& It follows in the footsteps of the Polo
BlueMotion, a model that has not been hugely successful thus far. The
; Golf learns a few lessons from the Polo, being more visually acceptable while at the same time being a more com mercially attractive proposition. It wears its green credentials a little more subtly and is all the better for it. As you might well expect from a car
that is sold on its environmental sta tus, the Golf BlueMotion is no GTI hot hatch. Powered by a 1.9-litre turbo-diesel engine, it generates 104 b.h.p., which translates into a sprint to 60 m.p.h. from standstill in 11.3 sec onds and on to a top speed of 116 m.p.h. This top speed is, incidentally, a couple of miles per hour quicker than the non-BlueMotion model, thanks to the car’s slipperier aerodynamics. One reservation I have about this car are the lower rolling resistance tyres, which might make a small saving in terms of fuel consumption, but do not hang on quite as well as softer rubber through a set of corners.
The Golf BlueMotion nevertheless
makes a very relaxed motorway car. All models are fitted with a five-sp^ manual gearbox as standard and with longer gear ratios in third, fourth and fifth gears, engine speed levels are lower while driving. These actions alone reduce consumption by about 0.2 litres per 100km and also increase refinement at speed. The turbo-charg er has also been'revised to help improve economy. Unlike the Polo BlueMotion, with
its overt spoilers, wheels and grille treatment, the Golf version is a whole lot more low key. The keen-eyed will spot the Blue
Motion badging on the grille and the rear panel, but otherwise few would spot that this is anything but a stock Golf. The twin fans, the modified grille,
the flow-optimist underbody and the harder compound tyres are not imme diately obdous and the design details, such as the low engine idling speed and the fitment of a diesel particulate fil
ter, are not broadly publicised either. Otherwise, the BlueMotion is much like any other Golf Mk V model. Both three and five-door body styles are available and there is plenty of room to stretch out. The interior finish keeps the Golf near the top of the family hatch tree. It uses a fascia design remi niscent of the Phaeton luxury saloon, although the centre console is lifted from the Touran mini-MPV. Two trim levels are offered with the
BlueMotion variant; entry-level S and better-equipped Match. The S is avmlable in three^oor guise
from £15,565 on the road and for another £500, the five-door car is available. The Match opens at £15,445 for the manual and £16,845 for the DSG-equipped car, this trim level adding 15in. alloy wheels, iPod prepa ration, cruise control, automatic lights and a leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel to a Golf S specification that already includes air conditioning, anti lock brakes, stability control and sue airbags.

of this car significantly, although seemingly not at the expense of character, as this car is designed to put a smile on your face. In making the car over 100
kilos lighter than its predecessor, Mazda has given itself the opportunity to use a relatively small, low power engine. The 1.3 litre engine is available
in two different power outputs, one with 75PS, and another with 86PS. This may not sound a lot, but around town, you’re unlike ly to ever notice any issues. Venture out of town towards
the A roads and it is likely to be found wanting, as acceleration towards the top end just is not

readily available. Overtaking is rarely an option, and going up a hill can be tiresome. This does not necessarily detract from the car’s appeal though. You just need to realise that, like all mod em cars, the Mazda2 has its lim itations. Around town, the 1.3 has
enough power and with its clever electronic power steering assis tance, nipping in and out of small spaces around schools and super markets is a doddle. The suspen sion too is nicely balanced. Mazda has kept things simple,
yet effective inside the cabin. Some of the plastic finishes are not the best, but it is well screwed together, and everything
is laid out in a sensible well thought out way. This theme continues ivith excellent storage inside the cabin. The basic 1.3 Mazda2 will
offer jus t enough go for the majority of its owners. For those wanting a little more, there is a 1.5, and there is even a diesel option, but with engines this fm- gal, the benefits of a diesel in this sector seem minimal, unless you are covering high mileages. There are two levels of trim.
The basic TS includes anti lock breaks, electric front windows and mirrors, twin airbags and a CD stereo.- The car also includes an input for your MP3 player. Step up to the TS2 specification and you get some alloy wheels, more airbags, split rear seats and air conditioning.
