Volunteers are needed for work at beauty spot
A GROUP of volunteers who help to keep one of Lancashire’s best-loved places in good shape are calling for volunteers. The Friends of Spring
Wood, a registered chari ty, was formed in 2000 and aims to help protect and conserve the ancient semi natural woodland of Spring Wood, near Whal ley.
The group helps Lan
cashire County Council’s Countryside Service man age the wood by carrying out routine maintenance tasks and working on exciting new projects, such as wildflower mead ows, hazel coppices and an easy access trail suitable for wheelchairs. Liz Clunie from the
group said: “We’re all very ordinary people of all dif ferent ages and back grounds, share a sense of humour but are very car ing of our environment and don’t mind getting a bit mucky. “You’ll enjoy the fresh air a few cups of tea or cof
fee and the tranquillity of the woods. “Spring Wood is an
ancient woodland and helping to improve and preserve the area is very rewarding. “The Friends of Spring
Wood meet every first Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. at Spring Wood. “Everyone is welcome
to attend. “Ensure you have a
packed lunch and clothing suitable for the weather conditions and the type of work being carried out. “All we ask is that the
first time you come you contact us in advance so th a t we can make sure someone is there to greet you.” There are three ways
that you can contact the Friends of Spring Wood: Telephone: 01254 825187, e-mail: info@friendsof-
springwood.org or by writing to: The Friends of Spring Wood, Spring Wood Picnic Site, Accrington Road, Whal ley BB7 9TD.

stone at the Whalley site, watched by Russ Pearce,
chief executive, members of the trust board and invited guests from Laing O’Rourke, the main contrac tor, Gilling Dodd architects, and members of the project steering group and user panel. Mr Parr said: “This project is one
of the most exciting developments in the history of Calderstones, which has a reputation for being the best at providing a very specialist service for people with a learning disability and other associated problems. “This new unit will, I am sure,
add to that reputation by providing a flagship facility - purpose built so ensuring a wider range of therapeu tic, education and leisure services
and an improved environment offer ing greater degrees of privacy and dignity. Progress has been excellent and the day-to-day working arrangements on site between our selves and Laing O’Rourke have also been excellent. “It has been a team effort even
from the early days of development - business cases, planning approvals, parish council meetings, through to today where we can see, first-hand, the progress made. I would like to thank all involved.” Our picture shows Mr Parr
unveiling the foundation stone watched by Nick Kendall, project manager (far left), and architect Mark Cowpland. (s)

Crowds flock to village’s 80th agricultural show
THOUSANDS of people headed towards the Ribble Valley over the bank holiday weekend to enjoy the annual Chipping Agricultural Show. Despite the absence of cattle,
sheep and goats this year, crowds of people descended in the village to enjoy the show, which is in its 80th year. Fine weather ensured people
from far and wide attended the event, which promised some thing for everyone. Attractions included a wide range of stalls including horticulture and handicrafts, a dog show, baby show, fell race and classes in heavy horses, light horses and ponies. Show chairman Mr Stanley
Bullock said a good time was had by both the organisers and the public alike. He added: “We had nice
weather, good entries and an excellent turnout. There were about 5,000 people that attend ed. We missed the cattle, sheep and goats, but overall it was a good show.”
