Introducing the 1 PRESTON - URMSTOM

A HONEYMOON in the Maldives fol lowed the wedding of Miss Emma Urm- ston and Mr Martin Preston at Coniston Hall, Coniston Cold. The bride, a self-employed beauty thera

pist, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs C. W. Urmston, of Horton-in-Craven. The bride groom, a train guard in Manchester, is the son of Mrs B. Preston, of Fence. The cou ple enjoy skiing, horse riding and walking their dogs. Given away by her father, the bride wore

an ivory strapless gown with a train and flower detail in pink, blue and green. She carried a bouquet of cream roses, Asiatic lilies and pink gerbera and wore an Alice band decorated with pale pink gerbera. Dame of honour was the bride’s sister,

Natalie Nicholls, and bridesmaids were her cousin, Kirsty Davies, and friends, Andrea Boden and Emma Burgess. They all wore ivory skirts with ivory lace and rose-pat terned tops and the pink gerbera theme was continued in their wrist corsages and hats. Flower girl was the bride’s niece, Erica Nicholls, who was dressed as a fairy princess. Best man was Rowan Morrisey, the

groomsmen were Michael Coates and Craig Nicholls and the pageboys were the bride’s nephews, Alexander Morgan and William Nicholls. A reception was held a t the Coniston

Hotel and the wedding cake was made by the bride’s aunt, Mrs T. Davies. The cou ple will live in Barrowford. Picture by Dawn and Alan Kent, of

Chatburn.

with its important Roman remains. Travelling away from the village the de Tabley Arms was shown to be a building of historical importance, while the so-called Cromwell Bridge was now thought to be a misnomer. Investigations had shown that some buildings in the area reputed to have been used by historical fig ures had not been built until long after the person had died. The vote of thanks was given by mem

ber Dennis Cgden. The next meeting of the club is on Fri

day at 10-45 a.m. at the Pendle Club, Low- ergate, Clitheroe, when Mr Geoff Scargill will talk on “Edward Elgar - The Real Enigma”.

TWO Billington mums say they are annoyed and confused with new rules banning three wheeled buggies from buses.

e v Miss Denise Wooff (21), had a problem when

entering a bus after the buggy, used by her eight-week-old daughter, Morgan, was deemed “unsuitable” by the driver. The former Ribble Valley resident, who is cur

rently visiting her parents in Billington, board ed the 225 Lancashire United bus from the vil lage to Blackburn, on Sunday afternoon, when she claims the driver stopped her from taking the three-wheeled buggy on to the vehicle. She was eventually allowed on after saying

she had no knowledge of the new rule. However, the next day when she boarded a bus to Clitheroe, she says no mention was made of the buggy. Now her friend, mother-of-three Mrs Laura

Price (23), of Weavers Croft, Billington, says she is worried that she, too, will be refused entry- on to the bus. It is understood that a recent leaflet given to

drivers and passengers by one of the companies which has recently taken over bus services in the Valley, said drivers would not accept unfolded buggies if they felt allocated space at the front of the bus was full. The mums have launched a campaign against

the decision and more than 20 residents have signed a petition condemning the new rules.

They haye also reeeivpH the backirur nf ineal hav received backing o loc

councillor Carl Ross and are now bringing the petition to the attention of Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans. “I cannot understand why the bus company

has decided to introduce these rules,” said Mrs Price. “I have just spent £550 on a new three- wheeled buggy for my 21-month-old son.Lay- ton Singleton, and seven-week-old daughter, Jenna Leigh. I use the buses twice a day to take and collect my son, Reece (four), from Whalley Primary School. What am I supposed to do if they don’t allow me to get on the bus? They cannot expect me to walk. - “It’s confusing and very disgraceful treating

mums with children like this.” Earlier this week, Coun. Ross said; “I think

it is sad that mothers have found themselves in a position in this day and age to be refused entiy along with their children on public trans port without prior notification. “I can understand their disappointment and

annoyance and will do everything in my power to find the reason why they have introduced the new rules.” Lancashire United is one of three new

providers of bus services in and around Black burn, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley. When the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times

contacted the bus company, staff were unable to comment on the matter.

• DOZENS of Whalley -villagers enjoyed suc cess by taking part in a variety of competitions in the run-up to the summer festival. The “Something E^hy” competition, where traders displayed an item in their show window, which they do not normally sell gi-ving customers a chance to spot the unusual item, was won by Mr and Mrs Joseph and Heidi Lord, of Old Back Lane, Wiswell. The couple will be treated to lunch at Food at Breda Murphy’s. A special

runner-up prize of a £5 book token was awarded to four-year-old Archie Proctor, of Mitton Road, Whalley. Despite the damp weather, a number of keen

groups and families set off to explore the nooks and crannies of the village as part of the treasure hunt. Prizes of £10 book tokens were awarded to villager Mrs .Judith Davies, of Queen Street, and the “visitor” category went to Lorraine and Tracey from Kemple View, Clitheroe.
