They were seeking treasure in Sabden

THE village of Sabden was invaded by 55 strangers -all taking part in the Clitheroe Speakers’ Club annual treasure hunt. Members from the local club

were joined by guests from clubs in Bolton, Garstang, Blackburn and Burnley. ' All searched through the vil lage for the answers to the clues which had been set.

The eventual winners were a

group from Bolton calling them selves the “Bolton Wanderers”, with two guests from the Clitheroe club finishing second. After a leisurely stroll round

the streets, participants rested their legs with a drink and meal at the White Hart provided by Cheryl McCullough. A raffle was also held. • Clitheroe Speakers Club is

holding a meeting to enable local people to find out more about the organisation. I t will take place at Clitheroe Library on September 10th from 7-30 p.m. For more information, call 01200 428488 or 427870. Pictured are members of the

winning treasure hunt team Valerie Cook, Diane Hawkins, Kate Maher and Barbara Thompson, (s)

Valley is complying with smoking ban

by Faiza Af zaal

NO “c ru sad e rs” are so far challenging the smoke free policy in th e Ribble Valley,

according to officials. Ribble Valley’s Environmental

Health Manager Mr James Rus sell reported that it had been “so far, so good” locally after the introduction of the legislation banning smoking in public places. Mr Russell told members of

the Community Committee that a lot of queries and questions had been dealt with. Earlier, senior environmental

health officer Mr Eamonn Roberts had said the department was dealing with many smoking shelter plans. He said: “We have probably

had 20 applications for smoking shelters in all sorts of shapes and sizes. To comply with legislation, they have to be 50% open. I would encourage people to con tact the council before they put an application forward to make sure i t will comply with the rules.” 0 Some 97% per cent of prem

ises inspected in the North West in the two weeks after July 1st were smoke free, as required by the new law. The statistic was

Fence erecting trio’s bid to win a national title

THREE members of Slaidbum Young Farm ers’ Club travelled to Warwickshire to compete against the best fence erectors in England and

Wales. Keith Wells, Richard Wells and Cecil Walk

er had already beaten teams at the Lancashire and Northern Counties qualifiers to claim their place in the national final. Competitors were required to erect 10

metres of post and stock netting fencing and hang a 10-foot gate using only hand tools. Keith Wells, a fencing contractor from Clitheroe, explained: “It was a real challenge to dig in the strainer posts by hand, to cut and join the netting and to produce a competition standard fence within the time-frame”. Out of 10 finalists, Slaidburn took third prize, beaten only by Somerset and South

Wales. Pictured, from the left, are: Cecil Walker,

revealed by the Department of Health to mark the first month of the ban on smoking in public enclosed spaces in England. Dawn Primarolo, Minister of

State for Public Health, said: “When we introduced the smoke free law, we predicted th a t it would be largely self-enforcing, based on experience elsewhere, and the fact that three-quarters of the public supported the move. “All the signs are that business

es and the public have taken the new law in their stride. These high levels of real protection from second-hand smoke in pub lic places and workplaces are a testament to everyone involved.”
