cricket club wants ? AS a resident of Read for 42 years, I am used to noise from Read Cricket Club when they have won games and lost games, along with music from cel ebrations. Unfortunately more recently the

noise, which disturbs local residents late at night, is shouting and swearing from people who are apparently enjoying themselves, but a t the expense of others. If this is how a sports club conducts

itself, then I would no longer wish to give it my support. It may be private parties which cre

I WAS greatly saddened this evening to find that the beautiful otter with salmon sculpture, placed in Brunger- ley Park barely a fortnight ago, had been severely damaged. A heavy instrument had been used

to knock the head off the figure. This appears to have happened overnight on April 19th to 20th. The police have been informed,

but your readers may be able to assist by reporting any unusual or suspicious behaviour they might have noticed, on that or any other day or evening. The old sculptures, which were

made of wood, had a natural life span which is now virtually ovei' and most have been removed. Specially carved stone, however, is

something we e.xpect to last for many years, if not decades.

Pat on the back for

our disposal staff 1 SHOULD like to offer my thanks and praise to the staff of the Hen- thorn and Petrie Household Waste Disposal Centres, or as they are bet ter known... tips. Recently 1 helped my daughter

move from Essex to Shropshire. Inevitably in clearing her house in Billericay, a large number of items were surplus to requirements. “Take them to the tip," 1 advised,

looking at pieces of wood, metal, hardcore and soil. She returned dis appointed. They would take none of these. Apparently Billericay has a recy

cling system which allows house holders to separate rubbish into cardboard, paper and plastic bottles in one bin and a container for glass, as well as non-recyclable waste, in another bin. All well and good, but the tip will take virtually nothing. How glad I was to return to the

Ribble Valley where, over many years, I have had the satisfaction of taking all kinds of items, incdluding my plastic, glass, cardboard and paper etc. and much more to our tips, and had the pleasure of know ing that most of my waste was being recycled. In the past year my husband and I have combined two homes into one

What sort of person did such a thing? As a member of the council which

initiates and maintains this park and the artwork in it, I deplore the atti tudes and actions of the few who would deprive the many of hours of enjoyment, and in doing so have wasted significant public money. To the sculptor, Fiona Bowley, I

express my profound regrets that her outstanding work has been treated in this way. I hope that it will be pos sible soon to identify those responsi ble so that they can be involved in some form of reparation. I also hope th a t they may be

helped to discover some of the many activities available in this area which arc more constructive than their efforts of last night.

least a bit towards reducing unneces sary landfill. All this and peacocks too!

New rail service? It will never happen

I READ a few weeks ago that within four years there will be a half-hour rail service to and from Clitheroe. It will never happen. Then in last week’s paper I read

that Northern Rail will be able to manage the service with greater emphasis on meeting local people’s needs. That won’t happen either. Does that mean a later train service from Manchester, Bolton and Blackburn after 11-30 p.m. so that myself and other people can travel to see concerts or have a night out? The current lat est time of 9-45 p.m. is no good to anybody. That is why a lot of people don’t use the trains at night and they are empty.' Can Northern Rail promise a late service? 1 don’t think so.

ate the problem, or a few individuals, but it reflects upon the club and it should seriously consider if unsociable behaviour is the image it wants to portray.

NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED Does anyone have

copies of photos? WHEN St Mary’s School moved from Pendle Street East to Watt Street, a coffee morning and exhibition of old school memorabilia were held. My family lent two school photo

graphs, one of my last year a t St Mary’s in 1949 of the whole school taken in the yard, and one of my sis ter’s last year in school in 1956 - again of the whole school. We were given to understand that

these photographs would be kept at St Mary’s now school for future reference of how things were. However, they appear to he missing.

If anyone knows of the whereabouts of these two (maybe they were bor rowed and are still waiting to be returned), we would be grateful for their return, or if anyone else has the same school photographs and would bo kind enough to lend them, we could then have copies made. We were planning to use them in

the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times and the Padiham Express. They can either he returned to me

at my home address, or to St Mary’s School or to Father Peter Birming ham. They are distinctive, having the

names of every pupil printed at the bottom.

We need people

willing to serve BECAUSE four existing members are resigning and no new candidates have come forward to stand in the Whalley Parish Council election, there will be no election and the council will be reduced to five existing members, pre sumably with powers to co-opt. It has long been my personal view

that the parish council for many years has been dominated by members located in the village centre and the Chamber of Trade. Surely, there must be non-political

community-minded people in loca tions like Calderstones, Moorfield, Whitams and Woodlands willing to come forward and make the council more representative of the village as a whole.

