visitors to all the main attractions, includ ing the various vintage farm vehicles, the • lines of perfectly-groomed heavy horses and the cattle marquee where the Valley’s finest specimens were being preened to perfection for their moment of glory in something akin to a bovine beauty par lour. There were sheep of all shapes and sizes, food for all tastes and trade stands to tempt the pockets. One of the many highlights was the
competition tent where the quality of the varied and numerous exhibits was quite simply outstanding. Among them were eye-catching eata
bles. Royalty was there in various disguis es - as decorated eggs, in drawings and shell collages, all to mark the monarch’s 80th birthday and celebrate her visit to the heart of the Valley earlier this year.
Two women had taken on the task of dec orating cakes fit for a Queen and the Val ley’s males also made their mark showing off their cookery skills with 10 entries in the men-only baking class. In the adjoining craft tent there were
cards, candles, jewellery and soaps, as well as hand-spun, hand-knit bags, and a pho tographic archive featuring families from the Slaidburn area which proved a popu lar draw. Outside a mini “Cresta Run” featuring
plastic sledges hurtling at speed down a metal hill was a definite hit with the youngsters, as was the eye-catching climbing wall and the inflatable slide and indoor bouncy castle. Arena entertainment including a stun
ning show by the Gwynedd Axemen, who showed-off their unusual carpentry skills with treestumps and chainsaws, and members of the Bulldog Display Team, who somersaulted their way through an acrobatic display of gymnastics. Throughout the day music from Slaid burn Silver Band could be heard across the showground. There was a good turn-out in the heavj^
horses section adding to the show’s feel of a traditional country fair. John Wilkinson, of Foxfields, Stony-
hurst, picked up the reserve champion title winning his class for the best yearling filly with one-year-old Hainton Charlie’s Girl. Mr Wilkinson has had a very suc
cessful year picking up the best filly award at the Royal Lancashire Show and named champion at Chipping and Kilnsey Show. After lunch cattle farmers breathed a
momentary sigh of relief, taking time out to reflect on their successes of the day. Supreme dairy champion was Claremont Jordan Mimi belonging to Martin Bristol, of Newton, marking the farmer’s first first place since the onset of foot and mouth. All creatures, great and small, were on
view, with one of the smallest being 17- week-old labrador puppy, Tilly, who caught the eye of show president Bill Townson in the pets class and earning three-year-old Lizzie Warburton, of Waddington, £5 in prize money, which she was looking forward to spending on ice cream. Mr Townson, who was brought up in
Newton, said it had been particularly encouraging to see how many young peo ple had submitted entries to the show, praising the Young Farmers’ section adding: “That’s what keeps the Valley alive.” Accompanied by this wife, Joan, Mr
Townson explained that the Hodder Val ley was a “unique show” as it took place at three alternating venues - Newton, Slaidburn and Dunsop Bridge. Another appealing feature of the show
is that there is no entry charge for chil dren, making it a great day out for all the family.
