2006? The form line was undeni­


able. The Range Rover, Land Rover DiscoveryS and then the Range Rover Sport all proved to be utterly indomitable in their respec­ tive product niches. It would have been an


upset of monumental pro­ portions for Land Rover to suddenly go off the boil with its volume seller, the Free- lander. Merit only goes so far in


this market. Only at the very end of its development phase was the old Freelander in any way class competitive. In truth, it had been over­


taken by most of its Japan­ ese rivals a while back and traded on the strength of its badge for quite some time. The development money poured into the latest model niay not win as many incre­ mental sales as Land Rover might imagine. Many small 4x4s are set


up to ride firmly on road, their manufacturers knowing that they will rarely, if ever, be subjected to off-road use. The Freelander is different


and was engineered with off­ road use very much in mind. A slightly unconventional


blend of soft springs but rel­ atively stiff anti-roll hard­ ware arid surprisingly sharp steering fulfils this task, but makes motorway driving less relaxing than it could be. The flip side of this is that barrelling down a typical B-

hit 60 m.p.h. from rest in 10.5 seconds, so it is not among the quickest of the diesel compact 4x4s, but it always feels keen and puppy­ ish, the 158 b.h.p. four-cylin­ der engine delivering its maximum torque at 2,000 r.p.m., with peak power chiming in at 4,000 np.m., giving a decently wide power band. Al! but the entry level


model get Land Rover's excellent Terrain Response system for off-road driving, which goes a long way towards excusing the Free­ lander for its lack of a proper low-range transfer case. This system acts almost


like an off-road expert sat alongside you, selecting the best traction mode for any given terrain type. No rival has anythinsquite like it. The shape is instantly


familiar, albeit one which looks as if vehicular geneti­ cists have artificially insemi­ nated a Freelander with some purebred Range Rover DNA. The MKl Freelander was


one of those rare exceptions - a vehicle that just got bet­ ter and better looking throughout its lifetime and the second generation car has upped the ante again. While it retains the


chunky good looks. Land Rover has imbued it with a far more premium look and feel, which is just as well because average prices have crept up across the range. Although the shape is recog­ nisable, you get more Free­ lander for your money now. It is 50mm longer, I09mm


wider and 32mm taller, but the wheels have been moved

That is a huge differential between.the top and the bottom, and the reason it is so wide is that all but the most craven badge snobs will likely ignore the stripped-out S entry model, priced at £20,935 to give the Freelander an eye-catching starter price. View the first rung on the


Freelander Td4 ladder as the next model up, the GS, priced at £23,345 and you will appreciate how de-con- tented the S model is. The GS gets the Terrain Response, climate control, front fog lights and 17in. alloys. Step up to the XS and you


will also get a nine-speaker Alpine stereo, electric front seats and parking sensors, plus a different design of alloy wheel. The SE factors in touch­


screen sat nav, heated front seats and an electric sunroof, while the top HSE version includes leather seat facings, a 14-speaker Dolby Pro Logic stereo and ISin. alloys. It is no use ignoring the


fact that the Freelander Td4 is an expensive piece of tack­ le, price tweaking with the S notwithstanding, but sales figures suggest that many see it as a price worth pay­ ing. Dub it a jack of all trades


hut master of none if you like, but this well-rounded blend of abilities is probably right for this sort of market. The old Freelander sold in


multitudes without- ever being a particularly great piece of hardware. The irony about the latest version is that it is a quan­ tum leap forward but just the same people are going to buy it.

The latest Touran looks a


good deal sleeker and better- groomed, even in the base 1.6- iitre S form that we examine here. Many similarly priced rivals


will be better than the Touran 1.6 S to drive. It is a fact. A Vauxhall Zafira 1.6i, a Mazda5 1.8i or a Ford C-MAX 1.6 will all offer a more vivid driving experience. The Touran finds itself in


midfield. It is more entertaining than a Citroen Picasso or a Renault Scenic, but this is emphatically not a vehicle to plump for if you resent having to lug the family about and just want to let off a bit of steam. Performance can best be


described as leisurely, 60 m.p.h. coming and going in 12.7 sec­ onds on the w'ay to 111 m.p.h. The 101 b.h.p. engine itself is


a relatively sweet little unit, but load the car upWith kids, kit and caboodle and it will strug­ gle to drag you up hills. The five-speed gearbox will


see plenty of action, as you are frequently forced to drop a cog or two to tap into some form of

suppressed, although those with any mechanical sympathy may well decide that a bigger engine is a better investment. Ride quality is old-school Germanic firm, but the steering and brakes are both well above par. The mini-MPV market is one


that once valued conservatism, but Volkswagen seemed to explore a position with the Touran where conservatism lapsed into blandness. All that was required to


nudge the vehicle back into the sweet spot of buyer focus were a few well-judged nips and tucks. So it is that the 2007 model


year Touran has a more assertive front end, compli­ ments of a revised radiator grille and headlights which are similar to those of the Eos coupe-cabriolet. With a distinct double curve


to the underside of the lamp unit, it is a welcome diversion from the anonymous blobs fit­ ted to the old Touran. This 1.6 S model does without the big alloy wheels that fill the arches so purposefully on the upspeci- fication models, but the 15in. rims are an inoffensive design. These days there are only two


petrol engines offered in the Touran line-up, which just goes to show the swing towards diesel in vehicles of this type. Given that the 1.6-litre


engine is earmarked only for this entry-level S model, and is included as much to give the Touran an eye-catching starter price as anything else, it is small wonder that most buyers will walk straight past this car and fork out the extra £1,000 for the starter


1.9-litre diesel. You should not read


too much into the quot­ ed fuel economy figures. Yes, the Touran 1.6S will return 34.9 m.p.g. if driven as if you are route finding for a funer­ al cortege, but get the family in and 28 m.p.g. will probably be a more realistic target. Where the Volkswa­


gen really claws back a lot of ground is in resid­ ual value. Three years down the road this vehi­ cle is still going to be worth 46 per cent of its original price.