A correction to an election leaflet

I FEEL I must write to correct a statement contained in an election leaflet which was put through my door yesterday. In this leaflet there is reference to

Coun. Joyce Holgate being one of the founders of the Whalley Pickwick Night. I, as a member of Whalley Lions

Club, brought the idea to the club as a replacement for the annual summer fair which we had held in the Abbey grounds for some years. The idea was accepted and planning began so that the first of these evenings could take place in December, 1998. With the help of publicity and

sponsorship, the event went ahead. As part of our planning we invited Whal ley Chamber of Trade to get involved, but very few of the shopkeepers seemed interested and it took some two or three years before the whole village joined in. Coun Holgate was a member of the

chamber and I think she probably was one of the few business people to take part from the outset. Other than that, she had no direct connection with the original idea.

I feel let down by

local bus transport I WAS really dismayed on Saturday, April 14th, to hear from other fellow passengers that the local number C6 l)us was being withdrawn and being replaced by number Cl. I used the bus last week several

times and had not been made aware of the changes nor were the revised timetables distributed by the bus drivers. I obtained one from the Tourist Information Centre, which is also threatened with closure. On checking bus times I was further

dismayed. The first bus leaves Clitheroe town centre at 9-40 a.m. and the last leaves at 2-40 p.m. As the majority of passengers using

this route are 60-plus, it seems the “powers that be” expect older locals to be tucked up safe at home by 3 p.m. or do they think they will be a nuisance on the streets after that time? Bus users don’t usually have the use

of a car and some find it difficult to walk even the short distance to and from the town centre, especially if car rying shopping.

Another issue is the three or four steps to be negotiated to get on the

number Cl. Having multiple sclerosis I find it difficult and I’m sure elderly passengers do too.

Appointments at the health centre will have to be made between 10 a.m.

and 2 p.m., these times to include health centre lunch breaks. To visit Blackburn, Burnley, Skip-

ton etc is also going to be impossible as there will not be a local bus connec tion from the interchange. A very short time ago the first bus

on this route left the town centre at 8- 30 a.m. and the last to leave was 5-45 p.m. Times changed again six months ago to 9-20 a.m. and 4-20 p.m., now 9- 40 a.m. and 2-40 p.m. Is the next move for the service to be discontin ued completely? I certainly hope not. I’ve had to alter the time of a regular appointment twice in six months. If it is a case of financial cutback why give people a free bus pass, but not let them use it to travel locally at reason able times?

Olympic journey has begun for canoeist

by Adrian Capstick

THE journey to the 2008 Beijing Olympics has begun for one local canoeist. Sawley paddler Jonnie

Schofield, on the left of the picture, has been selected to represent Great Britain at two events that represent the first step to selection for the great est show on earth. The former Clitheroe Royal

Grammar and Pendle Primary School pupil will compete tor his country at the Olympic Discipline of Men’s Kayak Sprint racing a t Zagreb in Alay, followed by the Euro pean Wild Water Champi onships a t Bihac in Bosnia later the same month. Now studying at Loughbor

ough University, he had an exciting weekend at the Notr tingham selection races earlier this month, that saw him do well at his first serious foray into a different discipline. A former junior champion in

the wildwater discipline, Schofield displayed his impres sive talent at the two-day flat- water racing team selection event at the National Water Sports Centre in the city. And the results from the

weekend determined the team selection for international rac ing in 2007 - an important qualifying year for the Olympics in two years time. The 21-year-old showed

excellent form by winning his race in the K2 (kayak doubles) 1,000m with Ben Brown. The 200m race saw

Schofield setting a course record, blasting down in a record time of 36.1 seconds. Sunday’s K2 500m race con

tinued to show Schofield’s strength, with he and Brown in the lead for the majority of the race, but it came down to pure strength and adrenalin over the last lOOra, and they were just beaten to the line by Neil Fleming and Brendan Maloney. Tim Brabants, the 2006 European Champion and

Airborne help for tree fall man

AIRBORNE aid came to the rescue of a 36-year-old man who suffered suspected back injuries in a fall at his Clitheroe home on Monday. The North West Air Ambu

lance was called to the scene at 2 p.m. when the man, who has not been named, fell 20 feet to the ground while chopping branches from a tree. Paramedics assessed and immobilised him and he was flown to the Royal Preston Hos

pital, the journey taking just five minutes. The North West Air Ambu

lance is a registered charity and receives no mainstream funding, yet it costs £1.9 million a year to maintain this vital life saving service. Donations can be made by ringing 0800 587 4570, send ing cheques to FREEPOST North West Air Ambulance, or online at: www.northwestairam- bulance.co.uk

World silver medallist contin ued to show why he is the best male racer in Britain, if not the world. The 30-year-old Nottingham-based doctor had a powerful start in the 500m race on the Sunday, which saw him lead over Schofield and cross in firs t place, with Schofield in second. Team manager Alan

Williams said: “Qualification for the 2008 Olympic Games is a dream for many GB athletes.

-J r % I- 6 oy U' cj u ti '3 y y y <a "Our senior team has some

great crews, who have clearly set their sights on Olympic qualification. “With three new course

records at the April Regatta set by athletes hoping to qual ify for the first World Cup competitions, the competition for team places has never been tougher. " I’m sure the GB flatwater

team will continue to improve through the 2007 season."
