Closing date; Friday 11 April 2003. High-flying Bury too strong for brave locals
ClilheroeRUFC........7 Bury RUFC............... 29 THIS was a courageous showing from the town team, but high-flying Bury were just too strong and were deserved winners. Just as the referee sig
nalled to start proceedings, he seemed to have whistled up the wind and driving rain at the same time. Any thoughts of throw
ing the ball around in Spring sunshine were well and truly swept away, but to both sides’ credit, a good game of rugby ensued. Bury lie second in the
league by way of merit. They have a well-balanced team, including some tricky backs, and a solid front five aided by an
f
pressive back row trio. Clitheroe's loose for-
"Wards, youngsters Simon Cowgill and Mark Curphy, along with veteran Oliver McEntyre, had their work cut out to quell, the marauding drives and sup port play of the visitors.
With elements at their
backs in the first half, Clitheroe competed well, but spent a substantial amount of time defending hard in their own quarter, with just the occasional foray uptield. Eventually Bury's pres
sure told, and they crossed the whitewash just before the interval, but Clitheroe were still in reasonable heart and felt they were still in the game. Bury had other ideas,
though, and began to dominate proceedings, showing just why they are promotion candidates. After shipping another couple of tries, Clitheroe’s woes were compounded with a rash of injuries. Off went diminutive
hooker Adam Penny, to be replaced by the slightly larger frame of Rick Edmonson. Then evergreen Bob
Wilkinson was a straight swap at lock for Steve Dowson. Finally a rejig in backs.
as Declan Fitzhenry was off, then back on after a bump on the head, swiftly followed off by full back James Dickinson, who had hurt his hamstring and limped off to an early hot shower. And with Dave Watson
hobbling around like a wounded buffalo at fly half, the versatile Roger Holmes was press ganged into the scrum halt spot, and bamboozled the oppo sition with his deceptively slow passing. Clitheroe never let their
heads drop, and managed a consolation score of their own. From inside his own
halt, wing man Alex Hough kicked and chased onwards, out-sprinting his man to seemingly win the race for the touchdown, but just as he triumphant ly dived on the ball, it skidded away from him, leaving him lying stranded in the mud. However as Bury tried to run the ball out of
defence, it was turned over and the Clitheroe pack drove it on to the line. They almost lost it as
the slippery ball shot out, but Edmondson pounced on it for the score. Thornton Cleveleys . .58 Clitheroe Cavaliers . . .0 A DEPLETED Cavaliers travelled to fourth place Thornton Cleveleys for what they knew would be a difficult game. The first 20 minutes
were nip and tuck, and the Clitheroe defence held tight. The visitors were deter
mined to eiisure that the Thornton team, who were looking for their 10th con secutive victory, would have to work hard to get over the whitewash. However, the sustained
period of play camped in the Cavaliers’ 22 metre line resulted in the Thorn ton number'lO breaking the defence' to score under the posts. Clitheroe then conceded a few more tries in a mat
ter of minutes to really put the visitors on the back foot. At half-time, captain
Dan Jefferson had no options to change the team around. He had to ask each and
every man to dig deep and try and stop the onslaught which was inevitably com ing in the second half. As requested, the Cava
liers really stuck to their task. They kept the ball in the forwards, and began to put some strong driving mauls together. In among it, as ever, was
veteran Geoff Williamson, who dominated at maul time. At the scrum, the Cava
liers were solid enough and managed to take two against the head. However, as ball
appeared at the base of the scrum, it was snaffled up by either the opposition scrum half or back row. You can’t afford to give
ball away so easily, and the Clitheroe team were pun
ished by the extremely well-drilled Thornton back line.
They put together some
nice moves through their talented fly half, and despite the weather condi tions, threw the ball around like it was a sum mer’s afternoon. The Cavaliers’ one
opportunity to score, through second row Williamson, was defended resolutely by the opposi tion forwards, who tackled him inches short of the line after an excellent passage of pick and drive from the Cavaliers. The score didn’t really
show the effort made by the Cavaliers, but i t ’s results that matter, and the bottom line is Thorn ton were just too sharp on the day. On Saturday, both
teams are at Littlemoor. The first team host Otley (kick-off 1-30 p.m.), then the Cavaliers welcome Skipton (3-30 p.m.) tor a double roses battle.

Clitheroe’s great display
A GREAT performance from Clitheroe saw them come away from Tag with a 10-6 win in the Blackburn and Dis trict Badminton League First Division. There were six wins
from Louise Burrill and Alison Leaver, and the team are now on for a creditable fourth place finish for the season. Disappointingly, the
club’s first team crashed out of the Mid Lan cashire Cunningham Cup at the semi-final stage. Having fought well to
overcome the 50 point handicap, the team of Stephen Pym and Louise Burrill, Paul Cronshaw and Christine Smitton, and Martin Meadows and Mary Brass lost by a mere two points to Multipart B. In the Wrennall Cup,
Clitheroe B continue to fly the flag and look for ward to a finals play-off after a great win over team 2000 B. Steve Pym and Sheila
