cegdgertiSer.ce.Ml Missed chances costly for Blues By Adrian Capstick
CLITHEROE’S Neil Reynolds has called on his players to find their cutting edge. Reynolds saw a number of
chances squandered in the 1- 1 draw at Garforth Town on Monday - his side’s first point - and has urged the Blues to be more clinical in front of goal in the FA Cup against St Helens on Satur day. The Blues boss admits he would much rather see his team go in search of their first league win of the season than break off to play in the cup.
He felt Clitheroe deserved
all three points at Garforth, and he won’t be happy until he gets a league win under his belt. He said: “The game
'U
should have been over as a contest at half-time. We had golden opportunities to fin ish and we didn’t take them. “We’ve put things right in
training, but we’ve got to take our chances as there is only so long in a game the
back five can defend for. “The results haven’t been
good, but I’ve taken pleas ure from the performances, and hopefully we can take that into the St Helens game.” He added: “People will say
Saturday is a nice break from the league, and the FA Cup is a good competition to play in, but I’d rather have anoth er league game as we need a win in the league.” The Blues came away
from Garforth Town bat tered and bruised with a deserved first point to the season. The Leeds-based club
may play in an identical kit to that of Brazil but there were no silky samba skills on show as the Blues came up against a physical side Dirty Leeds would be a
more apt template for the new boys to the league than the legendary shirts of Romario, Pele and Ronaldo that adorn the club’s bar. Niggling kicks and punch
es were dished out off the ball throughout, blatant to all watching but the referee and his tunnel-visioned linesmen,
Devastating show
CLITHEROE Hockey club were in devastating form at the Brookfields Open at Leyland Motors to secure another title. After clinching the sum
mer league title two weeks ago, the locals were the team to beat and they had both their first and second teams entered into the 10- team tournament. After narrow defeat to
Garstang, Chorley, Witton and Garstang seconds by a single goal, Clitheroe sec onds failed to qualify for the latter stages of the competi tion. The first team, however,
started with a tricky game against Leyland, and after good pressure early on, new signing Alison O’Donnell put Clitheroe 1-0 up with a great deflected goal. Horsfall then added a
second to seal a 2-0 victory. A 5-0 win over Springfields
•!Ci
followed to keep the side top of their pool, before a Had- field hat-trick and a brace by Horsfall gave them another 5-0 win over Brookfields, and a 4-0 win over Garstang thirds booked them a place in the semi-finals. Garstang seconds were
their opponents in the semis, and Rachel Box opened the scoring inside the first minute to give Clitheroe the perfect start. The town team played
outstanding hockey for the full 20 minutes of the semi final, and Garstang seconds appeared shell shocked and unable to stop Clitheroe in a 10-0 whitewash. Further goals came from
Box-Morton (3), Hadfield (1), O’Donnell (1), Laverty (1), Dennison (1) and Hors fall (2). Garstang’s first team
awaited Clitheroe in the final, and just like the locals, they had sailed through their pool with ease - and they were out for revenge for losing both the winter and summer leagues to their Ribble Valley rivals An excellent team pass
ing move found Horsfall for the opener, who weaved her way past the Garstang defence to flick the ball on the reverse stick past the Garstang keeper. Clitheroe capitalised on
Garstang’s shaky start, and Petty made it 2-0. The locals could have netted another, such was their
as Clitheroe dominated. Paul Stansfield finally
found the back of the net two minutes from the break after a raft of chances had screamed out for a goal. A low flighty free kick
from Joel Byrom was drilled across the back of the Garforth box for three Clitheroe players to narrow ly miss getting a touch only for the central midfielder to slot home at the back post. It had looked as though
Clitheroe would struggle for chances when Will Exton injured his shoulder and Reynolds was forced to make an early substitution. But by bringing on Gary
Jackson the side had plenty of chances to realistically win the game by half-time. Byrom proved what a
creative influence he has on the side as he had two good chances of his own. Jackson latched on to an
Anthony Daniels cross and rifled a shot that should have burst the net rather than been saved by the keeper. And then Craig Sargeson put a ball across the box for
Stansfield to slide in with the keeper only to put the ball against the bar. Clitheroe picked up fur
ther bookings in this fix ture, but the first was mere ly for Russ McKenna com ing back on the pitch before he was told to do so by the referee when Garforth had been warned for far worse. The home side’s second-
half equaliser was disap pointing as Clitheroe gifted another free header at a cor ner, this
time.to Chris Kamara to nod home past Peter Collinge. But as late as injury time
the Blues could have nicked the game when Sargeson got the ball across the face of goal to tee up substitute David Dempsey only to see him fire his shot into the hoardings. Exton is a big doubt for
Saturday, as is Russ Clarke (hip), while Ryan Fisher (ankle) looks as though he will be out for two to three weeks. Chris Ward (ham string) and Nigel Taylor (knee) further reduce the squad, but Paul Osbourne and Pete Smith return.
Clitheroe ..................... 7 Wakefield..................... 2 CLITHEROE scored their first goal of the season, but suffered a third successive defeat on Saturday. Ryan Fisher hit the back
of the net for the Blues, who created more chances than in the opening two games put together, but the cen tral midfielder’s equaliser, seven minutes from half time. wasn’t enough. Will Exton brought
impetus to the frontline, as he hustled the Wakefield back four as one of four changes to the starting line up.
His final touch and shot
on goal was found lacking, but he made his presence known and Clitheroe looked better for it. However it was a slow
start for the locals, who gift ed Wakefield their opening goal at another poorly defended set piece after 18 minutes. A Gareth Stoker corner
found Gary Shaw free and unmarked in the middle of the six-yard box, and he thumped his header past Peter Collinge.
But before Fisher found
the back of the net, Exton had two good chances, shrugging off a defender to go one-on-one with the keeper, only to not get a shot away, and then, when put through, his strike hit the post. Fisher sent the sides in
level when he headed home a corner, well-worked by Gary Stopforth and Joel Byrom. The final glancing touch
looked to have come off Exton following Fisher's effort from the edge of the area, but Fisher claimed it. Further chances were cre
ated after the break. Byrom got the ball in along the bye-line for Fisher to sniff out a chance, only to be beaten by the keeper, and Exton continued to muscle the backline. At the other end, Gra
out for off-side after speedy winger Delroy Ferguson had whipped a ball in. The Wakefield player
proved a handful through out the game as his pace got the better of the Blues’ defence on more than one occasion before the visitors netted what proved to be the winner. Ferguson whipped in a
right-wing cross for Howarth to head home at the back post over Collinge. Russ Clarke got back to get his head to the ball, but he couldn't keep it out. Clitheroe substitute
Craig Sargeson made an immediate impact on the game when, with his first touch, he latched on to a Fisher through ball to force a sharp save out of Wake field's Andy Woods. And then he skimmed
ham Marchant was almost given an opportunity on goal when a close contact header by Kieran Fletcher was spilled by Collinge, but the Wakefield striker put the ball wide of the mark. And fellow forward Chris Howarth had a strike ruled
the outside of a post with a 30-yard free kick, and found the head of captain Gregg Anderson with another. Inconsistent refereeing
and a bad ankle knock to Fisher, with all three substi tutes used, saw the Blues fail to make ground in the final few minutes.

CLITHEROE RUFC host North Ribblesdale on Sat urday at Littlemoor to kick off the new season.
