Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, August 30th, 2007 7 a weekly look at local issues, people and places
to pursue single issue global causes, such as progress in health, education and the treatment of Aids/HIV instead of develop ing an integrated approach with a much greater emphasis on clean water and sani tation, the cornerstone on which all other development issues should be founded. This situation means there is a genuine
risk tha t the millennium development goals of halving the number of people liv ing in poverty by 2015 will not be achieved. The poor frequently put affordable
access to safe water and sanitation at the top of their priorities but, ironically, the

As I see it . . . by Chris Wilcock
needs and demands of the poor, those directly affected by both deprivation and whatever improvements are brought about by multilateral aid, are not in any mean ingful way considered by the international donors. A good example of donors’ pursuit of
single issue “headline” causes is the inter national measles programme where 550 million children have been vaccinated since 2000, whereas little action has been taken to reduce the unacceptable daily death toll

FIRE crews managed to avert a poten tially destructive blaze at Longstripes Farm, belonging to Coun. J. Pinder. Members of the Clitheroe Fire Brigade quickly progressed over the fells to New ton where smouldering hay, th a t had been set ablaze, was fortunately extin guished before the farm itself set alight. No damage was caused to the bam that contained approximately 30 tonnes of hay during the first fire of the harvest in the surrounding local area. • Two women found themselves under
attack as stones were thrown, deliberate ly in their direction, by a gang of violent youths. The potentially deadly missiles were
launched towards them from the field opposite in Low Moor - forcing the vic tims to seek refuge in the nearby Parker residence.

Lack of access to clean water and sani
tation is undermining human development and investment in this area is failing to keep pace with the overall rise of global aid and, if anything, it is contracting. The millennium development goals are
sure to fail unless international donors recognise that human development cannot be parcelled into separate chunks, instead, donors and developing country govern ments need to see the linkages between essential services and to shape their devel opment policies accordingly. TWO of the Ribble Valley’s best-known hostelries were to be sold by auction at the end of the month. They were the Moorcock Inn,
Waddington Fell and The Ribblesdale Arms Hotel, Gisburn. The Moorcock, which was bought in 1980 by former engi neering company boss Mr Joe Holland, was to be auctioned with a reserve price of £125,000. The following day, the Ribblesdale
Arms was expected to go under the ham mer for an undisclosed asking price. • Police were hunting two men who
robbed a taxi driver at knifepoint in Jubilee Terrace, Langho. The pair hired the taxi in Great Harwood and after being driven to Langho, one produced a knife and demanded the driver’s overnight tak ings. They grabbed £15 from him and ran off.
Small touches - big effects
business and anything that makes it easier is always wel come. When we drove up from Nottingham the car developed a serious fault and we thought that it might conk out at any moment. Finally we arrived only minutes before the removal van. As we pulled up we were
amazed at how fantastic the garden and the house looked. Some people had worked really hard for people they hardly .know. As we unpacked, folks came and went, but left behind
them cards, flowers, potted plants, chocolates, cakes, meals and well wishes. I t was these small touches that have had a big effect on our lives and we say a heartfelt “thank you” to all. We know th a t we are amongst friends, that we are loved and welcomed. Jesus spoke about the king
dom of God in small terms; the mustard seed, a lost coin, the yeast in the flour and a lost sheep. So often in life, in fami lies, community and the church it is the small touch and ges-
tures that make a huge differ ence; a smile, a shoulder to cry on, a helping hand, a listening ear, a phone call, the list is end less. Let me encourage you to
continue to do the small things th a t have a big effect and in doing so be open to receive as well as to give. I look forward to meeting
you here or there. God bless,
TIM THORPE,
