A PLEA for less haste was the subject of a winning speech when Clitheroe Speakers’ Club met. The meeting, held at Clitheroe
l i . \ % : / Tall tales and winners
Young Farmers Club, saw four mem bers competing for the honour of rep resenting the club in the area contest later this year. Judged by three members from
other clubs in the area, the winner was Stephen Clarke, whose title was: “Can't We Just Slow Down”, a plea for less haste in the modern life. Runner-up was Dorothy Gertson,
who waxed lyrical about the proces sion of the four seasons and the varied weather and glorious colours to be enjoyed. While the judges deliberated, Ron
Loebell described some of the places he has visited in his w’orking life, and

then club president Robert Morpeth described his plans to emigrate to Australia in June. Meanwhile, six members were chal
lenged during a Tall Stories evening. The competitors, who each presented short stories, were voted on by the audience as to whether they were true or false accounts. Mark Carlton, who was the winner
of the event, managed to successfully delude more listeners than any of his fellow speakers and was awarded the trophy by chairman Dennis Ogden. • Clitheroe Speakers’ Club meets on
the first and third Mondays of the month at 7-30 p.m. in the Young Farmers’ Club, Clitheroe Auction Market. Inquiries: 01200 427870. Pictured is winner Stephen Clarke and runner-up Dorothy Gertson. (s)

ELECTRONIC voting ivas used by the Ribblesdale Camera Club to judge the last of the ivinter competitions. It was in two sections, for digital
projections and colour slides, and members were delighted to welcome Mr Tony Cann, the developer of the voting equipment, to demonstrate its capabilities. The format was that each entry
was shown with time for the mem bers to assess its photographic quali ties and its aptness to the theme of the competition, which was motion. The purpose of the exercise was edu cational and each member was allowed to consider the 28 images in the light of their own judgement and the comments of expert commenta tor and club member Steve Ashcroft. Pressing a button on their handset
gave each member the chance to award marks from five to 10 and thus express their opinion anonymously. When the total scores were superim posed on the pictures on a third view ing, people could compare their con clusions with the spread of marks from the whole club. The results, which will count
towards the Winter Competitions Trophy, were conclusive. In first place was club chairman Jeff Cowl ing, with a superb action shot of a cricketer swinging in mid-air going while trying for a six hit. Unfortu nately, he missed the ball, which was inches away from the middle stump! With 27 members voting, this received 243 marks out of a possible 270. In second place was “Downhill
Skier”, by Mike Bartle, with 236 points, while third was the same

member’s “Canoeist”, with 233. Also scoring tor the series competition were two other images by Jeff Cowl ing and one by Stephen Robinson. There were 21 entries in the slide
section. A similar format was used and surprisingly a tie at the top was recorded, with Steuart Kellington’s “Flamingo Take Off” and Mike Bar-

ties “Fly Fishing”, each receiving 234 points. Even more surprising was a tie for third place, also with the same two members’ “Pelican Flypast” and “Sinking Feeling!” Also in the points were slides by Joan Whittaker and Stephen Robinson. In summary, this was a highly suc cessful evening enabling all of the
club to think about the relative mer its of the images presented and to make a positive judgement con tributing to the final result. There is still plenty of time to join
the club this season. Inquiries can be made on 01200 440868 or 423474. Pictured is Jeff Cowling’s mnning shot, aptly titled “Missed!” (s)
Pamper time to
aid nursery fund A FABULOUS evening - that was the unanimous verdict following a pamper night held in aid of Ribblesdale Nursery. Therapists donated their time, which
had the format of speed dating with par- ticpants moving quickly from one service to another. There werelS-minute session tasters in aromatherapy and Indian head massage, an introduction to colour consul tancy, facials, neck and shoulder massages, henna painting, pedicures and manicures. Food and wine was donated by local
companies, and a total of £450 was raised for the nursery.

Good was his heart, His friendship true, Loved and respected by all he knew. To a beautiful life, Came a sudden end, He died as he lived. Everyone’s friend. His charming ways and smiling face, Are a pleasure to recall. He had a kindly word
