Bowlers remember their friend

TROPHIES have been handed out in memory of a long-serving and much-loved member of Read Bowling Club. A bowling match was held where

more than 20 members of the club gathered to remember Mrs Doris Birch, who died last Christmas aged 93. Mrs Birch had been a member of

the club for more than 25 years and was well-liked by all.

The memorial match was won

by Mrs Sally Birmingham, with the nmners-up position awarded to Mr John Rostron. Mr Henry Duerden, chairman of

Read Bowling Club, has paid trib ute to a “lovely” woman who took part in all community events. He said: “She was an active

member of the club until her death and was popular with everyone. “Apart from bowling, she

enjoyed playing whist, dominoes and bingo. “We feel pleased to have held

this match and to have remem bered her in this way as she was such a worthy club member.” Our picture shows winners Mrs

Birmingham and Mr Rostron (centre) along with other members of the club. Trophies were donated by Mrs Birch’s son, Fred and his family, (s)

Valley’s tally in best-kept awards

by Duncan Smith

VIBRANT villages across the Rib- ble Valley have harvested a fine crop of awards in this year’s Lancashire Best Kept Village Competition. Once again the delights of the

Valley won over judges in the com petition, sponsored by Lancashire County Developments Ltd - the county council's economic develop ment company. Walker Fold, between Chaigley

and Chipping, was voted Lan cashire’s best-kept hamlet, while York village, above Langho, was the most improved small village or hamlet. Knowle Green Village Hall was

judged the county’s best-kept pub lic hall and St Peter and St Paul’s RC Church, at Ribchester, was run ner-up in the places of worship cate gory. Clitheroe scored two successes,

judged as having the county’s best- kept noticeboard, outside the York shire Bank in Castle Street, and its best-kept public toilets, in Church

• A COMMUNITY stalwart, whose career protecting and developing the interests of young people earned him a knighthood, is to retire. Sir Bill Taylor (55) has spent

33 years organising activities for youngsters and helped them to

Walk, close to the Ribble Valley Council offices. Waddington’s Coronation Gar

dens won the “special feature” cate gory, while its war memorial, next to the gardens, was.highly commeded in its class. Nearby West Bradford Coronation Gardens was also high ly commended in the special feature section, while West Bradford as a whole was highly commended in the Champion Village class. I t is reserved for previous winners of the overall Champion Village title, which West Bradford achieved in 2003. Other Ribble Valley successes this

year included Hackings Caravan Park, at Old Langho, being runner- up in its class, a highly commended for Billington in the medium-sized village class, and two more highly commendeds for Waddington - for St Helen’s Church as a place of wor ship and for Waddington Hospital Cottages in the sheltered accommo dation class. Winners of this year’s large, medi

um and small village classes were Freckleton, on the Fylde, Town

enjoy their spare time in a con structive manner. He will leave his post as the

district manager for the Lan cashire Youth and Community Service next month. And the former leader of Blackburn-with-Darwen Coun

Green, in West Lancashire, and Roughlee, in Pendle, respectively. All the winners will be presented

with their awards in a ceremony at West Bradford Village Hall on Sat urday, October 21st. County Coun. Niki Penney,

chairman of Lancashire County Developments Ltd, said: “Each year the judges find it a very enjoy able yet quite challenging time choosing the winners. With so many beautiful and picturesque villages across Lancashire, it always proves to be a strong competition. “We’ve heard many stories about

villages working together to bright en up their communities and ensure that their local area looks its best.” Looking to next year, there is still

room for Ribble Valley to improve its awards tally. This year it did not feature among the winners in sever al classes, including best kept village pub, inn or restaurant: public play ing field; shop or filling station; industrial or commercial premises; cricket field and surrounds; hotel or guest house; or best-kept farm.

cil, who was knighted by Prince Charles three years ago, admits the time he has spent in the Rib ble Valley has been the most “wonderful, creative and success ful” time of his career. O See next week’s Clitheroe Advertiser for full story.
