• THE Valley was this week mourning two of its best-known characters, one a major figure in public life and the other a pillar of the local business community. Former Mayor of the Ribble Valley
Coun. Brian Collis has died at the age of 72 after a long battle with illness. Also gone is Mr Eric Dugdale, who
built up a local business empire and has di6d at the age of 70. For tributes to both men, see page 3.
• A NURSE who has spent the past 25 years treating Ribble Valley folk for all manner of minor ailments has retired. Sue Jackson was presented with gifts and flowers by colleagues past and present in the treatment room at Clitheroe Health Centre. Turn to page 5 for the story.

SPORTING heroes and community champions from Ribble Valley were honoured at a glittering ceremony in the borough’s
civic suite. Clubs, coaches, rising stars
and volunteers were all recog nised for their hard work and commitment at a ceremony hosted by Ribble Valley Bor ough Council’s sports devel opment team and attended by the chief executive of Lan cashire Sport, Adrian Leather. Now in their third year, the
awards are made in the fol lowing categories: Club of the Year, Coach of the Year, Vol unteer of the Year (Adult and Junior) and Rising Star. There is also a Special Recog nition Award in memory of Marjorie Partridge. Tom Bamber, Ribble Valley
Borough Council’s sports development officer, said: “The quality and quantity of nominations for the Ribble
Valley Sports and Communi ty Awards was exceptionally high and a testament to the wealth of sporting talent in Ribble Valley. “The awards ceremony was
a fantastic night and the win ners are to be congratulated for their sterling work.” This year’s winners were:
Coach of the Year - Don Lennon (Ribble Valley Ath letics Club); Club of the Year - Clitheroe Cricket Club; Ris ing Star - Stephanie Slater (swimmer); Young Volunteer of the Year - Michael Shields
(Ribble Valley Young Volun teer Programme); Adult Vol unteer of the Year - Steve Frost (Wilpshire Wanderers); Marjorie Patridge Special Recognition Award - Keith Lord (50 years service to Clitheroe Football Club). The winners will go forward
to the Lancashire Sports Awards a t Ewood Park, Blackburn, on Friday, Octo ber 5th. Our picture shows winners

Husband’s tribute to ‘wonderful wife’
A GRIEVING husband has paid tr ib u te to his “wonderful wife” who col lapsed and died suddenly a t her Ribble Valley home. Business entrepreneur
and mother-of-four Mrs Annmarie Carlton (42), pictured, died from a mas sive rupture of the cere bral artery at the garden of her home in Bolton-by- Bowland last Tuesday, while taking a break from work. Mrs Carlton and her
husband, Mark, ran AMC Marketing, which they had relocated to Bolton-By-Bowland from Sale, in Greater Manches ter. Speaking of the heart
breaking moment he found his wife collapsed, Mr Carlton said: “We had taken a break in the work we were doing for Bentley Motors and Ferrari GB. I found her under an apple tree in her beautiful gar den with her dogs running a t her side, the birds singing and the sun beat ing down on her cheeks. She would have suf
fered no pain and she looked like she had fallen asleep sunbathing.” Family and friends
gathered for the funeral service, which took place on Monday at St Bartholomew’s Church, in Tosside. Mrs Carlton leaves behind her husband and four daughters, Amy Jo (19), Lizzie (17), Lucy (15) and 14-year-old Han nah. (s) On Sunday, Bolton-by-
