Heat pumps tap into the inex haustible solar energy stored in the earth and ambient air and convert it into energy which can then be used to provide all-year-round heating and hot water with the same convenience and reliability as conventional heating sys tems. In addition, heat pumps can also be enhanced to offer cooling. Heat pumps have been shown to reduce ener gy costs by up to 50%. The only running cost is the electricity needed to drive the heat pump compressor. Further sig nificant savings can be achieved by set tling the heat pump to operate during off-peak periods, making use of cheaper electricity tariffs. Heat pumps also have none of the. safety and maintenance costs associated with conventional heating sysems and because most of the energy is extracted free from the envi ronment running costs are relatively unaffected by the increases in gas and oil costs. As heat pumps extract up to 75% of the heating energy directly from the environment their C02 emissions compared to a gas central heating sys tem are reduced by about half. The elec

tricity required to run the heat pump can also be sourced through renewable means, using 'green'electricity tariffs, and so virtually doing away with any use of fossil fuels and reducing carbon emissions to zero. Heat pumps are a tried and tested technology, used in sev eral parts of Europe and in America. They are very popular in Germany where air source heat pumps have over taken sales of ground source heat pumps. In fact heat pumps are widely regarded as one of the most energy-effi cient and environmentally friendlymethods of providing domestic heating, hot water and comfort cooling. Research has shown that introducing renewable energy-efficient .systems into the home can increase property prices as well as bring about a reduction in bills.
