CLITHEROE Hockey Club's Championship
decider against Garslang. (S220107/3b)
Clitheroe clinch championship Clitheroe HC. Garstang struck an imme-
Garslang..........................2 diate equaliser when their CLITHEROE Hockey Club took the First Division title and secured promotion on Sunday a t the expense of Garstang. The Ribble Valley side
topped the division for the first 19 weeks of the season, but were knocked down to third place by Lancaster Uni versity and Garstang. They had to beat second- placed Garstang to go up,
'^and they did it in style as preparation against Nelson, Springfields, Kendal and Old ham paid off. Almost 100 people gath
ered to watch, and Clitheroe took the lead when a foul inside the area earned their first penalty corner of the day.
A solid routine from Had-
field and Horsfall produced a quick one-two, with Box Morton firing the ball under the keeper.

quick, skilful right winger picked up the ball in her own halt and beat three Clitheroe players before firing the ball across the face of the goal. The visitors only needed to
draw to go up, and play swung from end to end, with both teams having to with stand good passing moves and possession. The crowd spurred on the
locals, but it was Garstang that looked dangerous going into the break. After the interval,
Garstang made an instant attack and were awarded a penalty corner. Another brilliant save from
Simpson in the Clitheroe goal seemed to settle any nerves, and they started to show why they have not lost a league game on their home pitch for over two years. The deadlock was eventu ally broken when a penalty
corner routine saw Griffiths score her first of the day to give Clitheroe a priceless lead. Garstang
quickly
regrouped, but it w'as the for mation of arguably the strongest midfield in the league, Worthington and Box, who stole possession to link up \vith the strikers and issue a massive blow on Garstang with another quick- fire goal from Horsfall. A passionate Clitheroe
team then threw everything at the ball, and a defender made an infringement on the goal line and gave the umpire no choice but to award a penalty stroke. The Garstang player put
the ball on the spot, and to the relief of the home team, Garstang missed the penalty and Clitheroe’s 3-1 lead stayed intact. A fourth followed for
Clitheroe when Laverty found Hadfield ^vith a killer 50-yard ball, and Hadfield
linked up with Horsfall, Grif fiths and Box Morton, who used all their skiil and devas tating pace to split the Garstang back four and watch Griffiths fire the ball home with a reverse stick strike. With 16 minutes remain
ing, Garstang had to score three times, and a determined attack from the visitors resulted in a series of penalty comers being awarded, and a very unlucky deflection off the hand of one of the Clitheroe defenders sent the ball past Simpson into the comer of the goal. But Griffiths then com
pleted her hat-trick when she pounced on a loose ball ,and Clitheroe left the pitch to an extended round of applause from all their supporters. Player-of-the-match was

THE curtain falls on Clitheroe Foot ball Club’s season at Shawbridge on Saturday, and the team want to give the fans a good send off. The Blues aim to finish the current
campaign with 60 points, and victory over Shepshed Dynamo would do it. Co-manager Neil Reynolds won't
settle for anything less and, having seen the club reap 13 points from a possible 15 in their last five home fix tures, it all points to a positive result.
' ^ Reynolds said: " I t would be absolutely amazing if we could get 60 points. The highest we could finish is 12th, which would be fantastic and just show how far we’ve come, well as set us up for a top-of-the-table push next season. "I’d just like to say a massive thank
you to everyone connected to Clitheroe FC, the fans, the committee, for their support in making the season
■'•ca success. "As well as a special thanks to our

groundsman Keith Lord, as we were the only club in the league not to have
r-
a home game cancelled all season." Team news for Saturday sees play
er-manager Pete Smith return, and Ant Daniels a hopeful following an ankle injury. Will Exton remains sus pended. Clitheroe’s end-of-season presenta

