YOUNG choristers at a Clitheroe school are a step closer to stardom after entering BBC’s “Any Dream Will Do” competition. Pupils in St Michael and St John’s RC Pri

mary School choir (pictured) have been giv ing up their lunch-times and breaks to pro duce a 60-second clip to compete for a chance to perform live on the final show of the popu lar contest. And the help of the Clitheroe Advertiser

.and Times’ readers is sought to help them reach the finals. This year, the BBC has launched a nation

wide talent search to find a male lead for “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. ■ Thousands of hopefuls have auditioned up

and down the country and the judges now have the arduous task of whittling down the best in a series of call backs, followed by Josepli School and a final live performance to find a new Joseph. To run alongside the television programme,

the BBC is running an on-line competition for school choirs. The winning choir will perform live on BBC One during the final show of ‘Any Dream Will Do” and will be invited to appear in the West End for a special Children in Need production of the musical. During the past two weeks, youngsters at St Michael and St John’s school have learnt the

A night full of Eastern promise...

A NIGHT of Eastern Promise is on the menu at a Clitheroe restaurant, complete with e.xotic belly dancers! The Bengal Tandoori, a

Bangladeshi restaurant in Whalley Road, is staging the special event on Thursday, May 24th, to raise funds for the Clitheroe Castle Heritage Appeal. Owner Raj Khan has draft ed in members of the Tarkheena Dancers to give the evening some extra spice. J'hey are a locally-based fitness and dance group running classes at various venues, including Clitheroe’s Roefield Leisure Centre. Mr Khan, who has lived in

Clitheroe for more than 15 years and took over running the popular restaurant 12 months ago, said he was keen to support the Castle Her itage Appeal to put something back into the town. Tickets cost £15 and can be booked by ringing the

song “Entr'acte” as set by the BBC. A spokesman for the school said: “As we

didn’t return after the Easter holidays until April 23rd, we were already a week behind most other schools. “The children have worked very hard

together with our parish organist, Mark Jezierski, and parent Mr Christopher Clews, who agreed to do the filming. “The children are very excited to have entered the competition and this is where we

next round for judging by musical composer and producer Andrew Lloyd. There is only one week left to vote and we need as much support as possible. You can vote for our school by typing

www.josephchoirsearch.co.uk and by follow ing the links from tomorrow onwards.”

Democracy is decided by the toss of a coin!

THE toss of a coin decided who would be the eighth councillor to gain a seat on Chatburn Parish Council following a tie between two candidates. In this year’s parish council elec

tions on Thursday, returning offi cer Mr David Morris was forced to flip a coin after sitting councillor Edward Marcella and prospective candidate Stephen Booth both gained exactly 171 votes each. They were fighting for the final

place on the parish council after nine candidates put themselves forward for election for the eight seats available. Mr Morris, chief executive of Ribble Valley Borough Council,

said: “I can’t remember this hap pening in all the time I ’ve been here and I ’ve been here more than 20 years.” He added: “After they polled the

exact same number of votes, it was recounted twice, but they still had exactly 171 votes each. “I was aware that the procedure

then was to cast lots, which would either mean pulling names or bal lot papers out of a hat or tossing a

coin. “We decided the easiest way was

to toss a coin and did it at the back of the council chamber.” It proved to be a lucky 50 pence

piece for Mr Booth, of Darkwood Crescent, Chatburn, who got

heads and that important extra

vote. Speaking to the Clitheroe Adver

tiser and Times this week about the drama, Mr Booth, who has never stood for election before, said he was surprised by the result con sidering th a t his opponent Mr Marcella had served on the council for around 25 years. • An assembly operator for 3M

Healthcare in Clitheroe, he added: “I would like to try to make it a better place and I ’ll do my best for the next four years.” 0 FOR election results, news

the most action-packed and colourful days in the town’s calen dar for many years. Organisers are expecting a huge turnout and have arranged free park and ride from Barrow Printworks and the gram mar school’s Chatburn Road site, Clitheroe. It is hoped that traders

will support the festival on the Sunday when there will be a spe cial market and repeat of many of Saturday’s main events, plus a full military camp in the grounds of the Castle with a medieval battle. Meanwhile, the Victorians will be returning to town, with a “Meet the Victorians” event at the muse um and around the park’s grounds. Clitheroe Town Band will be per forming on the bandstand. Traders in the Swan Courtyard are plan ning their own attractions, with special ice cream cones, a Bowland Outdoor Reared Pork barbecue, a mini-market courtesy of Taste deli, with organic wines to try and a chance to win a special picnic hamper. With guided countryside tours

on a vintage Bedford bus, a drum ming group, railway memorabilia at the Platform Gallery there promises to be something for all the family.

0 Organisers of the Festival Weekend are appealing for volun teer marshals to help on either the Saturday or Sunday. If you would like to get involved, please contact Richard Jackson at Clitheroe the Future on 01200 421049.
