a rock for the past decade or so, you will probably know that sequential manual gearboxes are now getting rather good. There have been some that make keen drivers ponder the wisdom of buying a conventional manual gearbox, Audi’s DSG being a t the head of that particular field. BMW’s SMG has come a long


way and Ferrari’s FI gearbox is a whole lot better than the first clutch- immolating clunker that appeared in the F355. To that list we can now add Honda’s i-SHIFT, priced on a Civic from £14,715. Available on all petrol-engined


models in the Civic line-up, this is Honda’s first crack at a sequential manual gearbox. When e.xecuted well, these systems offer the plus

points of both a normal manual and an automatic. In an ideal world, you would get the driver involvement, performance and fuel economy of a manual gearbox coupled with the convenience, rapid shifts and


. smoothness of an automatic unit. Unlike an automatic gearbox which features a power-sapping torque con­ verter, a sequential manual instead uses hydraulic clutches to do the work normally carried out by your left leg. The Honda system utilises paddles


behind the steering wheel rather than the less satisfactory buttons on the wheel face that some manufac­ turers opt for, and switching between manual and automaticmodes is via button next to the gear shifter or via the paddles. When youare in manu­


al mode, the gear is indicated on the visual display next to the speedome­ ter, so it is easy to keep track of what ratio you are in. Software prevents you from being able to “buzz” the box by changing into first gear while zipping along the motorway for instance. Likewise, it will refuse to change


up below 1,000 r.p.ra. It is effectively impossible to stall. Stop the car in fourth gear and the system will auto­ matically shift back to first gear in either automatic or manual modes. The i-SHIFT system also uses dif­


ferent shift maps depending on the driving conditions, so when the Civic is being driven downhill the system will shift down to add a little engine braking. Similarly, it will not shift down in the middle of a corner if there is any chance of upsetting the car’s handling balance. Activate the paddles and you can shift manually

any petrol-engined Civic. Honda is quite upfront about the shift in tar­ get demographics, dubbing the car a “premium sports compact." The Civic’s face is quite unlike any other car on the road, giving the impres­ sion that the car has been moulded rather than designed on a computer. The adventurous styling does not


stop on the outside. The dashboard is designed on two levels, the main instruments housed on the nearer one with a surrounding “tier” that includes auxiliary functions like stereo, heating, ventilation and trip meter. This sophisticated feel to the fascia is backed up with quality materials and interesting textures. All versions are generously speci­


fied, with the top models featuring equipment usually only found on far bigger cars. N the face of things, the Peugeot 207 CC has everything necessary to


attract today’s modern woman (whoever she is). Cute looks, sporting appeal


and a roof that instantly con­ verts a hardtop coupe into an aifresco cabriolet are all ingredi­ ents that ought to attract dis­ cerning female buyers in their droves. Men may like it too of course


- but the sales figures for cars like this suggest that this model will have a particular appeal for the fairer sex. Affordable Cabriolets have


always been this w'ay, with men traditionally preferring the more sporting roadster approach. The problem with most hatchback- based cabriolets is that they have always had an inescapable pram-like quality about them. The stubby proportions, untidy hood mechanisms and inelegant rollover bars made them look about as graceful as an industri­ al dumpster. This car’s predecessor, the


206CC, changed all that and its 207 replacement continues the tradition. Even with the roof up, it has a cheeky coupe appeal and with the hood down, the long rear deck ensures the little Peu­ geot is svelte enough to avoid any pram-like connotations. The recipe for the 207 CC is


otherwise reasonably familiar. Offered at surprisingly reason­ able prices (from £14,795), the 207 CC offers performance and panache in a carefully targeted package.

Behind The Wheel The entry-level petrol unit is

available are going to cost the earth to run, although the diesel stands out courtesy of its 54-3 m.p.g. combined figure. The petrol engines are not


■ exactly fuel hogs either, the nor­ mally-aspirated 120 b.h.p. unit returning an average of 43-4 m.p.g. (or 39.2 if you mate it to the optional automatic gear­ box). Alternatively, the zippy 150 b.h.p. turbo installation manages 39.2 miles per gallon. Likewise, emissions figures are good right across the board, as you would expect from engines that are virtually state of the art. The air conditioning system is


dual zone, offering the front pas­ sengers the opportunity to select their individual ambience and it will detect whether the hood is up or down, adapting airflow accordingly. In-car entertain­ ment options are also very impressive, ranging from a rela­ tively straightforward RDS CD system with or without a Blue­ tooth hands-free kit right up to a very serious JBL hi-fi system. There is even colour satellite navigation available as a factory fit option. Trim levels are limit­ ed to two: Sport and GT. On the road, the French com­


pany has tried to make most of the attributes that have made the 207 GTi such a success•- slick gearchange, supple suspen­ sion, entertaining handling and deft steering - attributable to the 207 CC. Has it succeeded? Arguably,


yes, although in truth the CC wili no doubt appeal to those who put appearances before out­ right ability. Still, like owning a diver’s watch capable of descending to 200 metres, even if you do not actually need it, it is reassuring to know you have the capability. Just in case.


Value For Money There are now numerous fold­


ing hardtop small cars to choose from, but the 207CC is competi­ tively priced.


Could I Live with One? Happily - though as an only


car, I might find it a little small. I t ’s still the most stylish car in its sector, yet also dynamically up there with the best. Most will be happy with that.
