Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) Champions win tight derby finish
derby to open their Ribbles- dale League defence. And elsewhere, there
C
were wins for Ribblesdale Wanderers and Whalley. For Clitheroe, new pro-
.,^-fessional and opening bats man Michael Papps led the way, ably assisted by a half century from 13-year-old prodigy Jack Dewhurst. And five wickets from
Josh Marquet and four catches from wicket keep ing captain Simon Coulter wrested the points away from Whalley Road. The Chatburn Road side
were put into bat and got off to a superb start when Peter Dibb drove World Cup star Thomas Odoyo for two straight boundaries in his first over. Kiwi Papps kept the
score ticking over, as Dihb rushed to 18 in no time before he chased a wide one and was caught behind. Neil Bolton followed
Dibb back to the dressing room as a third ball duck left him scratching his head. But Dewhurst joined Papps and got off the mark
HAMPIONS Clitheroe saw off Read in a tight
wth a sweet back-foot drive through the covers off Andrew Rushton. Rushton, who had
accounted for Dibb and Bolton, ended with 3-55. Some excellent running
between the wickets and quality batting followed for the next 20 overs, as Papps and Dewhurst gave a mas ter class in how to build an innings. Papps reached his 50
with a straight six off Odoyo, and young Dewhurst reached his maid en 50. This platform set up some top bashing by the
, lower order, once Papps had run himself out going for a risky double and Dewhurst was caught on the edge. Danny Glover smashed
20 off 10 balls and captain Coulter did almost the same with 21 off 14 to reach 204, a score the skipper would quite happily have settled for in his first game in charge. Last season's leading
wicket Marquet opened the bowling against the hosts, and soon proved ho still is the best around.
Beating the bat on
numerous occasions, it was only going to be a matter of time before he opened his 2007 account. Warren Eastham snicked
to Coulter who made no mistake with the catch. O'Connor followed, again
caught behind, and Read were struggling at 30-2. Player-of-the-year Will
Driver was still a t the crease and looked very good all around the wicket, but Marquet got his third wick et as an edge from Michael Whalley was parried by slip fielder Bolton into the grateful hands of pro Papps. However, Odoyo and Dri
ver proved to be a key part- nership for Read, and Clitheroe knew they had to stem the flow of runs if they were to win the game. Some quality bowling
from Mark Hargreaves, Papps and Neil Bibby saw the run rate creep up, and the Read pro knew he had to play some big shots, which eventually saw him trapped Ibw by Bibby. 'The rest of the batsmen had no answer to Marquet's
second spell, and Driver had no support as he racked up his first ton of the season to see his side finish at 187-8. Driver’s 109 scooped his
side four points for pushing the score to within so many runs of the target. Clitheroe entertain Cher

perfect s ta r t at home to Blackburn Northern in an 18-run victory over their hotly-tipped visitors, thanks to an impressive bowling display. Admittedly the Black
J
burn side were without their full-time professional Alan Kruger, and had to look to the substitute duties of Worcester's Shaftab Khalid, but i t wasn't with the hat that this game was won. Wanderers took to the
crease first and had an unremarkabie effort with the bat, which was only saved by the mid to late order efforts of Craig Hall (23), Gavin McGuire (30)
oe Scuderi's Ribblesdale Wanderers got off to the
and Joe Bunyan (21), aided by 21 extras. The visitors had looked
in the driving seat as former Clitheroe bowler Farooq Butt (4-53) dispensed with four of the top order, Scud- eri exiting leg before for just seven. Aided by fellow treble
winner Naeem Ashraf (2- 19) and Khalid (3-30), it had looked bleak for the home side after ducks for Martin Peel, Stephen Kerr and Liam Gidlow as the side stalled a t 136 all out. However, three wickets
apiece for David Howard (3- 29) and Barry Spencer (3- 37), coupled with 2-32 from Ryan Gladwin, and the all- important wicket of Ashraf from Liam Gidlow, gave Wanderers a fantastic victo ry from an impressive bowl ing performance as the visi tors were skittled for 118. On Saturday Ribblesdale