tion evening will be held after the game, s ta r t time 7 p.m. in the club house.
CLITHEROE were left chasing the game at Stocksbridge Park Steels from the outset on Saturday. Two defensive mistakes cost the
side dear in the opening 15 minutes, and despite two goals from Chris Ward, the game was put beyond them by a third strike before half-time, and a killer fourth early in the second half. Gregg Anderson and Kris
Matthews had an off day for Stocks- bridge's opening goals. The former headed back towards
goal a ball th at had nearly beaten him, and Stuart Copnell was in and around to net. And the defensive pair were pushed up when Copnell was in and around
again to chip Blues keeper James Mann for the second. At 2-0 down, a Kris Matthews
header from a Joel Byrom free kick would have pulled a goal back, but for Ward touching the ball over the line from an off-side position. The Shawbridge s triker did
however redeem himself by netting from the spot before the half was
ner through David Cockerill before the break. A fourth goal followed after half
time when Copnell and substitute Ben Walker combined, before Ward latched onto a throughball to slot home his second of the game. Other attempts in the game saw
Ryan Fisher have a shout for a penalty, and right-back Alastair Brown strike a glaring miss over the bar from less than six yards out. • Blackburn Rovers Ladies take on Fulham at Shawbridge on Sunday (kick-off 2 p.m.), and the district school town team are in cup action Friday night (kick-off 7-30 p.m.)

THERE were some amaz ing scores in the Fourball Trophy at Whalley on Sat urday. Played as a betterball
medal, Rob Hilton and Roy Ellis took the trophy \vith a 59 which included a back nine of only 26 strokes. Father and son, Paul and
Andy Wray, were disap pointed that their 60 was only good enough for second place. Rob and Roy will now go forward to represent Whalley in the Internation al Pairs semi-finals in Scot land in October. Clitheroe’s fourball stable-
ford turned up a host of complementary pairs. The combined scores
event saw former firefighter Alan Clarke and the experi enced Geoff Cartledge amass 75 points to win by one. Second place, a point back, went to the in-form Peter Bradley and Dave Foster who finished three clear of the Mike Tattersall- Gary Speak and Michael Prince-Alan Wright pair ings. Seniors section chairman
Ian Lambert led a formida ble team rvith club president Geoff Roberts and recent w'inners Alan Clarke and Ross Lee to a resounding success in the seniors yellow- ball. They scored 85 points to
finish seven clear of Tom Wallwork and his team. Rain showers on Sunday
presented a different chal lenge, but Peter Harrison was not fazed as he pro duced an impressive 39 points to mn the singles sta- bleford. Paul Wood needed a
birdie on the last, but had to settle for a par and runners- up spot.

The Andrews had a head-
to-head for third place. Both shot 73 points with Rob snatching third spot on the card from James who fin ished ahead of Peter Boddie. Clitheroe representatives
Mike Dawson and John Beggs were elated following their Daily Mail foursomes second round success. Outgunned by five-handi
cap and scratch golfers from Shaw Hill in the early stages they found themselves three- down after eight. The tide turned to see the
Clitheroe pair go one-up on the 16th, only to be pegged back to level by the 18th. The Clitheroe pair then
held their nerve to win the first extra hole. The first Captain's Pre
sentation Night of the sea son took place at Whalley on Friday and was well attend ed. Nine holes of golf preced ed the prize giving and Brid get Rees, with 20 points, took the honours, leaving the men trailing in her wake. Anne Prior and Iris Sher
ry have progressed to the next stages of the Daily Mail Foursomes tourna ment. They defeated Nelson away by 7 and 6. Former sprint champion,
Anne Prior OBE, lead the Whalley ladies team to vic tory by i'A-'A against Clitheroe in the ELLGA
Bronze team match. The other team members being lady captain Viv Birtvvell. Joan Whittaker, Iris Sherry and Wendy Green. Janet Sharp (99-31-68 )
won the LGU Medal and LLCGA qualifier at Whal ley. She won by four shots from Marilyn Bulcock (101- 29-72) who took second spot after a card play-off with Daphne Dawson (80-8-72). Clitheroe ladies contested
a foursomes stableford in two divisions. Marilyn Fletcher and
Kath Bolton (33) topped Division One ahead of Marie Finney and Sheila Cornwell (29). Maureen Micklevvright
and Barbara Crowther (30) finished a point clear of Jackie Bury and Carol Brown in Division Two. William Patton earned a
handicap reduction when he won the junior medal at Clitheroe with a nett 68. He won by a comfortable mar gin from James Fitton (72) with Andrew Heesom third a further shot back.
