Anita Kellington’s first port of call after taking the ferry from Holyhead to Dun- leary. The post office still bears marks from the upris ing in 1922, while the ancient university has buildings dating from 1712 to 1932, and the library contains the illustrated gospel the Book of Kells dating from the eighth cen tury. Also shown were the t\vo
cathedrals, one Protestant and the other St Patrick’s,
which was designed by Pugin. Plaques commemo rating James Joyce, W. B. Yeates and Oscar Wilde for their contribution to litera ture and the statue of Molly Malone was also on the “menu”. The journey then contin
ued to Cork and to Blarney Castle, where Dr Kellington performed the difficult task of kissing the Blarney Stone. Off the rugged coast,
Fastnet Rock, with its lighthouse, is the outpost known from weather fore casts, while Missen Head’s folded cliffs were a pointer to the geological past. Exploring the Sheeps
Head Peninsula, the audi ence learnt of the French invasion between 1798 and 1820. Mcgillycuddy’s Reeks
made a back drop for an area visited by Queen Vic toria, who considered the Molls Gap valley to be the most beautiful in Ireland. Derelict farmsteads were
a reminder of the potato famine when so many died. The coastline of the Din
gle Peninsula is a favourite for tourists and the famous oratory was built in 1300. The Burren has survived
from the Ice Age and con tains many rare plants. There was a wealth of colourful flowers, including the Burnet rose and masses of sea pinks. The quality of the pic
tures was superb and were accompanied by Irish folk music. The evening ended with close-ups of the rare white orchid known as Kelly’s Orchid.

Don’t miss out on giving blood
EXISTING, lapsed and new blood donors are urged to attend sessions in West Bradford in May. They will take place at
the Village Hall, in Grindle- ton Road, on Wednesday, May 2nd, and Wednesday, May 30th, from 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 5-30 to 7-30 p.m. on both days. With two bank holiday
weekends in May, atten dance a t donor sessions
usually dips, which can have an adverse effect on blood stocks across the country Cathy Davies, communi
cations officer for the National Blood Service, said: “We understand that people use the bank holiday weekends as an opportuni ty to go away, but the demand for blood never stops. We are urging people to please try and attend a
session in their local area before, during or after the bank holiday.” Anyone aged between 17
and 60, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12 lbs) and in general good health could potentially s ta r t saving lives by becoming a blood donor. For more informa tion or for details of other sessions in your area call 08457 711711 or visit

A ‘reel good talk’ from Peter
RETIRED headteacher Peter Edwards regaled Clitheroe and District Probus Club with stories and poems in Lancashire dialect. Ranging from delightful
ly absurd jokes to poignant verse about the grim days of the coalmines, Mr Edwards entranced his audience, even bursting into song on occasion. Familiar and unfamiliar anecdotes describing the
way of life decades ago were much appreciated by his audience of mainly “local lads”, who realised that they, too, had grown up through many of the events described— the days of rag and bone men, coal deliver ies by horse and cart, housewives cleaning front steps, outside privies, and the Second World War. Interspersed with consid appreciative
erable applause, the trip down
Memory Lane was an out standing talk delivered by an expert in the life and times of Lancashire lads and lassies of long ago. The vote of thanks was
given by the immediate past chairman. Cliff Astin. Clitheroe and District
Probus next meets at 10-45 a.m. on May 4th at the Pendle Club, Lowergate, Clitheroe when James Hal- sall will give a talk entitled “The Ribble Valley”.