as he hit all four Rimington goals. Mankowski had a couple
of efforts early on, before Maclean tapped in the opener after O’Neill beat the off-side trap. Maclean lashed home an
unstoppable second, before Kershaw made a fine reflex save with his feet as a wicked deflection almost
. beat him. Good pressure by Lewis
led to O’Neill providing the third for Maclean before the break. In the second half, O'Neill's attempted lob over the keeper was poorly directed, but Maclean grabbed his fourth, before Silsden scored a consola tion, and then Kershaw made an incredible save when a cross-shot deflected off Lawson, and the big keeper flung himself to his right to parry away. , Silsden hit the post late on but the visitors were not to be denied. RIMINGTON Reserves
kept their title challenge on track over the week, but suffered cup final heart break. The locals went down 2-1
to Stacksteads in the league, but bounced back to beat Peel Park 5-2 and are now three points adrift of leaders Colne, with two games in hand.
But Colne had the edge
in their Norman Pratt Tro phy Final, emerging 2-1 winners. Against Stacksteads, Ben
Threlfall, with a fierce strike from 25 yards, gave the locals the lead, only for the Rossendale side to come from behind to win. Then followed the cup
final, and despite defeat, Rimington went away with their heads held high. Colne went in front after
some good football, but Matt Garner squared for Mark Leach to poke home from two yards. The decisive goal came
from Colne 10 minutes into the second half, as a central defender headed home from a corner. Tired legs couldn’t pre
vent Rimington seeing off Peel Park back in league action though. Gari Haslam and
Threlfall gave the locals a two-goal lead, before Peel Park pulled one back. At half-time, manager
Liam Carter came on to freshen things up, and forced an own goal for the third. Peel Park again reduced
the deficit, before Threlfall scored his second, followed by a free kick from Jason Farmer from his own half, which looped over a bewil dered keeper for the fifth. A FTER continuing their

began badly for Chipping, as the home side took the lead with a dubious penalty, but they were soon level through midfielder Chris Leighton. Steve Proctor then saw a
penalty saved, but man-of- the-match Danny Austin fired home from eight yards. After the break, the deci
sive goal came when, from Fletcher’s quick free kick, Austin blasted the ball past the exposed keeper. Rampant Chipping
added a fourth with the goal of the game as Grant Hey wood’s cross was power fully headed home at the back post by Ryan Hilton. However, a t home to
Hoghton, Chipping put in a much less polished display and, came away with a 3-3 draw. Chipping raced into a two-goal lead in the opening 10 minutes with efforts from Austin and Heywood. ■ But they were guilty of lotting Hoghton back into the game, and they pulled the scores level before half time and then went in front in the second half, all goals resulting from poor defend ing by the home side. Hoghton could have
killed the game off had they shown a little more compo sure in the finai third, but Chipping snatched a late goal to share the spoils, as the ball dropped kindly for Joe Baines to steal in and smash home. Chipping wiil have to

start, and after waves of attacks came to nothing, Holgate managed to put them 1-0 up, after following up his first shot. The second half was also
one-way traffic, with Jimmy Clegg and Avci threading plenty of throughballs for Rung and Holgate, who were unlucky
not to double the slender lead. However, with 15 minutes
remaining, the defence went to sleep, and a Keighley for ward ran onto a hopeful punt up-field and his shot somehow squirmed under the diving Mashiter to earn the home side a point. All of the players and
staff would like to thank the supporters who have travelled far and wide to watch the side play, and also Pete and Claire at the White Lion for their contin ued support. Slanhill WMC............2

it was Cordingley who sent back the prolific Azmat with a catch taken by club captain Martin Davies. And the former Darwen
man was the main contrib utor with the bat for Whal ley in their winning reply of 180-5. Earby finished on 178-8,
and, in reply, the runs were shared out in a team effort. Ediriweera (37), Lee
Kearsley (38), Cordingley (45), and the undefeated knocks of Alex Whelan (18 not out) and Mark Fallon (22 not out) saw the side to victory. Azmat took 2-59 for the

Richard Shovelton 3-51 as the side eventually ripped through the order. In reply, Chris Wadding-
ton made a brisk 29, but wickets fell too quickly, and only Andy Booth really got hold of the bowlers with a fine 29, but went for one big shot too many when it looked like Chatburn might scrape home. But it was to no avail, as
they finished three runs short of the mark. Meanwhile, Chatburn
seconds started the new sea son with a nail-biting four run victory over Gargrave. The villagers batted first
and scored 116, with Nick Hutchinson the backbone of the innings with an e.xcel- lent knock of 53. There were useful contri

dismissed for 112, having been, a t one stage, 65-2. The pick of the bowling was skipper Chris Mulhearn with 6-52 and the other wicket taker was Rob Devine with 3-30.

