boundary wall forming an extended outrigger at 43 Ghatburn Road (0231).
in much demand for contempo rary and traditional work. ■ Martyn said: “I bought the
raw material from a sawmill in Gisburn and have taken about 11 months on and off to complete it - although I’ve been doing lots of other things at the same time, including renovating a cottage! I think it looks great in its new set ting. There’s a special finish on it to let moisture out, but not in.” Lieutenant Golonel Sean Har
ris, Gommanding Officer, 75 Engineer Regiment (Volunteers), said: “75 Engineer Regiment moved its headquarters last year from Manchester to Warrington and inherited an infantry bar racks. “I t was very important in
stamping our identity in the area that we looked at commissioning a piece with Martyn, which was very specifically Royal Engi neers. Of all the engineering roles that we carry out, mine clearance is synonymous with the Gorps. “Martyn has managed to pro
duce a beautiful piece and where it currently stands in the RHQ entrance, with the back lighting, not only does it clearly show us as a Royal Engineers regiment within Warrington, it also serves as a great conversation piece and gives something for the soldiers to be proud about.” More information about Mar-
tyn’s work can be found on his website at:

ing.co.uk • Soldiers in the Territorial
Army (TA) serve the British Army on a paid, part-time basis, juggling the demands of every day civilian life and their “day jobs” with a commitment to training as soldiers in their spare time, usually at evenings and weekends. Many TA soldiers have served
recent operational tours of duty in Iraq, Afghanistan or the Balkans, including over 1,300 from the North West in the past six years alone.
