sale and many commentators thought that the flame-sur faced styling and jarring lines just flat didn’t work. Fast for ward three years and it’s hard to think of another executive car that looks better. The Audi AG and the Mercedes E-Class certainly don’t rival the 5 Series in the styling department. Per haps Chris Bangle, the man behind this ‘design language’ was right, but he took his lumps well from a largely con servative press. It turns out we were wrong

to scoff at his penmanship. After a faltering start, 5 Series sales lit the burners and took off, 200G marking a record year with 19,G00 cars sold. There’s been a visual tweak to the range, improvements to the engines and the introduction of a Touring version of the M5 to keep things ticking over. BMW has introduced a

regenerative braking system that uses the engine decelera tion under braking to charge the battery. This means that the alternator has less to do in normal driving conditions which, in turn, means a reduc tion in fuel consumption and emissions of around 7 per cent. All nine engines in the 5 Series range have been revised to offer better power and economy while a revised six-speed auto box has also been introduced. Buyers of 550i, 540i, 530i, 535d and 530d models can opt for the Automatic Sports Trans mission which has wheel- mounted paddles for even sharper changes. The once radical shape of the

5 Series has now matured nice ly into a discreet but smart piece of design. In a bid to keep things fresh, BMW has made a few small changes to the latest car. At the front, the headlights and indicators are now clear glass while the kidney grille sits

but not bulky car. The saloon gets decent space up front with slightly below average rear leg room and a 520-litre boot. Measuring 4.48m in length, the Touring estate features a 535- litre load capacity with the 60/40 split folding rear seats in place and a hefty 1,650 litres with the seats folded down. There’s also a split bootlid with the rear Avindow opening sepa rately for the easy loading of small items. Customers can also opt for a fully-automatic tailgate operation with a press on the key fob opening the hatch and simultaneously retracting the boot load cover. The basic model line up does

n’t look a whole lot different these days but there are subtle improvements right across the range. Power outputs have been teased upwards, examples being the 523i that now makes 190bhp (up 13bhp on its pred ecessor), the 535d which is now good for 286bhp (up 14bhp) and the 525d that’s now pack ing 197bhp (up a hefty 20bhp). Prices start at £26,980 for the 520d SE and head north in the mainstream range to £49,805 for the 550i M Sport Touring. Mainstream isn’t enough for

some customers, however, and they’ll want the M treatment. The M5 saloon is still for sale but it’s now augmented by the 507bhp M5 Touring estate, priced at £67,075. This model can even be specified with the BMW Individual High End Audio system.

flush with the bumper. The air duct in the rear valance has been revised while the side sill gets an additional contour line and horizontal LEDs are used in the rear light cluster. Inside, the door panels and window switches have been redesigned and there’s now eight freely programmable ‘favourites’ but tons on the dashboard so that drivers don’t have to use the infernal iDrive control system quite so much. There’s also an optional Lane Departure warn ing system offered. The 5 Series remains a big

marketing blurb. The reason why is that

despite the aggressive looks and raised seating position, this is not a 4x4 at all. Power is directed to the front

wheels only, making this a vehi cle suitable only for road use. Before we condemn it as a

fraudster, perhaps we should examine this market closer. The Captiva LS sports a 141

b.h.p. 2.4-litre petrol engine that will be overlooked by most buy ers, who will instead tick the box marked 149 b.h.p. diesel engine and pay a good deal more. Maximum power chimes in at

a fairly heady 5,200 r.p.m., with the maximum torque of 220Nm arriving at 4,000 r.p.m., so you will need to rev this engine to get it stoked up. The design is clever in reduc-.

ing the perceived bulk of what is a surprisingly spacious vehicle. Viewed in isolation, the Cap-

tiva looks to be about the size of a Toyota RAV4 or a Suzuki Grand Vitara, but the tale of the tape shows that it is a much heftier piece of metalwork. Even if we play Chevrolet’s

game and compare it to the leading mini-MPV, the Vaux- hall Zafira, we find Luton’s finest breaking the tape at just 4,467mm. That is why the Chevy has

room for three rows of seats - and thus, seven passengers in diesel engined LT guise. The Captiva LS actually

offers very little in terms of functionality over a decent mini-MPV, many of which are now very competitively priced. This Captiva will appeal to

the low- mileage user who wants a vehicle with real presence. As a school run special, it is

brilliant. For anything more demanding, it is easy to find the concept wanting. That is not to say the Captiva is a poor vehi cle per se. With a diesel engine and all

wheel-drive, it becomes a far more attractive proposition.