Clitheroe RUFC........38 Chorley....................21 THIS six-try exhibition of top-drawer rugby has been a long time coming, but cer tainly worth the wait. Clitheroe threw caution
to the wind right from kick off.
The forwards were in
dominant mood, and in spite of still having their wobbles a t scrum time, in the loose they were ou t standing. With the ball on the front
foot, it was easy for the back line to look dangerous. Scrum half Mike Dawson
gave his opposite number a nightmare afternoon, and the centre pairing of Alex Hough and Bill Thatcher made all sorts of mischief for the visitors. Plus with the speed of
young guns Ed Rigby and Joe Lee on the wings, there was a threat from all areas of the pitch. For the record, the
Clitheroe try scorers were second row Bobby Wilkin son, centre Alex Hough, wing Ed Rigby, open side wing forward James Arms- Park and number eight Oliver McEntyre, who nabbed two tries. After the match, Graves
was unanimously reelected as club captain for next sea son, which will be Ciitheroe RUFC's 30th anniversary. This Saturday the second
XV, the Cavaliers, play their final fixture in a friendly against Skipton at Littlemoor, kick-off 3 p.m. Rossendale...............0 Clitheroe Buccaneers Under M s ................ 33 CLITHEROE produced an impressive display in this convincing win. Within two minutes the
locals were on the score- sheet with a well-worked try from the elusive Ryan Lewis, who ducked and dived every would be tack ier to score on the left side of the posts.
WHALLEY A foimd out why defending champions Black burn Northern are favourites to retmn their East Lancashire Open Tennis League title in a 4-0 defeat. For last year’s runners-up,
Jerry Brees and Connor Bunting lost their opening match in three sets, and their other rubber in two. Richard Lambert and Nick
Thomas also played well, but suffered the same fata New members are welcome

established players to absolute beginners. Anyone interested should
contact Paul Jenkins (01254 822673) or Roger Walker (0125-1822047). Meanwhile, Clitheroe A
came up against Burnley A in both league and cup. In the cup, Roger Raven-
scrolt and captain Derek Par rott had no difficulty winning G-1, 6-1, while Phil Mileham and Steve Pym prerailed 6-'l, W. In their return rubber they
A second trj' came within
minutes from scrum hah Jack McKenna, who used a bail from the base of the scrum to score under the posts. And the marauding
Clitheroe team scored another four unanswered tries through Ackroyd, Lee- Millington, Backhouse ar,4} Lewis. The second half was a
tighter affair, with Rossendale playing well in parts. However, the locals, who
managed to score three more tries through Robin son, Ackroyd and Lee-Rim- mington. Colne and Nelson Minis. 20 Clitheroe Buccaneers Minis....................... 35 THE young Buccaneers deliver^ their best perform ance of the season to over whelm Colne with an excel lent display of running rugby. After only two minutes, '*
Tom Taberner cut infield to score under the posts. Minutes later Jarvis
Stanton barged his way over for Clitheroe’s second score. The Buccaneers then lost
concentration and Colne scored four quick tries just before half-time. in the second half,
Taberner sprinted down the wing to score his second try. Minutes later, big Will
Lawton seized the ball from a Colne breakdown, storm ing over from 15 yards to level the scores. Sensing victory, the BuesW
caneers maintained pres sure. Man-of-the-match Sam
Hill’s elusive running brought a deserved fifth try, to give Clitheroe tlie lead, and Jim Carter was rewarded by a well-worked trj' in the corner, before Hill’s second try sealed an excellent Clitheroe victory by a 7-4 margin. The side are without a
game on Sunday so training is as usual, meet at the club house at 10-30 a.m.
earned a conclusive 6-1,6-0 result, while Ravenscroft and Parrott didn’t have things all their own way as the first two sets were shared in close tie breaks. The league match at Bum-
ley was a different affair alto gether. Mileham and Pym suc
cumbed 6-4, 6-1, and on the other court, Ravenscroft and Parrott took the first set, but the home side fought back and took the final two. In the return rubbers, Mile
ham and Pym lost in two sets, while Ravenscroft and Parrott,^| went down fighting in tlirca The Open B team were in
