Cliiheroe . . .•.....................1 Goole..................... ..............2

IT 'S going to be a gruelling Christmas for Clitheroe this year if this game is anytliing to goby. N o t taking anything away

from the players that turned out, as N e i l Reynolds and Peter Smith's men looked more than capable of taking all three points from Goole. But with players missing

through suspension, injury and holiday already, and with more to follow and greater opposi tion to play, defensive frailties and future shooting options are a concern. There was a huge positive in

the Blues netting their first goal direct from a corner in 65 games, but the gloss of that Ross Bain goal was soon sullied by defensive gaps at the back. N o t even a white Christmas

other three IdcL in on Saturday for the trip to Wakefield and they will all be missed. Goole had the upper hand

for the start of the first half, at first limited to shots from dis tance, until Paul Horridge was called into a reactionary save from Duncan Bray at his back post following a knock on from a free kick. Dean went close at the other end when he challenged

rose to the challenge on 31 min utes when he met an Owen Roberts' in-swinger at the back post to give the Blues the lead. I t was to last but nine min

utes as Bray made the most of space le f t by a three-man Blues' defence to cut inside with a good run and find the back of the net for an equalis er.

Dean very nearly found the

back of the net with a second Clitheroe strike just before the

interval and he was unfortu nate not to get it. Having been put through on

goal and rounded the keeper in a one-on-one s ituat ion, it

appeared as though the local forward had done all the hard work. His simple tap in looked good enough for a goal, only Goole left-back Craig Robin son slid in with a heroic off-the- line clearance to deny Clitheroe a deserved second of the game. The second half saw Goole's

other s trike r Andy P a r ton cause problems for Garner and Roberts with his speed, and he linked up with Bray to test Horridge again. Dean continued to b a ttle

away at the other end, first alongside Gary Bowker and then with a second debut for ward in Karl Loisi. But Goole netted the winner

when a corner was played beyond the back post and headed back into the six-yard box for Liam Chapman to head home. And it simply wasn't to be

Dean's day as the usually on fire striker smashed over from 10 yards a great opportunity to level the game, before Goole substitute Steve Rollinson struck the post in injury time.

before Scott Fielding broke the deadlock, beating the keeper with a neat finish, the ball crawl ing agonisingly over the line.

As expected the Yorkshire side

d id ral ly back on ly to find Grindleton stopper Darren Jack- son in fine form, pulling off some finger tip saves to keep the vil lage side in the game. Despite the conditions it was Grindleton who tried to play the

football and took a slender lead into the changing rooms at half time. Tw o enforced substitutions

due to injury worked in the away side's favour and soon increased their lead when Martin Cowey slotted home a spot kick after cynically being up-ended in the Cowling 18-yard-box. So, with their tai ls up and

bossing the game, Grindleton soon made it three goals to the

good when substitute John Ash lobbed the keeper from 20 yards with a well taken strike. The rout was then completed

when captain and man-of-the- match Darren Barrow tried an audacious right-foot volley from midway inside the Cowling half, which failed to trouble the keeper. However, in tune with the cur

rent season of good will, and gift wrapping the team an early Christmas present, the Cowling keeper hizarrely disposed the ball in to the back o f his own goal. Four goals to the good it

remained and three well earned and deserved points were on the way back over the Lancashire border.

Rimington go down by odd goal

Worslhorne Reserves................ 4 Rimington Reserves................-.3 IT was a nightmare for Rimington as they were edged out in a seven- goal tussle. The villagers started the

brighter and looked as though they were going to ease past an average Worsthorne outfit. However, the centre of attention

definitely was focused on the refer ee and his decisions. Ben Thrclfall started the goals

flowing thanks to Gary Brunskill's strength in the centre of the park as he won the ball to play Threlfall through to calmly slot home. Gary Haslam then sent the

pacey Warren Green down the left to drill home under the keeper. All was going well for Riming

ton apart from missed chances from Thelfall and Matt Gamer. However, the referee decided to entertain the players with some

strange and incorrect decisions. Worsthorne dispatched a penal

t y when Iain Czapowski was alleged to have pulled a shirt in the area and the leveller came from another blatant off-side. The second half saw Rimington

come out with all guns blazing! I t did, however, take 30 minutes

to find the breakthrough with Haslam converting a through ball into the top left-hand corner giv ing the keeper no chance. Rimington continued their dom-

inance and pushed forward at every opportunity. Brunskill went on a good run only to be mauled in the box by

■two defenders. The referee bemused everyone again by this time, not awarding a blatant penalty. The frustration grew further

when Threlfall went through on the right, pulling the ball back to

Garner for the referee to give an off-side decision! Rimington created chance after

chance but still couldn’t kill the game.

