9 Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) www.clitheroeadvertiser.co.uk Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, May 17th, 2007 45 Pupils are crystal clear!

BUDDING scientists at two Ribble Valley schools are “clear as crystal” about their latest experiment. Pupils from St Augustine’s RC High

School, Billington and Brennand’s Endowed Primary School, in Slaidburn, used a combination of scientific knowledge and intuitive flair to grow the best crystals in the county.

A crystal-growing challenge was set by

orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Shameen Sam- path, who created a Lancashire-wide com petition involving students from Key Stages two to five, sponsored by his orthopaedic clinic. The Bluespot Knee Clinic. In total, 63 schools took nart in the chal

lenge, but none of the eager, young scien tists within the Key Stage four age group

New training centre for local dentists

I “HOME-GROWN” dentists should be tending the teeth of NHS I patients in the Ribble Valley within a few years, as the first sod is cut I on a local training facility. The new “Dental Education Centre” is to be built in the centre of I the region, at Accrington, with the aim of “growing our own dentists”

I to serve the boroughs of Ribble Valley, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, jRossendale and iBlackburn-with- Danven. It provide educa

tion and training facilities for eight of the 32 graduate den tal students who start training this autumn (2007) at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, before transferring next spring (2008) to the new East Lancashire Centre. The first sod has

been cut on the site, next to East Lan cashire Primary Care Trust’s new £7.5m. health centre in Paradise Street, near Accrington town centre, and now work begins in earnest to build the new dental centre. Within four years,

it is hoped dentists trained and educat ed in the area will stay on to become NHS dentists, adding to efforts being made in other ways to build up NHS dentistry capacity throughout East Lancashire. One of the other

major initiatives has been training up locally-based dental therapists to support NHS dentists work ing throughout East Lancashire. Already, nine fully-trained and accredited ther apists have started work locally. In all, four dental

centres are being set up throughout Lan cashire and Cumbria

1 ^ Wartime memories

“A TOUCH of Nostalgia” was enjoyed by 27 Clover Club members. Speaker Mr Frank Watson gave a talk

on rules and regulations from the First and Second World Wars. Illustrations included gas masks, identity cards, ration books and photographs, together with other things remembered from a child hood spent in the Acenngton area. O The next meeting on June 5th is the summer outing to Stanley Grange.

grew a crystal as large, clear or well- formed, as that submitted by St Augus tine’s, while Brennands Endowed saw off all challengers at Key Stage two withTheir pupil’s entry. Impressed with what he saw, Mr Sam-

path said: “I was delighted with the quali ty of entries during this first year of our competition, which is testimony to the enthusiasm that Lancashire’s students have for their science and the dedication of science teachers across the county. “All entries were judged by a carefully

selected panel and I thank UCLan for their support in providing us with both panel members and facilities for the judging process. “None of us had any doubt th a t the Clltheroe schools’ entries were the finest

crystal submitted at Key Stages two and four.” The competition was run in conjunction

with SETPOINT Lancashire, which will be represented at a prizegiving ceremony during school assembly a t Brennand’s Endowed Primary School tomorrow. Spon sor, Mr Sampath, will present the winning pupil with his/her prize of an engraved i- pod Nano, as well as handing over an engraved trophy to the school. Pupils at St Augustine’s RC High School

are already celebrating their success, hav ing had their prizes presented by SET- POINT’S, project officer, Mr Martin Carette. The winning pupils are pictured (from

left to right) Dominic Ginger, Liam Eddle- ston and Joseph Arnfield. (s)
