Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, May 10th, 2007 11 Tories storm to election victory
by Duncan Smith and Faiza Afzaal
A VETERAN councillor with 20 years’ service, much of it as leader of Ribble Valley’s Liberal Democ rats, was among the casualties when the Conservatives stormed to a decisive election victory. They gained eight seats, strengthen
ing their grip on Ribble Valley Borough Council to occupy 29 of its <10 seats, up from 21 before Thursday’s poll. Five of those seats were taken from the Lib- Dems, including that of their leader, long-ser\dng councillor Frank Dyson. They now hold just 10 seats, down from 15 prior to the election. The Independents lost two seats to
the Tories, leaving Jim Rogerson the sole Independent councillor, elected unopposed in Alston and Hothersall ward Meanwhile Labour failed to field a single candidate in Ribble Valley, for feiting the single seat it previously held on the council. The British National Party and the
England First Party, each fielding a sin gle candidate in Clitheroe wards, also failed to gain a foothold on the council, but neither candidate finished last in their ward, with the EFP’s Paul Frank- land polling ahead of one Conservative and only 20 votes behind another. Yet it was undoubtedly the Tories’
night, with result after result sending cheers through the blue ranks. Com menting on their success, jubilant council leader John Hill, who retained his Read and Simonstone seat, said the increased majority was a vindication of the Tories’ policies over the past four years. “I feel very privileged to be a Tory in
the Ribble Valley,” he declared. “We have continued to keep our council tax down, tackled green issues and prowd-
ARCHERS Carpets in Clitheroe is offering major discounts on all carpets to celebrate its one year anniversary.
The family-run business, which opened a purpose-buiit modern showroom on Eshlon Terrace 12 months ago, wants to share its success with ioyal customers while welcoming on board new clients.
Owners Justin and Gary Archer, who already run an established carpet showroom in Accrington, said: “Since we opened up our showroom in Clitheroe, we've received a very . positive response from local people and would like to offer discounts on our full range of carpets to celebrate."
Over 15,000 sq yards of quality carpets, Archers is the largest independent buyers of roll stock and can hence offer its wide range of carpets at very competitive prices.
“We can easily beat any of the multi nationals on price,” Justin added.
Well respected in the industry, Archers is the only local approved retailer of Karndean flooring - a market leader in affordable designer floors. Made from an exceptionally durable form of customised vinyl, Karndean flooring replicates the beauty of natural flooring materials, but with none of the usual. draw backs.

ed litter and dog bins. We have retained a weekly bin collection and look for ward to rolling out wheelie bins throughout the Ribble Valley later this year. We aim to provide a healthier, greener and safer Ribble Valley.” He also claimed his party’s success
was due to its firm rejection of propos- ■ als to merge with neighbouring author ities. “We have refused to merge ivith Pen-
dle, Hyndburn or Blackburn,” said Coun Hill. “We Mill now get down to serving the community to the best of our abilities and keep our independ ence.” Among the Tory gains was Chat-
burn, where Conservative Michael Barrett polled <130 votes, well ahead of former Lib-Dem councillor Howard Douglas, on 138. “It’s come as a shock, I didn’t expect to lose by so many,” said a disappointed Mr Douglas. “I ’ve worked hard for Chatburn and done my best on the council and that’s all anyone can do.” In Chipping and Ribchester the
Tories were handed two seats on a plate when Simon Hore and Ian Sayer were elected unopposed in the wards former ly held by an Independent and a Liber al Democrat. Dilworth, in Longridge, was a key
ward, with the Conservatives taking both seats from the Lib-Dems. Ken Hind, chairman of the Ribble Valley Conservative Association, was cele brating with fellow Tory victor Andrew Gridley. In Waddington and West Bradford
the Lib-Dems lost one seat to Conserv ative Bridget Hilton and in Clitheroe’s Salthill ward, Tory Simon Farnsworth claimed the seat formerly held by Inde pendent candidate Ian Brown, who failed in his bid for re-election. But the biggest shock came in
Clitheroe’s St Mary’s ward, where Con servative newcomer Chris Punchard
polled 483 votes, a full 150 ahead of long-serving Lib-Dem Frank Dyson. Commenting on his defeat, 85-year-old Mr Dyson said he felt “slightly depressed”. “I think tonight’s result reflects anti-
Labour local government sweeping through the country and the Tories are taking advantage of that,” he said. “It’s a great pity that the Lib-Dems, the voice of reason, cannot come top.” Meanwhile, newly-elected Coun.
Punchard said he was “overwhelmed” and thanked his supporters. “It will be a nice change to have a Conservative councillor at work in a Clitheroe ward,” he said. Liberal Democrat Beverley Jones
retained her St Mary’s seat and, in a brief moment of respite for the Lib- Dems, they gained a seat in Edisford and Lom' Moor, where Ruth Harg- reaws claimed the seat previously held for Labour by John McGowan. She said; “I t has been a very tense night as this is the first time I have kood in the borough council election, but I am extremely relieved and pleased.” Mr McGowan stood for re-election as
an Independent, but the one-time Mayor polled the lowest of any candi date, with just 73 votes. Still in St Mary’s ward, the BNP’s Gavin McQuade polled 188 votes, despite being in Australia for the birth of his second child throughout the run-up to the election. “The timing was, bad, but there was nothing I could do about that!” joked Mr McQuade. He explained that his wife is Australian and as their first child was born in Eng land, they had agreed the second should be in Australia. Depite not win ning, he polled 115 more votes than Mr McGowan and was heartened by the ongoing support in the ward previous ly contested by his brother. In Clitheroe’s Primrose ward, Lib- Dems Allan Knox and Mary Robinson
comfortably held their seats, while Paul Frankland, standing for the England First Party, polled 157, six votes ahead of Conservative Phillipa Hill and only 20 behind Conservative Andrew Pear son. Describing it as “a respectable score” tor the fledgling party’s first attempt in Clitheroe, Mr Frankland said: “It’s hard to break the mould, but I put out 4,500 leaflets and only had three people take issue with me.” Husband and Mfe team Stephen and
Margaret Sutcliffe comfortably retained their Lib-Dem seats in Clitheroe’s Littlemoor ward, home to the controversy over the successful application to turn a one-time Alethodist chapel into a mosque. Both councillors backed the mosque, but only after stating their constituents’ concerns and pushing for planning con ditions to allay them. Commenting on their re-election, Stephen Sutcliffe said: “If the mosque came up again tomor row, I would do exactly the same. There has clearly been an increase in the Tory vote, but I do not' think I can blame that on the mosque issue.” On a less serious note he added: “Normally I

beat my wife by a few more votes, but this time she beat me!” In Whalley, Conservative stalwart
Joyce Holgate polled the highest votes of any candidate, 856, to retain her seat, ivith fellow Tory Terry Hill taking the second Whalley seat vacated by- Conservative Chris Sterry. Their only opposition came from
Independent Mel Diack, who put up a valiant fight to poll 571 votes - by far the highest of any unsuccessful candi date and many more than some elected in other wards. “I’m quite gutted,” said a downcast
Mr Diack, "but I really want to thank all the people who voted for me and I will continue working tor the communi ty regardless of tonight’s result. I wish my opponents well and I hope they continue their good work for W'halley.” Fittingly, it was the outgoing Mayor
of Ribble Valley, Peter Ainsworth, who carried the Tories over the voting majority threshold when the result for Clayton-le-Dale with Ramsgreave was announced. He retained his seat there along Mth fellow Conservative Doreen Taylor.
