THE Medical Officer for Health, Dr W. E. Barker, disapproved of the practice of sending children to school under the age of five, claiming that their mothers, although able to earn more money for the family with the time they gained, had no time to prepare proper meals and children often dined on fish and chips “or some equally extravagant and unsuitable diet ”. • A Chatburn correspondent reported

sighting a starling emerging from a hedgerow with an object in its mouth too heavy for it to carry. On closer inspection, after the bird had dropped its quarry and flown away, it transpired that it had been carrying another starling, its neck eaten away and warm, freshly killed. The corre spondent wondered if the bird had been destroyed by a member of its own species and whether any other local naturalists had seen a similar event. ® Confectioner Charles M. Sutcliffe had

I was surprised to hear that fast-food

giant McDonalds is to close 25 of its branches across the country to improve profits at its UK operations. : I love eating McDonalds food and every

time I drive past a restaurant or visit one, I always notice that it is packed not only with children but adults as well, who all seem to enjoy tucking into burgers and fries. More and more people nowadays are

health-conscious and tend to read up on wliat to eat and what not to eat. Yet, you will find during weekends, evenings and half-term holidays, McDonalds restau rants are packed full of people. Critics have always accused McDonalds

of contributing towards the rising levels of obesity and other health problems. In a bid to address this, the company, which has about 1,250 restaurants in the

UK, introduced health foods such as salad and fruit to its menu. In addition, nutritional facts began

appearing on the packaging of its burgers and fries. Although it is believed that McDonalds

has been reaping the benefits of the new, healthier menu, I feel a lot of people think the food served there is unhealthy and fat tening.' Yet what annoys me is that they continue to eat there! ■ My friend’s six-year-old daughter is

overweight simply because her parents have spoilt her rotten by feeding her sweets, crisps, chocolates and biscuits and other “junk food”.

COUN. J. W. D. Critchley accepted the council’s invitation to be the next Mayor of Clitheroe. If people really believe the food offered ■

People have to appreciate that McDon

alds is doing its best to encourage cus tomers to opt for the healthier options from its menus by spending thousands of pounds on advertising nutritional food. If people want to eat a well-balanced

meal, why 9on’t they buy fresh fruit and vegetables from the supermarket and cook healthy meals. ^

I know people who disapprove of food

from McDonalds and other fast-food out lets, yet these are the places they head to when hungry or returning from a night out and cannot be bothered to cook. I don’t care what people say about

McDonalds food, I can proudly say that I enjoy the food offered and am simpiv “Lovin I t”.

LEMONADE was flowing at Tosside School as 40 pupils, parents and teachers toasted a reprieve from the county coun cil’s economy cuts. The campaign to keep open the 156-year-old school ended in relief, however Bolton-by-Bowland school would be closed. •Ribble Valley householders would

soon have to pay a 20% increase on their rates from April. • There was a'population explosion at

Brungerley Farm, Waddington, when one of farmer John Berry’s ewes gave birth to a lively family of quads. Lamb triplets are very common, but four surviving, healthy lambs are quite a rare sight aind caused something of a stir a t the Waddington farm.
