PARISHIONERS in Whal ley have been saddened to hear of the death of Fr Thomas Murray. The parish priest at English

Martyrs’ R.C. Church in Whalley for 23 years, Fr Mur ray (pictured) died aged 91 after a long period of declining health. Born in Liverpool, Pr Mur

ray was ordained in Rome at the age of 30 in 1954, after teaching in India with the Irish Christian Brothers for 10 years. While in India, he met

Mother Teresa and during his years in Whalley, he wrote a book entitled “The Calcutta of Mother Teresa,” describing the nun’s work among the poor of India long before she became world famous. The book also told of Fr

Murray’s first missionary expe rience in Calcutta in the heart rending days immediately after the Second World War, when the church found itself caught in the middle of the conflict between Hindus and Muslims, who were fighting for their sep arate states. He knew Mother Teresa

when she taught with the Com munity of Loreto Sisters in Calcutta and said her example

inspired him to enter the priest hood.

. - After his ordination, Fr Mur

ray spent eight years at St Bede’s Church, in Manchester, and then left for Nigeria to take up a post as principal of a boys’ school. After eight years in Africa, he returned to England for a short stay at St Peter’s Church, Mill Hill, Blackburn, before becoming parish priest at Whalley. Fr Murray lived at the Presbytery in The Sands, Whalley, until he retired in 1995. A burial service was held on

Friday at Whalley and Wiswell Cemetery and he is survived by his two cousins Mary Connelly and Sister Gertrude, who live outside the area, (s)

Enjoying the country views

MEMBERS of Ribblesdale Camera Club enjoyed viewing the Lancashire and Cheshire’s annual slide folio - good photo graphs and short, sharp com ments from the Chorley club kept the evening moving along. Disappointingly however,

only one slide from Ribbles dale managed to make the top 7.5% of the entry chosen for the folios. This was Ken Ged- des’ “Glescherjet I I ”, a picture of an Austrian cable car, which attracted favourable remarks from the commentator. This is a tough competition,

The Ribblesdale club was more successful in two other recent competitions, winning the Frank Sellers Tro phy for colour slides in the Annual Inter-Club Photo graphic Alliance competition.
