Man dies in A59head-on

A GISBURN man was killed in a head-on collision on the A59 a t Sawley Brow on Tuesday. ■ As the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times went to press, police had not named the 62-year-61d driver of a Nissan Micra, who suffered multi ple injuries and was pronounced dead a t the scene after the collision mth a Land-Rover Discovery. . The driver of the Land-Rover
was a 68-year-old man from the Burtonwood area of Cheshire. He and his 70-year-old passenger were treated for minor injuries a t Burn ley General Hospital.

HUNDREDS of people throughout the Ribble Valley were left stunned this week following the death of popular teenager Luke Makinson. The 16-year-old St Augustine’s RC
High School pupil died in the.early hours of Sunday morning when the , vehicle he was driving collided with a , section of the Downham Road bridge over the A59 at Chatbum. . .

' left floral tributes. A box has been left by his parents for cards from friends. An extremely sociable teenager, Luke
was always with people and had a large group of friends and a loving family. He attended St Michael and St John’s
RC Primary School, Clitheroe, where he joined Clitheroe Dolphins and excelled as a swimmer. Much of his spare’time was spent on
his mountain bike and he particularly, enjoyed cycling through Gisburn Forest and over Waddington Fell.
He was not shy, and this w ^ reflect
ed when he built Ids own mountain bicy cle with a bright pink frame and cow- print seat. His love of bikes developed more'recently into motorbikes and he was looking forward tO applying for his moped licence. A core member pf T r in i ty Youth
Club, Clitheroe, he made friends easily and developed a widespread rapport ■with yoiing people from other schools. On Tuesday, night, they held a meeting in his honour in a bid to, come to terms with his sudden death. Luke had a part-time job at Wadding-
tori Sdcial Club where he had estab lished an excellent relationship with staff and customers. He was looking forward to finishing
school this year and planned to spend the summer in Toulouse, France, where he was to work for a builder.

in the centre lane, which can be used for overtaking by vehicles travelling in either direction. There were a number of other vehicles on that stretch of the A59 and police particularly want to hear from the driver of an a r t ic u la te d lo r ry thought to have been travelling in front of the Land-Rover immedi ately prior to the accident. Anyone who witnessed the crash

hours while police accident investi gation teams worked at the scene, with diversions put in place.
