Blues to take form forward
By Adrian Capstick ' t A }
WHO knows what Clitheroe can achieve next season? But with a positive vibe all
around Shawbridge, after the meteoric transformation the team over the course of four months under Pete Smith and Neil Reynolds, Reynolds has high hopes of maintaining the side’s cur rent form, and earning a top six slot in whichever UniBond League division the Blues find themselves in after the restructuring next week.
VT'- The Blues finished the season IGth, having hovered above the bot tom three when the pair took over. And Reynolds feels the improve
ments can continue next term: “We’ve targeted four or five new faces to link up with the 18 or 19 players we’ve got now. At the moment we’re a top-six side, so with those four or five who knows where next season will take us!” A decision has been taken that the
UniBond League First Division will no longer be just one division but two, to bring the Northern League in line with its southern counterparts in providing two feeder leagues to a
V.' Premier Division. Full details of how this will be car
ried out have yet to be formalised, but the premise is there will initially be two leagues of 18 teams at Clitheroe’s level next season, with a possible North/Midlands divide - the cut off line mark being the centre of Manchester. However, it could still be split
East/West, and the Blues won’t find out who their opponents are until the final make up of the new divisions is announced after the FA League Committee meets on Monday. But Smith and Reynolds’ men fear
no-one after the hard work they’ve put in: “When we were offered the job in December, it was quite a daunting task, we battled through Christmas and we knew we would get through. “A target of 45 points was set by
the chairman, and at that time we couldn’t see where that first win was going to come from as we went five games without success. “It really took off from the 3-1 win
against Woodley Sports. John and Paul Osbourne, Ryan Fisher, Chris Ward and Russ McKenna had appeared on the scene, things began to gel and Clitheroe became a really good place to be. “We brought players in who want-
Kris MaUhcws
ed to play, worked hard and wanted to enjoy their football. The last cou ple of weeks in the season it’s been good to watch, extremely good on the eye and that’s what we’ve wanted from the start. “We haven’t gone into games neg
atively, we’ve been out to win every time and attack the ball, we won’t settle for a 0-0 draw. I t’s put a smile on some of the lads’ faces, got them enjoying their football again. It comes down to a keen work ethic and a great bunch of lads to work with.” However, central defender Kris
Matthews, perhaps the player who made the biggest impression on the side with his return from injury, won’t be returning and his presence will be missed. “Losing Kris is a blow,” said
Reynolds. “He’s been a great player and his attitude the last five or six games travelling from Derby up to three times a week for games and training has been fantastic. He did n’t ask for a penny more and deserves to do well wherever he goes. If we could set him up with a club down there then we would.” But another player who made
equally as big an impression a t his side is staying firmly put in his new found role of responsibility. Reynolds added: “Gregg (Ander
son) stepped up and asked us. We got a phone call volunteering himself for the vice captaincy. Pete and I chat ted about it and took up his offer, and that will stay in place next sea son. “At the age of 21 I ’m delighted
that he thinks so much about the club. He doesn’t live in Clitheroe and has to do a lot of travelling to get to games from Harrogate where he lives. I’m sure he will become a great captain one day. “But Simon (Garner) has done a

fantastic job as captain on and off the field, as he’s been at every game whether playing or not. He’s been at our sides the last few weeks due to a knee injury. We want him to be part of it and we value his opinion from the bench.” And links with Accrington Stanley continue to flourish after last week’s end-of-season game. The Blues management took many
positives from the 4-2 defeat, giving run outs to players who have been unable to play as well as trialists.“It was a really pleasing performance,” said Reynolds. “We were a little stand-offish but we had a chat in the dressing room. You’ve got to remem ber to always respect but never fear the opposition.” Former Kendal Town player
Jonathan Forbes, who played at right back, is one of the players expected to link up with the side in the summer, while the suspended Will Exton and unregistered David Dempsey had.a good game to finish the season. Reynolds added: “That’s the sec
ond time we’ve played Accrington to finish the season, and we’ll be looking to do that every year now if we can. A massive thanks goes to them as well as a big thank you to our chair man Carl Garner for giving Pete and I a chance, the supporters and the committee.” Clitheroe report back for pre-sea-
son on July 2nd, with the first friend ly planned for July 11th, again at home to Accrington Stanley. But games at Shawbridge continue
this Saturday, first the IFA Support ers Club’s semi-final between Preston North End and Bury takes place in the morning, kick-off 11 a.m., and then in the afternoon, Blackburn Rovers Ladies entertain the USA’s Under 20s national side in a friendly, kick-off 3 p.m.
