French Connection’s plaque goes to France

A PLAQUE presented to Clitheroe’s French Connection in honour of the group’s 30th anniversary was flown hun dreds of miles to Clitheroe’s twin town of Rivesaltes. The plaque travelled with a

o f

party of 48 people from Clitheroe, who visited Rivesaltes for a jam-packed weekend of entertainment and social engagements. The weekend culminated in

an annual game of football between the French and British, which unfortunately.

on this occasion, saw Clitheroe come second. Presented to one of the trip’s

organisers Dave Johnson prior to the trip by the then Mayor of Clitheroe, Coun. Allan Knox, the plaque was later pre sented to the Mayor of Rivesaltes in recognition of 30 years of the French Connection and Clitheroe’s twinning with Rivesaltes. Our picture shows Coun.

Knox presenting the plaque to Mr Johnson, of the French Connection group. (T010407/5)

M e e tin g on farming’s future

THE future of farming and the countryside will be under dis cussion in Clitheroe next week. MP Mr Nigel Evans is chair

ing a special meeting, which will feature guest speakers Thomas Binns, chairman of the NFU Livestock Board, and Chris Dee, Booths’ Buying Director. Among the questions the

meeting will address are whether the countryside is

under threat from pressures that farmers and landowners will be unable to resist, whether the demand for cheaper home- gro\vn food mil bring irrepara ble changes to the landscape and whether the Valley is in danger of losing its rural charm. The meeting will take place

from 7-30 p.m. in the Ribble Valley Council Chamber on Friday, May 18th.

Stewart’s chocolate prize

THERE was a pleasant “end- of-season” feeling to the latest meeting of Ribblesdale Camera Club, when Accrington’s Harry Emmett presented a photo quiz. It was a light-hearted evening

when a series of domestic objects, all photographed on Harry’s dining room table, were presented as negatives, upside down, sideways or even the right way up. Members had to identify

them and the answers were given as a series of colour slides, all the right way up! Out of the 30-odd images,

Stewart Clark only failed to identify two, leaving most of the club floundering in his wake. Stewart’s prize for this was some chocolate, which, following co option onto the club committee as programme secretary, proba bly made his week complete! The club had a stand at the recent Hobbies Exhibition in

Clitheroe, making it possible to answer questions about its activ ities and dispense advice on pho tographic problems. The stand comprised a small display of pic tures, while a laptop computer projected digital images on a screen and a second laptop was used to demonstrate simple edit ing and improvement of digital images. The exhibition was a great

success, making it possible to explain that to join the club needed neither photographic qualifications nor any particular type of camera. Next week meeting is the

club’s AGM, followed on May 22nd by a viewing of the I CPA black-and-white competition entries. Prospective members will be welcome on the 22nd, or can call secretarj' Ken Geddes on 01200 423474 for a programme of the summer season, which starts on May 29th.
