Top marks for green fingers!

TWO nature loving pupils have been award ed certificates from a local horticultural soci ety in Sabden Primary School’s annual daf fodil growing competition. Year 4 student Marcus Duff-Fortuna and
nursery pupil George Maher were praised by Mr John Boocock of the Sabden Horticul tural Society for returning flowers which were standing upright and had well-spaced petals, without being too tall. Members of the society visited the school
with all the bulbs and compost back in the autumn and helped the children plant them. The plants were then kept in school over
winter. Once they started flowering, the chil dren looked after them at home before unveiling them in front of the judge last Wednesday. Headteacher Mrs Sandra Dundon said:
“We have been doing the daffodil growing competition in conjunction with the horti cultural society tor as long as I can remem ber and it remains as popular as ever with the children, the great majority of whom always bring them back into school looking
really well cared for.” She added: “I t ’s a fun way of teaching
children about science and nature and 'we alwajrs have a beautiful display of flowers in school throughout the spring when the chil dren bring them in.” The school is planning to plant the flowers
in the grounds so that the children’s plants will flower year after year.
A drunken driver fell out of his car
POLICE watched a 22-year-old man stag ger down the road and get into a parked car at 4-15 in the morning.
Blackburn magistrates heard th a t
Roger Thomas Holden was totally obli'vi- ous to the presence of an officer even when he tapped on the driver’s window. And when the officer reached in and
removed the keys, Holden fell out of the car and needed assistance to stand. Holden, of Rogersfield, Langho, plead
ed guilty to being in charge of a vehicle with excess alcohol. He was disqualified for eight months and fined £500 with £50 costs. He gave a reading of 108 against the legal limit of 35.
Claire Fanning (prosecuting) said Hold
en had started the engine, the lights were switched on and he was trying to get the car in gear when the officer approached. Andrew Church-Taylor (defending) said
Holden was out with friends and accepted he had been drinking in the Cellar Bar on King Street, Blackburn. He said that when Holden left the pub he was simply going to his car to look for
some more money. “He didn’t intend to drive home,” said
Mr Church-Taylor. “He was looking for some ‘sharpnel’ that people keep in the (ai for paying for car parking and the like.” He said Holden works in Burnley and
starts at 5-45 a.m. “If you decide to take his licence away
he will not be able to get there by public transport,” said Mr Church-Taylor.

V-; ' ;j J 1 Hi | Dressed up for sport relief
STAFF and members of Roefield Leisure Centre recently held their Aerobathon 2006 in aid of the Sport Relief Charity. I t is estimated that the day, consisting
of aerobics classes with a “Fame” fancy dress theme, raised more than £500 and money is still coming in. There were seven classes to choose from,
including kick, bums and turns and Salsa fit. Some participants even took part in all
seven. All the staff dressed up as characters
from Fame, resplendent in leotards, span- dex, leg warmers and sweat bands. The money will be used to benefit disad vantaged children and grass roots sports.
C L A .R 1 N S of Beauty Event organiser and assistant manager
of the leisure centre, Sophie Valinakis, said: “I t was brilliant. Some people were joining in on the spur of the moment, oth ers had been preparing for weeks. “The energy was high and the outfits
were outrageous. It was a really great day just as we expected. Thank you to all those that helped make it so successful.” For more information on the sort of activities available at Roefield, call 01200
