Toddlers’ pedal power
TODDLERS have been busy pushing and ped alling bikes, cars and prams as part of their biggest annual fund-raiser. Youngsters at St Paul’s
Playgroup, in Clitheroe, took part in a “pedal push” event at Clitheroe Community Church. They were cheered on
by parents, grandparents and carers as they rode
around the track for almost 15 minutes, swop ping vehicles as they went round. Money raised from the
fun-filled event will be spent towards replacing some of the heavy tables to lighter fold-up tables used within the group. Pictured are toddlers
enjoying themselves ped alling away.(s)
• St Paul’s Playgroup
runs on Monday, Wednes day and Friday mornings between 9-15 a.m. and 12- 15 p.m.- There are still a few
places remaining for Sep tember. For further details,
please contact either Cathleen on 01200 425604 or Nicky on 01254 826027.

Why it’s well worth a visit
SOMETIMES described as sleepy, but awake to residents’ wishes - that is how Whalley is summed up by many. Soaked in rich heritage and awash with
hidden treasures, the pretty village offers a fascinating array of businesses, tourism, shops and perfect historic features. Of course, the river, hills, woodland and open space all add to the attraction. Situated four miles from the bustling
town of Clitheroe, the village is set on the banks of the beautiful River Calder. Visi tors cannot fail to be impressed by this gem of a place, for wherever they stand in Whalley, they are assuredly only a short distance away from something of interest. One of the best-known buildings is
Whalley Abbey. It took monks from 1296 until 1400 to complete the historic build ing. Although the actual abbey is in ruins, there are still traces of stables, offices, a cloister, dormitory and a kitchen. The landmark abbey, it’s historic retreat
house and conference centre has recently been treated to a £lm. revival plan - bringing it up to date with the 21st Cen tury. Whalley is full of surprises and there is no doubt about that. In such a relatively
small area, the village manages to combine old-fashioned charm with a robust, mod em approach to life. I t supports a surpris ing number of shops and other businesses as well as an active night life. More and more cafes and shops have
opened over the years, offering value for money and a warm Ribble Valley wel come. And there is a wide range of inter esting shops and galleries, where old cot tages rub shoulders with impressive Tudor and Georgian looking properties along the main street. The village boasts numerous pubs on
King Street where regulars and visitors can eat and enjoy good ale served by friendly pub staff. Easy to access with good rail and bus
services, Whalley offers something for everyone and its wonders never seem to cease. Many enjoyable walks can be taken
from Whalley, and the nearby rivers of Calder and Hodder provide for some breathtaking scenery. So, whether you’re planning on having a
family picnic on a summer’s day, a differ ent experience of a shopping trip or a quiet wander through a place full of history, Whalley is well worth a visit.
