World Cup call for restaurant boss

by Faiza Afzaal

A LANGHO hotelier is tantalising the tastebuds of VIP Bangladeshi cricket fans. Shahid Ali, who owns Bengali restaurant

Sylhet, in Whalley Road, flew to Barbados yesterday as part of an all-expenses-paid trip to cook up an authentic treat for Bangladeshi supporters enjoying the 2007 World Cup of Cricket final on Saturday. The father-of-two was given the task of put

ting his culinary skills to good use and dishing up 30 portions of his head chef, Masrob Ali’s mouth-watering signature dish “Bengal Chi- tal Fish Cutlets” - a very popular meal in the Sylhet region of Bangladesh. Although the 36-year-old remained tight-

lipped about the recipe, he said it will take hours to prepare the dish, and earlier this week was busy ordering fresh fish from Old ham and Burnley to ensure Bangladeshi food lovers are served only the best. Speaking to the Clitheroe Advertiser and

Times before he left. Shahid, who has been running the popular restaurant for just over a year, said he was very excited, but nervous at the same time. “Initially, I thought someone was playing a

joke,” he said. “I was approached by a chef in London, who is aware that our restaurant is renowned for the Bengal Chital Fish Cutlets, which are a big hit among Bangladeshis.

Si “In fact, a Bengali meal without fish is

incomplete. “I was delighted to help. The fish has to be

carefully scaled, gutted and deboned and takes a long time to prepare. Once carefully and creatively cooked, it will be served with rice.” Lucky Shahid is over the moon after being

told that his three-day trip to the island will also include rubbing shoulders with the likes

of Bangladeshi cricket players and the team’s captain, Habibul Basher. He added: “I am absolutely honoured. It’s a

big recognition not only for our restaurant, but for the Ribble Valley too.” Our picture shows (from left) Mohammed

Asab Miah, Masrob Ali and Shahid Ali with the fish which will be served to Bangladeshi supporters.
