dropping into the Auris 1.4 WTi is that this is a lot of car for not a lot of engine to send up the Queen’s highway. And so it proves. With 96 b.h.p.
on tap, performance is not what you would describe as vivid, but the engine is certainly game and does not leave you with bleeding eardrums when you rev it hard. In fact, the power plant is rather
tuneful, which is just as well as you will need a heavy right boot to make respectable progress. Leather the

Auris off the line and it will get to 60 m.p.h. in 12.7 seconds on the way to a maximum of 106mph. The Auris’ 1.4-litre engine fea
tures VVT-i, a system that utilises computerised timing control of the inlet valves. In theory, this promotes torque at low revs and power at high engine speeds. Ride, handling and road-holding are all marginally above class average, but the steering, while accurate, does not impart much in the way of feedback, rob bing you of confidence when you are really pushing on. The plus side is that it makes the Auris incredibly easy to park, helped by good all round visibility. The 1.4-Iitre VVT-i engine is
available with either the three-door or five-door body style and either T2 or T3 trim levels. As you would expect from Toy
ota, standard equipment levels are e.xcellent. The T2 trim in three-door guise opens at £11,995. Equipment at this level includes air condition ing, front electric windows, an MP3 compatible CD stereo, anti-lock brakes and 15 in. steel wheels. Trade up to the T, which starts at
£12,995 and you will also get rear electric windows, colour keyed mir rors and door handles, more speak ers for your stereo, leather trim for the gearshift and steering wheel, audio controls on said wheel and 16in. alloy rims. Rest assured, you are not going to
lose sleep at night fretting about the running costs of an Auris 1.4 VVTi.
Fuel economy is extremely reason able as long as you are not ragging the 1398cc four within an inch of its life.
Driven sensibly, you will manage
a combined figure of 40.9 m.p.g. with town driving dropping it to 32.5 m.p.g. and open roads seeing a 47.9 m.p.g. return. The 1.4-litre model looks one of
the best choices in the Auris range. It is another £l,500-odd to trade up to the 1.6-litre Dual VVT-I car which goes a little faster, but why would you want to? The Auris is not about speed but
sensibility. You buy this car for its reliability, its sheer commonsense and its excellent dealer support. Which is presumably what most family hatchback buyers on a £12,000 budget want: Isn’t it? '
PEUGEOT is to launch the 207 Van
to replace its popular 206 model. Based on the 207 th re e -d o o r h a tch ba ck m o d e l , the 20 7 Van shares the same overall length, width, wheel base and overall height. This p ro v id e s a ma x im um load a re a of 1.1 m3. It will be available at launch with three engine options, two HDi diesels, 1.4 litre 70 b.h.p. and 1.6 litre 90 b.h.p. and a 1.4 litre 75 b.h.p, petrol engine.
