CASTLE CEMENT has been given the all-clear to resume burning meat and bone meal as a substitute fuel at its Ribblesdale
Works, Clitheroe. The Environment Agency
has formally approved the use of MBM (also known as Agri cultural Waste Derived Fuel) following a six-month trial from April to October, 2005. The agency set a rigorous pro gramme of environmental mon itoring during the trial, and reviewed the results to make sure that using MBM in Castle Cement's kilns did not increase the environmental impact of the cement-making process. BUSINESS pride rested square ly on the shoulders of a Ribble Valley company this week. Rose County Foods, of Saw-
ley, was named the Myerscough College Rural Business of the Year in the prestigious BIBAs (Be Inspired Business Awards) 2006, at a glittering Oscars-style ceremony at The Winter Gar dens, in Blackpool. The company, which'spe-
cialises in the slaughter of cattle and lambs and the de-boning of beef, has proved resilient, despite disasters such as the outbreak of BSE in 1996 and Foot and Mouth Disease in 2001. The fact that the business
remains a key player in its com petitive industry is testimony to the dedication of the entire team at Rose County Foods,
said the awards’ judges. The BIBAs 2006 were organised b y : Business Link Lancashire, -with ■ support from key sponsors the: Learning and Skills Council in • Lancashire and Blackpool. Council. This year’s awards ceremony;
was attended by more than 550 .- representatives from Lancashire businesses alongside key digni-.- ■ taries from across the county. ’ Each of the 11 category xvinners; was presented with a handsome i and exclusively designed trophy; to mark their success.

Agency's acting area manager, said: “We are satisfied that burning MBM will not increase the environmental impact of the site. MBM is already used ■ as a fuel in cement kilns in many European countries. Burning MBM like this makes good use of a waste that would otherwise have to be disposed of, and also provides a sustain able fuel as an alternative to fossil fuels like coal. “The strict conditions we
have imposed on Castle Cement's use of MBM will pro tect both the en'vironment and the health of local people.”
Firm is given go-ahead to burn MBM
.
Mr Gareth Price, general-
manager at the Ribblesdale works, said: “We are veryi pleased with the Environment: Agency decision. Once again we i are able to safely use the energy ^ content of a waste product to help fuel our kiln.
“The MBM is entirely con-,
sumed in the high temperatures; of our cement manufacturing: process in the same manner that coal is currently. There are no emission problems associat-- ed with its use and it helps solve: society’s waste problems by pro viding an effective and safe; recovery of energy.”
; MBM is produced in animal,
rendering plants, which process; at high temperatures the waste i meat and bones from abattoirs, and butchers' shops. It is a dry,! granular substance left at the!
■end of this rendering and is usu-; ally sent to landfill.
i Castle Cement will have to ;
keep to strict environmental: conditions when burning MBM; at Ribblesdale. The Environ-, ment Agency has stated that MBM can only be used in the- one remaining kiln and that; MBM can supply no more than 50% of the heat the kiln needs. Other substitute fuels, such as; chipped tyres and Cemfuel, can; be used to provide the rest o f | . the required heat along with; ordinary fossil fuels.
