and the boot is large enough to qualify as an attractive bijou starter home if you were to park the S350 I tried in SW3. If you want even more room in the back, Mercedes will even sell you a long wheelbase version. After witnessing the inadequacies of my driveway, I am glad I did not opt for this when I selected my test car.
Behind the Wheel The latest generation S350

Could I Live With One? Much as I would
love to, I get the impression that while the S-class may be from Mars, I am defi nitely from Venus. IVe are operating on sepa rate social orbits and I feel rather self-con scious in a car th a t costs so much, espe cially when people gaze in to see who is behind the wheel. It is a towering achieve ment and, on merits, probably the finest car I have driven, but it is
just a little too much for me. My other half on the other hand is asleep in it as I write. I have been forsaken.

vehicle range that might sound like utter gib berish, but it us not; it is a particular version of the Peugeot Boxer panel van. Model designations like this are the norm

in the panel van sector, in which the manu facturers are faced with a labyrinthine collec tion of body styles and engines to make sense of.
In fact, with the Boxer, Peugeot has taken an approach that is refreshingly simple. The Boxer comes in three lengths (LI, L2 and L3) and two heights (HI and H2), with a choice of three engines. Our test vehicle had the middle body length, the lowest roof and the 120 b.h.p. HDi diesel engine. Now you know what we are talking about, let us get on with it.
Our L2 HI test model had a 9.5m3 load
volume and will happily shift a 1,440kg pay- load. Like all Boxers, it uses MaePherson strut suspension for the front wheels, with an anti-roll bar to enhance handling composure and a solid rear axle with leaf springs that helps keep the loading height low and that payload capacity high. Doing the business under the bonnet was a 2.2-litre HDi diesel engine with 120 b.h.p. to call upon. This does not sound like a whole lot in
today’s money, but the unit is specially tuned to produce a powerful torque output of 320Nm at just 2,000 r.p.m., equating to plen ty of shove off the line where a working panel van needs it. The ride is firmer than you will find on
many panel vans, but the taut suspension yields sharper steering responses and good body control for such a tall vehicle. I t all makes the Boxer a highly enjoyable van to drive with the dashboard-mounted gear stick ideally located and an abundance of grip at the front wheels. In congested urban areas, it is in its ele
ment and is composed enough to tackle undulating B-roads with some aplomb. On longer journeys, the firm ride means the experience is not as relaxing as with the best models in this sector, bu t the Boxer’s strengths outweigh its weaknesses. The Boxer’s stubby frontage is produced
by a nose that is in two sections. There is a chunk missing in the middle, as if it has been

There are indicators in the wing mirrors, which wwill not find favour with drivers who use their mirrors like whiskers to test the width of parking spaces or gaps in traffic, and steps in the front bumper let you climb up and clean the windscreen. Access to the rear is through the double-
hinged back doors, which swing out to 96 degrees or can be manually released to a 180 degree arc. There is a wide sliding side door on the
near side and the loading height is between 53 and 56cm, depending on the model. Other than the rear wheel arch bulges, the space inside is unilormly shaped, while the ribbed floor and abundance ol lashing points will help keep wayward items in check. The cabin says a lot about the way that

The Boxer’s dash-top clipboard is carried over from the old model and it is a feature that rivals have since pinched. There is a massive central glovebox below
the centre console and big pockets in the doors, as well as other handy shelves and pots to keep your paraphernalia in check. The Peugeot Bo.xer is a fine product with
a lot to offer panel van operators. Over the course of our test, we found the L2 HI 120 HDi model to be extremely user-friendly and surprisingly enjoyable to drive.
