26 Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, April 6th, 2006 It’s Andy’s award

THE caption headed “Sport stars of the future” on page two of last week’s Clitheroe Advertiser and Times incorrectly stated that Jack Dewhurst was pictured receiving an award from Kibble Valley Mayor, Coun. Mary Robinson. The person at the front of the picture was Andy Hutchins, who plays for Ribblesdale Wanderers Cricket Club. We apologise for the error.

Shackleton’s Garden Centre launched a bird feeding campaign for local schools in conjunction with bird care company Tom Chambers. Educational establishments from

across the area taking part received a bird feeding station and starter packs of bird food in a bid to attract new wildlife and bird species to their schools. Pupils at Gisburn Primary School

have recorded an amazing number of callers at the station they set up in their wildlife garden. Parents have had a rota to go into

school to supervise bird-watching ses sions, a hide has been created and binoculars supplied. To supplement the sessions, the

school has also put together a display about birds and borrowed stuffed birds from the Lancashire Library Service to help pupils identify the species they see. Headteacher Mr Andrew Symonds said: “The Friends of School group has agreed to continue the project when the feed runs out. “We really have seen a tremendous change in the number of birds visiting.

I have been amazed at how keen the children have been about the project.” Coordinating teacher Mrs Stephanie

Dugdale said that, so far, the bird high lights have included goldfinches and bullfinches, adding that others spotted included siskins and chaffinches, great tits, blue tits and blackbirds, but no starlings. Such has been the popularity of the food that the school has already had to re-stock and now they are hop ing to reap the benefits. Said Mrs Dugdale: “We now hope

the birds will be nesting in the area and we will continue feeding them all year round.” At Simonstone Primary School the

feeding station has not yet attracted the same kind of interest from avian species. Mrs Catherine Whitham said staff and pupils were unsure whether it was the location of the station or the builders that was putting them off. But pupils have not been put off.

Instead, Year Six youngsters have turned their hands to making bird boxes and designing posters, while chil dren in Years One and Two continue to observe and record the birds do call at the feed station. Our photograph shows young bird

watchers, Abie Lund, Vickie Peel, Wes ley Thompson and Steven Dewhurst, from Gisburn Primary School. (B310306/2a)
