CLITHEROE'S John Holden and race partner Andrew Winkle were sec ond in both Bavaria Side car A and B races a t the Centenary Isle of Man TT last week. The experienced biker,

who works at Johnson Matthey but recently moved from the Ribble Valley to live in Catterall near Garstang, was com peting in his 14th TT and this was his best finish yet. Holden, in his 600cc

LCR Suzuki sidecar out fit, led for the first two laps of the three-lap A race on Monday, but even tually lost out by 6.5 sec onds on corrected time, by a faster average speed of 111.668 mph. The local pair led the

field by jus t under nine seconds at the end of the opening lap, with eventual winners Dave Molyneux and Rick Long overtaking Steve Norbury and Scott Parnell for second. However, Molyneux had taken the bit between his

teeth, and as he got more and more in tune with both the circuit and his machine, he began to eat into Holden’s lead to see just two seconds between the two bikes going into the final lap, on which he overhauled Holden to win. Then on Wednesday, the

50-year-old finished run ner-up to Molyneux again in the B race, but this time by over 25 seconds. Holden and Winkle

went from third at the end of the first lap, seven sec onds behind Molyneux and Long in second, to eight seconds behind the eventual winners after the second lap, having seen the order remain the same. However, the final lap

saw leaders Nick Crowe and Dan Sayle retire due to engine failure, Molyneux extend his lead and Holden and Winkle race to their second sec ond-place finish, over a minute ahead of nearest challengers Steve Norbury and Scott Parnell in third - an exact repeat of Mon day’s A race. Holden has been racing

on and off since 1979. His previous best finish in either race at the TT was third in 2006 and 2005, and he said: "After finish ing third last year and the year before, to get two sec onds was very pleasing. “I t ’s my 14th TT and

I've led races there before, only we've always had mechanical problems in the past." Mechanical problems

appear to be a thing of the past for Holden as he and Stoke-based passenger Winkle currently lead the eight-round FSRA British F2 Sidecar Championship after three races, which next sees them in action at Pembrey in Wales this weekend. Holden would like to

thank local sponsors James Alpe Ltd, David Johnston Builders, D and A. Walmesley and Proflex Shock Absorbers.
