Cup match ends in drive ban
A WHALLEY driver pulled over by police as he drove home at 4-15 a.m. was nearly three times the legal drink-drive limit. Blackburn magistrates heard
tha t 26-year-old Mark John stone had been to Manchester the previous day, when Black burn Rovers played Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final, and had intended staying at a friend’s house. But after walking from town to Pleckgate, he foolishly got in his car to drive home. Johnstone, of Mitton Road,
pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. He was banned from driving for two years and
fined £400 with £43 costs. The court heard he gave a reading of 90 against the legal limit of 35. He agreed to be referred to the drink-drive rehabilitation pro gramme. Mr Michael Blacklidge
(defending) said his ciient was a young man of impeccable char acter who had been extremely
foolish. “He can’t explain why he
drove,” said Mr Blacklidge. He had left his car at the
Knowles Arms before travelling to Manchester. He had walked back from town and felt he would be all right to drive.

Clitheroe Advertiser STImes, Thursday, April 26th, 2007 17 Special resident’s milestone day ..'•v J.-r t •'Y, ^ r. _________ by Marcia Morris_________
FOR more than three decades Mrs Ellen (Nellie) Wilson, has lived at Pen- dle Court, Hayhurst Street, Clitheroe. On Friday she celebrated her 100th birth
day with a party the following day, attended by the Ribble Vailey Mayor and Mayoress, Coun. Peter Ainsworth and his wife, Thirza, together with her famiiy and friends. The highlight of her birthday was receiv
ing a telegram from Her Majesty The Queen. Mrs Wilson was born at 36 West View,
Clitheroe, on Aprii 20th 1907, the fifth of eight children. Her father Mr John Parkin son was a native of Inskip, who came to Clitheroe to work at his trade of dogger. Before her marriage, her mother, Mary
Moorhouse, lived in the area known as Sal ford, at the corner of Whalley Road and Harrop Street, where her father had a butch er’s shop. Mrs Wilson attended St James’ School
and at the age of 12 started work a t the Jubilee Mill part-time, going full-time a year later. Following a slump at the mill, she was out of work for a while before starting a sewing job at Hitchen’s (which eventually bkame Trutex) in Shawbridge Street. She later returned to Jubilee Mill as a weaver.
In her 20s she met her future husband
Harry Wilson, of Blackburn, who was work ing in Clitheroe at the time, and they were married in-St James’ Church, in May 1930. After a brief spell living with her parents they moved into a cottage at Littlemoor, paying a rent of 6s 6d a week. Their son, Adrian, was born there in 1931. In 1935, having saved for a deposit, they moved into a new semi-detached house, a little further along Littlemoor Road. The couple again moved to a bungalow in
Radeclyffe Street. Mr Wilson had become unwell and was eventually diagnosed with motor neurone disease. They decided to move to a house in Chat-
burn Road, next door to Mrs Wilson’s eldest sister, Hiida, where Mr Wilson died in the spring of 1969. In 1975 Mrs Wilson had the opportunity
of moving into sheltered accommodation, to a new block of flats named Pendle Court, where she is now the longest living resident. Mrs Wilson’s son, who married Anne in
1959, has two chiidren, Ruth and John, and there are four great-grandchiidren, twins Charles and Jack, Benjamin and her name sake Ellen, who was born four days after Mrs Wilson’s 99th birthday. Our picture shows Mrs Wilson joined by
her friends and family at her 100th birthday party held at Pendle Court. (A210407/10)
