Rovers enjoy their new fortress home
By Chris Boden
BLACKBURN Rovers Ladies have made their Shawbridge home some thing of a fortress in a record-breaking first season in the PA Women’s Nation- ' al Division. And manager Adam
Lakeland is delighted that his squad will be returning to Ciitheroe PC next season as they look to build on a campaign which saw them achieve a superb fourth- place finish. After bringing the cur-
ir, tain down on the season with a 2-0 friendly defeat against World Under 20 champions USA at Shaw bridge on Saturday, Lake land said: “Clitheroe is a friendly club, and the peo ple down there have made all the staff, supporters and players feel very welcome. “That has helped us on
the pitch as well, and made us feel relaxed. “We’ve made Shawbridge
a bit of a fortress. “We’ve only lost twice there since I took over in
^ October, against Chelsea and Everton, and have won two Performance of the Round awards in the E-ON
PA Cup against Leeds and Chelsea. We also beat Charlton there. “I t ’s a psychological
thing, I think the fact we have won 10 games there, and beaten some of the big teams, gives us confidence, no matter who we play, so we’re delighted to be com ing back next season.” Lakeland, who went to
school locally at St Augus tine’s, spent five years with Rovers’ Pootball in the Community Scheme, where he earned his coaching badges, before being handed
hi ‘a r-->.,
the job as Rovers’ Ladies’ Reserves manager. He was then promoted to
first team assistant manag er, before taking tbe top job in October, and he has enjoyed seeing his charges more than achieve their aim of staying in the top flight this season: “When I took over, I thought we had play ers that had the ability to stay up, and it was a case of making them believe they were good enough. “We try to make them
confident and play as a team, and we have achieved
Rare autographs among football memorabilia
By

A SELECTION of rare football memorabilia has been unearthed by the Clitheroe branch of Age Con cern. The Moor Lane shop, which helps raise money for the elderly,
■ has generously been donated sever al items which will be of great interest to fans young and old. And the hope is to raise as much
,
money for the charity as possible, by selling such pieces as a complete set of autographs from Burnley’s 1947 FA Cup Final side, with the 60th anniversary of the-1-0 defeat at Wembley to Charlton Athletic just a fortnight ago.
■ Along with more Clarets memo ries, there are items of interest for Blackburn Rovers fans as well, a framed selection of archive photo graphs of England’s 1966 World
Cup success, books on George Best and old football magazines from the 1960s, and a number of match pro grammes from at home and abroad. Some of the items are to be put
on display in tbe shop window, and shop manager Sheila Garside said: “Word has got around, and there have been a lot of people asking about several of the items, includ ing the 1947 Burnley autographs, and a lot of collectors have been into the shop. “The items are for sale, and we
hope to promote Age Concern and raise money for the charity. “A lot of people don’t know that
the money we make here stays in Lancashire, and it is all for a very worthy cause. We rely purely on donations, and we are very grateful for all we receive.” For more information on the
memorabilia, contact the shop on 01200 453071, or visit in person.

more than we set out to. “I ’m very proud of the
players and all the staff.” 'The season has also ended
with call-ups to the full England squad for keeper Kay Hawke - who is com peting with first choice Rachel Brown, who hails from Burnley - and striker Katie Anderton, but, as Lakeland points out, the club bas earned internation al recognition all through the squad: “It’s good for the individuals to get recogni tion, and Kay has been out standing, while Katie’s goals
have helped us achieve what we have. “But we also have Jayne
Eadie, who has been with England Under 19s, and Lynda Shepherd with the Under 21s, and to have all those girls representing their country at different age groups speaks volumes. “We have very talented
individuals with a team ethic, and they have got their chance to shine, so I’m pleased for them.” Blackburn Rovers Ladies

Emma’s rapid rise to call-up
By Phil Simpson
CHATBURN Road seems to have an unusual sporting effect on its residents! The road, home to Clitheroe Cricket Club, also houses Lancashire batsman Jack Dewhurst. And now, it has yielded
another, in the form of 14- year-old Emma Calvert. The Clitheroe Royal
Grammar School student has been selected tor Lan cashire Girls Under 15s to face Durham in the North East on Sunday. ■ And it represents a rapid
rise for Emma, who was spotted representing her school at a recent cricket tournament. She was part of the
Under 15s side that won the district heat of the Lady Taverners Six-A-Side Indoor Gricket Tournament in Blackpool at the turn of the year. And after featuring at
Old Trafford in the regional heat, she has since come through two trials with Lancashire to be named in Sunday’s travelling party. Emma, who is primarily a right-handed pace bowler.
is one of four CRGS stu dents chosen across the Under 15 and Under 13 age groups. And her father, John
Calvert, said: “They spot ted her at the District event, and then came to watch her again at the Regionals at Old Trafford. “From there they asked if
she wanted to go for trials, and it has just all come at once. “It is a great achieve
ment for Emma, especially as she has not been playing cricket long. “Most of her team-mates
in the Lancashire side on Sunday will have played cricket for years, and go to cricket playing schools, so it will be a culture shock. “But she will come
through it with flying colours and give it her best.” Emma is pictured as she
prepares for her county debut. (A150507/10)
