A LASTING memorial to a popular Clitheroe police man who died during a holiday in Switzerland last year has been created. An annual golfing tourna
ment will be held to honour th e memory of Sgt John Lucas. Father-of-one Sgt Lucas
(40) died after being swept away by a snowslide during a mountaineering holiday in the Alps last summer. He was accompanied by
close friend, Sgt Chris Bay- butt (46), from Chorley, who also died in the accident. The experienced moun
taineers had travelled to the popular resort of Zermatt in south Switzerland on July 5th. Friends and colleagues a t Clitheroe police, where Sgt Lucas had worked since Sep tember 2003, are keeping his memory alive by holding an 18-hole golf tournament at Whailey Golf Club later this year. The special one-day competition will see officers from Clitheroe police teeing off ,to win the John Lucas Memorial Trophy and have
. their name inscribed on the memorial plaque. ■ The inaugural tournament
HALF-TERM play- schemes at Clitheroe’s Roe- field Leisure Centre meant the youngsters attending were anything but bored. The full week of activi
ties went extremely well, including guest football coaches from Blackburn Rovers FC and a crime- busting talk by the police. The young people loved dressing up in police uni form and exploring the riot
van, and special thanks go to Roefield’s neighbours for putting up with the siren going off each time the children tried their hand at being police officers! Leisure centre manager
Tony Rodia thanked the police and football coaches for their input, and every one else who helped to make the playschemes so successful and enjoyable. “The fun time swimming
sessions always create great cheer and we would like to thank Ribblesdale pool for their help throughout the week. The children created masterpieces in the arts and crafts competition, and the winners, Connor and Isaac Banki-Williams, each won a £5 voucher kindly donated by McDonalds.” Our p ictu re shows

golf, PC Korol said: “As well as climbing mountains, John was a Whailey Golf Club member and enjoyed it very much. In fact, he was bitten by the golf bug! “We wanted to honour his
memory by arranging some thing th a t reflected his hobby and also something that is a continuous memori al rather than just a plaque. “We were all shocked and deeply saddened by his

Alan ‘walks’ in Lady’s footsteps
THE journeys th a t Lady Anne Clifford, Countess of Pembroke, undertook while visiting her castles, were described by Mr Alan Plowright, himself a long-distance walker, at Clitheroe Naturalists’ lecture. Lady Anne was born in 1590, the daugh
ter of George, the third Earl of Cumber land. She lived until 1676, a great age in those times. Being a woman, she had a long struggle
to inherit the Clifford estates following the deaths of her father, brother and uncle, but encouraged by her mother. Lady Margaret Russell, and with her own determination, she returned to the North in 1649 to claim the lands and castles of her family. As a result of the civil war all were in a
ruinous state and she restored five castles including Skipton Castle, built almshous es at Appleby and the beautiful hospital at Beamsley near Bolton Abbey. Her journeys followed the River Wharfe,
passing through Burnsall where the old grammar school, built in 1602 by Sir- William Craven (one-time Mayor of Lon- ^ don), is still in use as a primary school. An entourage of 300 servants accompanied her together \Hth furniture and bedding. The limestone dry valley of Conistone
Dip, beyond Grassington, led to Kilnsey Old Hall, once a nionastic grange belong ing to Fountains Abbey, on Mastiles Lane, the ancient drove road from Malham. Beyond Hardraw Force “Lady Anne’s
Highway” climbed the steep Cotter End to the wild scenery of Garsdale and to the Hell Gill Waterfall, the source of the river Eden. This well-respected lady died a t her favourite castle. Brougham, near Penrith, . in the room where her father was born. The lecture ended with chairman Muriel Car- ruthers thanking Mr Plowright on behalf

exactly how the vastly expe rienced mountaineers came to their death, Preston coro ner Dr James Adeley, said it was likely that they had been caught in an avalanche. He recorded a verdict of acciden tal death. Our p ic tu re shows
