with camera club MEMBER Mike Caddy presented anoth er superlative slide talk at the latest meet ing of Ribblesdale Camera Club. I t was called “Insisting on Vision”: a
travelogue of a kind, but paralleling his vis its to Scotland, Norway and Poland was a journey into the development of his unique, personal style of photography. The presentation was divided into sec
tions by thought-provoking pieces of prose, blank verse and more conventional poetry, some composed by himself, but some from poets such as William Blake. An essential was the need to optimise the
of of
quality of light most appropriate to the landscape. Mike often has to return to the same spot again and again before condi tions are perfect. The images themselves covered land
scapes, birds and mammals; a photograph of a stoat took three days of lying on ice in a ditch before a good image was obtained. Deer in Scotland and fire salamanders in
Poland were best photographed in rain, red squirrels are better in snow, but action shots of golden eagles and sea eagles need good lighting to get the best from slow speed film. The value of the ideal light and condi
tions were readily proved by his pictures of streams and lakes lit by golden light from the sunrise or the sunset. Mike has little time for the “rules of
composition”, with their obsession for “golden thirds” and “cardinal points”. His latest work uses lens flare for creative effects. His objective is to apply the freedoms of

When mouldy bread was an ‘antibiotic’
AN open evening for Ciitheroe Lady Farmers was held at Hurst Green Village Hall. Nearly 100 members, including the
county president, listened to Dulcie Lewis, of Wensleydale, talking about “Curious Cures”. She started a career in writing more than
12 years ago, when asked to pen a book about “Kent Privvies”, then went on to writing about old cures and medical myths. She told of how people used to leave
bread on the cowbyre floor until i t had gone mouldy and then eat it - a sort of antibiotic! How they used to bash chilblains with a hollybush, rub a bald patch with honey and onion to increase hair regrowth and, worst of all, use urine as a fabric conditioner. She did say th a t gin has very healing
remedies for ladies though! Although herbal or homeopathic reme
dies are still used, members agreed some were best left in the past! Susan Whitwell thanked the speaker for
a very humorous and entertaining evening and supper was served by the committee. The next meeting is a t the Calf’s Head
Hotel, Worston, on Monday, when Peak District farmer Mr Peter Slack will be the guest speaker.
