fires Blues to win see off Colwyn *
Spalding.................... j Clitheroe....................2
A DEBUT strike from substitute Danny Gorton completed Clitheroe’s sec ond half comeback at Spalding on Saturday - against a team who now look destined for the drop. But it was Paul Stans-
field’s equaliser from the penalty spot that first turned the tide for the Blues, having gone into the break a goal down. Spalding hadn’t netted
ACL
in six games before this fix ture, but the Lincolnshire side took an early 13th- minute lead through Ben Garrick, when a right-wing free kick was nodded back across the goalline for the midfielder to prod home. At this point it looked as
though it was going to be a repeat of last season’s trip to the Tulips’ Sir Halley Stewart Field that ended in a poor 1-0 defeat to a near identical goal. But this time out the
11^-
Blues had far more posses sion, dominated play and saw their rearranged defence - with Simon Gar ner in .at centre back for Ryan Parr - given very lit tle to do as they were com fortable with everything bar the free kick. Clitheroe had several
good opportunities in the first half.
Alan Goar had a couple
of efforts go close, Neil Reynolds fired wide and Scott Priestley put an Owen Roberts’ free kick over the bar. Stansfield had a hob
bling shot that very nearly broke the deadlock before half-time, but the keeper coped with the uneven sur
face and got a hand to the ball to prevent it going over the top of him. After the break Craig
Sargeson had several shots go close. His first zipped inches
wide of the post and his second, from a free kick, had to be tipped over the bar by Spalding keeper Simon Daniels. He was then on the
receiving end of a Roberts cross, only to be denied by the feet of the keeper, as the locals continually banged on the door to no avail. Roberts flashed another
free kick over the bar from 40 yards, but the arrival of Gorton for Darryl Avery finally unlocked, the Blues’ assault on goal. A ball forward over the
top was run onto by Stans field, only the keeper clear ly impeded his run without playing the ball, and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Daniels was lucky to
stay on the pitch, but he couldn’t stop the Clitheroe captain, who made no mis take with his 73rd-minute strike to put the Blues back in the game. Preistley was denied
again by an excellent save from the keeper following a

Garner comer, but Spald ing edged back into their visitors’ half when Garrick let fly a screaming strike that struck the angle of post and bar and had Peter Collinge at full stretch. However, the Blues
saved the best to last. Sargeson fed the ball
inside to Andy Taylor, who in turn spread it out wide for Gorton, who had the Spalding defence on the back foot. The reserve team player,
returning for his first game following a lengthy ban, took the ball into the box.

Collinge was called upon
to deny striker Leon Met- tam towards the end and Gorton could have had another but for Daniels. But nothing less than
victory was expected from this game against the league’s strugglers who, thanks to Stansfield and Gorton, were ripe for the picking.

Cliiheroe.....................1 Colwyn B a y ................ 0 A CRAIG Sargeson strike saw another second-half transformation from Clitheroe as they made it back-to-back league wins with victory over play-off challengers Colwyn Bay on Tuesday night. In two seasons the Blues
had never won a game against their Welsh visi tors, with the scoreline in three out of four of those fixtures finishing 0-0. But after coming back
from a goal down to record their first weekend away victory this season against Spalding on Saturday, manager Mark Smitheringale’s Lions did it again at Shawbridge thanks again to Danny Gorton and two other key substitutions. No disrespect to Andy
Taylor and new signing Chris Coupe, but before they made way for Sunley and Gorton, Clitheroe had yet to come into their own. The first half saw the
Blues struggle to string passes together as Colwyn closed down and retained the majority of posses sion. The Welsh side’s smooth
operation did not bring many opportunities on goal though as Clitheroe’s defence, including the returning Ryan Parr, held them at bay. Their only chances on
target, in either half, came from two rasping Ryan Baker free kicks. The first was heading for the bot tom left hand corner but for the intervention of Peter Collinge, and the second after the break

produced an equally great and just four minutes later stop after the Welsh winger’s effort dipped over the wall and was heading for the same destination. Clitheroe had half
chances in the opening 45 minutes, the best being a Sargeson lob that was tipped over the bar, and their best opportunity before the goal came to Coupe on 68 minutes, but his close range shot was wide of the mark. However the introduc
tion of Gorton and Darryl Avery gave impetus to Clitheroe’s forward play.

THREE Ribble Valley girls at a Black burn school have proven unbeatable for their Under 12 netball team this term. The girls, all pupils at Queen Elizabeth’s
Grammar School, have completed their season by winning all 25 of the matches they have played, as well as carrying off the Blackburn with Darwen Schools’ Under 12s netball cup and league double. In those games the team has amassed no
fewer than 675 goals, a quite remarkable tally. Captain and goal attack Emily White-
side, from Clajrton-le-Dale, has accounted for over half of the goals scored by the team this season. The two other local girls are Eleanora
Taylor, from Balderstone, and Helen Duckworth from Wilpshire.
The QEGS line-up is completed by
Amber Pilling, Verity Jones, Georgina Chatburn-Jones, Georgina Turner and Abigail Bamford. Their teacher and coach, Emma Kay,
said the girls had been determined to keep their unbeaten record throughout the sea son: “They have played really well all sea son and I’m so proud of them. “They have also played their netball in
the right spirit all season, and I ’m sure their goals total must be some kind of a record.” Captain Emily Whiteside, on the

Betty drives in at Whalley GC
WHALLEY Golf Club lady captain Betty Ros tron drove into office last Thursday. Following an enjoyable
brunch in the clubhouse, the lady members gath ered on the first tee to watch her drive. From an idea originat
ing in Spain, Betty’s hus band John arranged a sponsored drive-in for the lady captain’s nominated
charity for the year, which is the British Heart Foun dation- with members guessing how far her ball would travel. The sum of £78 was
raised for the charity, and Julia Duffy won a bottle of champagne for the nearest guess to the actual length of the drive. To conclude a most
enjoyable day, the lady captain, lady captain-elect
Vivien Birtwell, and last year’s lady captain Jean Dearden, won the drive-in team competition, with second place taken by Daphne Dawson, Shirley Palich and Carol Blackad- der. In the presentation
speech, the lady captain thanked all the members who had braved the poor weather conditions and who had given so generous
ly to her charity. The new men’s captain
Roy Broomhead, did no fare as well - his drive-in scheduled for Saturday last, was postponed due t< the artrocious weather, a was the annual Clarets ■

take place on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
