Valuations
Choosing the right car requires much more than just a keen eye. Make sure it’s as good as it looks by booking a comprehensive inspection through one of the local companies detailed below, before you part with your money.
A qualified independent vehicle inspector will carry out a full bumper to bumper , inspection, a thorough road test and issue you wit a detailed report. If serious problems are found, the report may recommend you not to purchase, or if only minor faults are highlighted, you’ll be in a much stronger position to negotiate a lower price or insist on repairs. h e craze for “hot hatch” GTi models took off in the ’80s, a customer back lash to the reluctance of mainstream makers to build the kind of affordable Road
sters buyers had got used to in the ’70s. Brieflj', VW Golf GTis, Ford Escort XR3is and Peugeot 205 GTis were oh every street corner. But then, as quickly as the trend had
appeared, it faded. By the early ’90s, spi ralling insurance costs were making owner ship of this class of car look anything but affordable.. Worse, mainstream buyers did not want
the boy racer image that by now was associ ated with the GTi market. This spawmed the “warm hatch” market. The most affordable were mildly tarted-up superminis, usually featuring the largest petrol engine from the mainstream range, a slightly stiffer set-up and the obligatory spoilers and badging. With outputs of around 100 b.h.p., none of
these cars were particularly fast, but they did look the part and usually handled just as well - or as badly - as their far more potent coun terparts in the “hot hatch” GTi category. You got all the advantages of good fuel econ omy and relatively low insurance groupings too. I t was almost the best of both worlds.
Cheap & Cheerful Options Plenty of choice here. If you really are
urban-bound and want something very cheap and small, then F ia t ’s citj'car, the little Cinquecento Sporting, is a hoot. If you want something almost as much fun, but slightly better built and able to do longer journeys,' then try Peugeot’s 106 XSi. If you are after something that looks and feels a bit newer, it is also worth considering one of the first Fiat Punto Sporting models, which had I.6-litre engines mated to a close-ratio 6-speed gear box for extra urban fun.
Affordable Mid-Rangers The definitive “hot hatch” of the ’80s was
probably VW’s GoF GTi. The car was so suc cessful in the UK that by the early ’90s, the importers had unwisely decided to extend use of the GTi badge to lowered-powered models: as a result, customers now chose between 8- valve (“warm”) and 16-valve (“hot”) 2.0-

litre GTi variants. And for space with pace, Nissan’s Almera SRi and Peugeot’s 306 XSi are worth trying. For something a little newer but still offering good value, why not try Pro ton’s Satria GTi?
Desirable But Potentially Pricey If you can afford something newer, then
there are plenty Of post-’98 Vauxhall Astra Sport and SRi models with the 1.8 16-valve engine around, although, like Nissan’s Micra 1.4 Sport and Hyundai’s MK2 Accent MVi, they are npt particularly inspiring. A later Gitroen Saxo VTR is a better
choice here, if you can get one with the newer 98 b.h.p. engines introduced at the end of 2000. Also fun are VW’s Lupo and Polo GTi models and Fiat’s post-2000 Punto Sporting. If you had to pick a car of this ilk, however, you might well be tempted by Peugeot’s great-looking 206 XSi 1.6. The Peugeot 307 may well pique some interest too, with the 2.0-litre XSi acting as a natural competitor to Ford’s Focus 2.0-litre Zetec. The current range of Fiesta models also
offers Zetec “warm hatch” potential and the lower reaches of MG’s ZR range is also a happy hunting ground. A more recent development has been the
rise of the diesel “warm hatch”, examples of which include the MG ZR TD, the Skoda Fabia vRS, the Vauxhall Gorsa DTi SXi and the SEAT Ibiza TDI130. Offering excellent fuel consumption and fun behind the wheel, they attract a lot of smart money.
What To Look For One of the other advantages of going the
“warm hatch” GTi route is that the cars in question are less likely to have been thrashed by would-be boy racers, although that is not always the case. I t
is.still important then to keep a close
look out for botched accident repairs and the normal signs of driving abuse, usually evi denced by worn front tyres, coarse-sounding engines and shot shock absorbers. If in doubt, get an independent check carried out on the car you are looking at.