Typically, Worsthorne counter attacked and got a leveller once

again which appeared to be off side! Once again, the referee was the

centre of attention, and the Rim ington players could not help but show their disappointment. And the final nail was put in the

coffin when Worsthorne came for ward for the final time to take the lead and the three points. Rimington tried to find another

goal in the final minutes but once again chances went begging from Threlfall, Garner and Haslam. Brunskill also hit the post from

25 yards and picked up the man- of-the-match award for a solid per formance in the centre of midfield.

Dog In n ......................... 4 Ossy Refugees...... ......2 DOG Inn rounded o f f 2006 b y reaching the Terry Cattermole Trophy quarter-finals for the first time in the team's history. The Athertons-spon-

sored Whailey side creat ed a host of f irs t -h a l f chances at Memo ria l Park, but failed to take any of them. However, they went

ahead early in the second half thanks to a fine finish from impressive debutant Nick Fielding. Two goals in three min

utes then saw the Oswaldtwistle

side

equalise following a free- kick, before Liam H i l l tapped home fo l low ing more good work from Fielding. A confident Hill finish

looked to have sealed the win, but a long-range Refugees second put the celebrations on hold. However, the game was

made safe when Fielding > headed home his second following an excellent run i and cross from Darren Fothergill. D o g manager Simon

Kerins was delighted at reaching the last eight for , the first time: He said: "On another i

day, we could have been four or f iv e goals up at i half-time. When you miss so many clear chances, i especially in a cup game, you start to wonder if you are going to live to regret * those misses."

US TO YOU - FESTIVE GREETINGS FROM P3 COMPUTERS ■ f www.clitheroetoday.co.uk Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, December 21 st, 2006 47 Littlemoor men lose out in a tale of two halves

Fyldc Saracens .........25 Clitheroe R V FC ............10 A TALE of two halves was seen from the town's rugby men at Fylde on Saturday. In the first half they only

got out of their own half of the pitch in the last five minutes, and promptly scored a try. But by then, Sarries had

already racked-up 15 points. At least the Maroons

were able to welcome back from injury full back Russ Shiels and lock forward Andy Rigby, as well as including holidaying stu dent Chris Waddington on the bench.

The first 35 minutes were

a bit of a disaster for the visitors as they were forced to defend time and time again. And to be fair, at this point Fylde could have posted a large score, i f Clitheroe had not been made of sterner stuff. When Clitheroe did final

ly break out of their territo ry in the dying minutes of the half, they managed to put some good drmng play together, to force the home side to within 15 metres of their own line. Then as a ball shot out

from a ruck, fly half Jim Moody showed a good turn of pace to shimmy his way

over to open Cltheroe's account. Buoyed by the score,

Clitheroe were a different team in the second half. The forwards began to up

the pace, and although hav ing difficulties at scrum time, the driving play was of top order, where good yardage was gained time and again. When they worked .their

way up to the line, it was back-rower Alan Nuttall who plunged over from close range. Fylde struck back again

to extend the lead, but Clitheroe were imdaunted. The pack plugged away

and the back line pressed when the opportunities arose, centre pairing Martin Lafranceschina and Danny Glover having solid games. Glitheroe could have

bagged another couple of tries, firs tly when they spent an age camped right on the line. A rash of “white line

fever” overcame one or two players, when a simple pass out may have paid better dividends. . Again Glitheroe were

guilty of too many mis takes, a problem that has cost them far too many matches in the first half of this season.

Pendle..................................41 Buccaneers Under 15s . .7 THERE was still room for festive cheer for the Bucca neers in their last fixture before Christmas, despite being beaten by a strong Pendle team. I t was a game of two

halves with the first period going to the dominant Pen dle side. They had great strength at hah back and in their back line and managed to run in five tries, convert ing two. The Clitheroe forwards,

however, controlled the set piece scrums and managed to take two against the head, thanks to hooker Jack

Prince. I t was from one of these turnovers that Clitheroe's Alex Robinson picked up the ball at the base of the scrum and man aged to drive on a number of metres and off-load the ball to the back line. Some great inter-play and

passing saw the ball end up with the crash centre, Sam Thomber, who bulldozed his way over the line between the posts to score the visi tors only try of the match. The conversion was made

good by the Alex Robinson. A stern pep talk at half

time by the coaches resulted in a resurgent Clitheroe team stepping on to the

park for the second hah. But while the -^dsitors did

n’t manage to get over the whitewash, it is a massive testimony to the team that they managed to keep the Pendle tries down to two. The tackling in the second

half was superior as was the team's rucking game. Per haps too much respect was shown in the first haU to the bigger team who could have run riot in the second period had they been allowed. There are a number of

key areas to concentrate on in the New Year. Therefore, not too much Christmas pudding and back to train ing on Sunday, January 7th!
